I have to go with Mario because Mario has been around for 30 years (34 years actually if you include the first Donkey Kong games) and Sonic only has been around for 25 years, means that Mario is 5 years (if you count the Super Mario series that started in 1985) or 9 years (since Mario's debut in 1981). With that said, they have been quite a few best Mario games released before Sonic's first game, The original Mario Bros, Super Mario Bros 1, and of course my favorite Mario game of all times, Super Mario Bros 3.

I'm not being console bias, I have played both the Super Nintendo and the Sega Genesis, but by going with my interests, I got to go with Mario on this one.

I never liked Sonic, but Mario has always been a blast, especially since SMB2. And Mario is also far more adaptable than Sonic, has better powerups, and is just more interesting. That's my two cents on it anyway.

Whenever I hear someone say "Mario has no personality" or  "Mario is dull", I just can't help to cringe sometimes. Mario DOES (or at the very least, did) in fact have a personality that people tend to completely forget about or just flat out ignore for the sake of downplaying him. I would have to say Mario. I was never a big fan of the Sonic games, but played the Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games games and liked some of the characters. I feel like if you asked all of the 7 billion something people in the world, who is more recognizable, more people would say Mario than Sonic.

I prefer Mario because I find the games in that series more fun to play than the Sonic series however if we are talking about mascot wise then I would choose Sonic in terms of creativity is better than Mario.

Sonic for sure. I like to go fast. And on top of that, if they were to fight each other, Sonic would win by a mile. I really enjoyed the Sonic games growing up, but the Mario ones just didn't do that much for me. Plus Super Sonic is much cooler than Star Mario.

Now, as for mario. While I don't like the european and american super mario bros 2, I love all the other nes and SNES games including the real mario 2.

I'd go with Mario. My childhood is full of his games, and Sonic never appealed me, except for Sonic Colors, which is the only sonic game that I like. Mario is by far more entertaining, and funner too. Never fails to impress me.

Sonic but only because I don't like Mario. The new Sonic games aren't really that great but his old games were absolutely glorious. The old Mario games weren't that bad either, but I really just don't see the appeal to them.

I'm shocked that up until now, I hadn't made a post on this thread. Anyways, I definitely say that Mario is the better Retro Gaming Mascot because even though I prefer Sonic as a character, Mario has a much better selection of games in my opinion. Sonic even in the retro days had some major misses such as Sonic Blast, Sonic Labyrinth, the Sonic Drift games, and Sonic R. The only terrible games that Mario was in during the retro days were Mario is Missing and Hotel Mario. While I'm not a fan of Super Mario Bros 2, it's a classic in many other people's eyes. The bosses are less unique in Mario but at least they let the second player play. In Sonic the second player just does nothing but get left behind until the boss comes.Then when the boss comes you are the invincible one. That is all you are used for and I hate it. Mario actually lets the second player play the levels though. I also always found Sonic games way too easy with you only needing one ring to live.
