What website on the internet do you think is the most attractive and/or has the best layout for easy navigation?

I've kept this a secret for a while but I've currently got plans on re-doing a lot of the site (I've kept this a secret for a while and will reveal more info in a later thread). Not only do I want to make Vizzed more attractive but I also want to make it easier to navigate, mobile friend and SEO friendly. Letting me know of sites that you guys think have a great design will help me come up with my own ideas.

Not sure how I feel about this... I used to think that Vizzed was difficult to navigate back when I was a newbie but now I really like the layout and design of the site. I hope the changes aren't too drastic...

I can't really think of websites that I like off the top of my head, but I can think of one that I really dislike. I don't like websites that are too intricate and fancy, like the Disney website. It's way too overdone. It's like a girl that wears WAY too much makeup.

I may get a lot of criticism for this, but I am going to say Facebook. NOT ALL OF IT! Just the notification part. You have the "Message Center" up at the top, which is 3 clickable links. Facebook has Friend Requests, Private Messages, and Notifications. 

I know you asked for opinions, but I am going to suggest something here, and say that I would like to see a drop down menu for messages and notifications. Also, they would read as unread, and the number would still be there if you had not clicked on them yet. Of course, an option to "Mark as Read" or something like that, without having to manually go to them would be nice, too. 

Reddit's site is exemplary, imo.  Their search function is top notch, and is my favorite among many sites.  One potential flaw is redirection (although it likely wouldn't be a problem here).  On certain subreddits, it's not clear how to get back to Reddit's main page.  You can simply return to the main page by typing in the page, but that's a bit of a hassle.

thing1 : I strongly disagree. I like the current Message Center a lot better than what Facebook has. The drop down menus are extremely annoying in my opinion. I much prefer to have an actual page dedicated to notifications/PMs.

I honestly think the site design is fine as it is. Most of the sites I think look nice just wouldn't look good for Vizzed.

It's the basic simplicity about this site that I like best, and I'd be pretty sad to see things change.

I like this design, its unique and it gives you that retro feeling. Most website are too modern and such.

I like Vizzed exactly how it is. It might be hard to get used to at first, but it becomes easy to navigate eventually. So, I don't want a drastic change. Just a few minor things I have to point out, though...

Some of the pages at Vizzed doesn't have an easy way of accessing them from what I've seen. Like, the bible page. I could only find the URL in a post in Christian Conservatives, and nowhere else. There are also a file uploading page (not picture uploading page) that I didn't know existed until someone sent a URL to me. (maybe I haven't been looking enough)

So, I want easier ways of accessing certain pages. But other than that, I'm 100% fine with Vizzed's layout.

I believe most "veterans" will agree that the current design is perfectly fine, but that's to be expected since they are used to it. The same applies for myself of course, but If I had to suggest a change it would be to reduce the amount of information available at once. What I mean with this isn't anything among the lines of removing information, but simply change the way they are presented in an attempt to make it look less cluttered.

For example the amount of different links available at a single page or section of the Board or the RGR may be daunting to a user who's still trying to get used to the site interface, not because it's unintuitive or overly-complicated but simply due to the sheer amount of available options on the page, which probably looks cluttered. Simplifying and/or grouping together some of the available options may result into the site looking "cleaner" than it currently does, while not having to get rid of any features as a consequence for reaching that goal.

All-in-all, focusing on content presentation while trying not to make drastic design changes is what I believe to be the best way to appease both older and newer members. As long as it's nothing exaggerated like a complete redesign of the site I'm sure most people will be fine with a design change.

Really, the only things that I would like to be changed is the background and replace it with the old one. And yes, making the site more mobile friendly is a good idea

What about Steam can not think of a better designed or has a better layout than that site simple clean and easy to navigate

Reddit. Like Supernerd said, it's really good. One of, if not the, best layout on the internet.

Although I do also agree this site is alright the way it is. Well, a couple of tweaks and changes could make it better, but not a whole over-haul.

A proper search would be nice but not like Reddit, please.

Prefer the phpbb style myself....

The layout you have for that page seems to be more condensed, so that is a plus if users have default video resolution which cuts off the sides of the current site layout (but I think it looks a bit small).

As far as the design though, I like the side panel for navigation.

Apart from that, I'm indifferent to any other website's design (I got used to this one spending most of my time here).

I would honestly have a hard time enjoying myself if we moved to a reddit-style setup. If we were like reddit in the way that we could each create forums, for any reason, then it'd make sense. Short of becoming reddit, though, that style of build is just impractical. Each of the forums needs some kind of spotlight, like our current /boards page provides, and a reddit-like theme couldn't facilitate that.

I'll have some suggestions soon, but I can't find a website with a theme like the one I'm thinking of currently. I'll post here again when I do.

tgags123 : The vizzed navigation is great once you get use to it but the problem is, not all new users are willing to take the time to get use to it and may ultimately just leave.

legacyme3 : I've been trying to make sure the new design is appealing to new users but not too different where the site loses its iconic look. I think I've found a good compromise; see below for more info.

ZeroTails : It's hard to find those pages because vizzed has never really had a real menu. With the new design I'm putting together, vizzed will now have an actual menu and finding those pages will be incredibly easy.

mvhupsel : I agree that on some pages of vizzed, there seems to be no real organization and there's too much information all over the place. I think my new design will have things grouped together better.

Here's the thing, the site's traffic and revenue aren't doing the greatest and keep going down. I'm barely able to make a full time income working on the site anymore so I need to find ways to increase the site's traffic and revenue. My idea's to pull this off include:
-Putting together a design that is appealing to newcomers
-Putting together a navigation system that's easy to use
-Optimizing the CSS and HTML so that the page loads faster
-Better usage of keywords and meta tags to increase search engine rank
-Better placement of ads to increase revenue
-Mobile friendly

A lot of the above things have already been accomplished with the design I'm working on:

Here are some things you ca test out with that design. First of all, press refresh a few times. The page may not refresh instantly but you may not even notice that it reloads because the page is incredibly light weight (compare the refresh time to the site index for example). The HTML is less than half of the size of the original page, the graphics are a lot smaller and the overall code is much cleaner (I've eliminated tables, have made better use of styles and classes, eliminated a lot of unused stuff, etc). Another thing you can test out is the menu. If you scroll the page, you'll notice the menu follows you and if you shrink your browser, you'll notice that it will not overlap the footer. Also try clicking the Announcement links in the left menu to see how this new design will benefit various pages such as the game pages. I've got 50+ hours into that already but it is so much cleaner behind the scenes. With the way I'm setting things up in the code, it'll allow me to create new features and pages on the site 25-50% quicker than before since I no longer will have to worry about the design or HTML since I'll be re-using the same easily reusable template on most of the pages of the site.

You can't really tell by just looking at the page but everything is incredibly dynamic. What I mean is, many of the elements of the page can easily be changed by simply altering variables and these variables can be altered via the database. What this means to you guys is that I'll be able to easily make it so that you guys can design your profiles with easy by changing font, backgrounds, etc (you'll have a lot of control over your profile). To make things more exciting, for those who have a rented forum, they'll have the ability to completely customize the way the inside of their forum looks. Oh, and creating schemes will be incredibly easy and I wont have to worry about compatibility issues with schemes (heck, I may even be able to allow users to create their own at some point).

Anyways, that page is still under construction but if all goes well, this upcoming week I'll be able to start converting the current pages of the site to the new system and I think that process will take about 1-2 weeks.

I have to say, I'm not a big fan of the new look you are planning going off of the "new index". I'd honestly leave after awhile, because that seems like there isn't not enough going on, and some things are there that don't need to be. 
Just a few suggestions. 

1. Put the Donate Button back where it was. With you putting it right there, it seems like you are begging and you are desperate. Now, that may be the case, but it is a HUGE TURN OFF for me. 
2. I like the Information Table. However, I don't like the bit of blank space that there is after the Top Donation data. Just seems like there is too much "white space", if you know what i mean, which leads me to my 3rd point. 
3. The page should stretch to the entire window. That was something that I really liked when I first came to the site... it didn't look empty. It looked like there was a lot going on, but still simple enough to be able to learn in a few minutes. 
4. Something new you could add that I've fantasized with other users in chat about before: A site search box. You can search Facebook, or GameStop.com, or espn.com for a keyword, and it will pop up... I like that, and I would like to see that come to Vizzed. A prime example would be Roblox.com 's search box. You can type something in, and it will let you search their catalog, users, games, groups, and library. I would love to see something like that on Vizzed. It would be so much easier to find Pac-Man on the GBA from the home screen by typing in " Pac man gba" and hitting search instead of going to the RGR, and waiting for it to load, and then typing in Pac-Man, and then finding the right version. 

Honestly... I like the current version a lot better than the "newindex" version you linked; it is a huge turnoff. 

thing1 : I plan to add a few more things to the page which will make it look like there's more going on. See the blank spaces to the very right and left? I plan to utilize that in the future in some pretty cool ways. Although, it's probably not good to have too much going on though, that can be overwhelming for new users.

1. I didn't know where else to place the donate button. I wanted to make the entire message center area a lot smaller since it currently takes up a lot of space. Keep in mind that the donate button is currently in the message center on the current design. I'll see what I can do about fining a better position for it though.

2. The blank space isn't there for all browsers but I have to have the Information column a fixed height for a lot of reasons.

3. Having the page stretch the entire window makes it harder for me to control the flow of information and how the page's design handles it. Stretched width is of the past and it makes the pages look too cluttered but I do plan to keep it for some pages such as posts.

4. With the way I've got my code right now, it'll be somewhat easy to add a search feature in the future.

Ultimately I have to move forward with my design. You may not agree with it but if I don't make some big changes to the site, it'll be hugely downsized within a year. I obviously can't please everyone (I've had countless users tell me how much of an eye sore the current site is) but I can try and do what I think will be best for the site in the long run.
