"In his time as President, Iwata oversaw some of the strongest (Wii, DS) and weakest (GameCube, Wii U) periods in Nintendo’s history as a video game company."

GameCube was one of Nintendo's "weakest periods"? Really? That's surprising to me because a lot of people STILL play it. Just look at the number of people streaming Super Smash Bros. Melee on Twitch right now.

Anyway that's some pretty sad and unfortunate news. I wonder who will replace him?

I can't even.

This man was like, amazing. Although a lot of us will never really know him that well, It's just terrible that he's gone. I'm at a loss of words here. Like seriously, this shocked me so much and I have no idea what to say.

Rest in peace
I can't even.

Wow...I don't know what to say. That's really sad. He's the reason we have great games like Smash Bros, Kirby, Star Fox, and many others too. He was a great guy, ran a great company, and made some great games. I hope his successor is just as good as he was.

tgags123 : I don't think Gamecube was a low point for Nintendo either. If anything, 1889-1979 were their worst years.

55 years of age is a little young to be dying.... Really reminds you of the fragility of the human body. Even the hardiest of men can be instantaneously bedridden by ill health. And even though that, in my opinion, the company has not been going in the best direction, its a shame to hear of his passing. Lets just hope that his successor is able to carry on Nintendo's portable gaming empire, and maybe even improve their standings in the home console market.

Oh my... this is really sad. I never knew that he ever had problems with bile duct growth so this is very sudden for me.

May he rest in peace and may he have an amazing successor.

tgags123 : Barring the Virtual Boy, GameCube was Nintendo's worst selling system prior to the Wii U actually. It was a fail sales wise, but a good system nonetheless.

This is so...sobering. I feel awful because not even a week ago I was telling a friend I wanted him replaced. And now this? Man, I know I didn't mean for something like this to happen, but it really makes me feel like scum. Guess that'll teach me not to speak ill of anyone regardless of whether I really mean anything bad or not.

I didn't like what he did with Nintendo, but he led them faithfully. And even just him being human and dying is just so saddening.

May he rest in peace....

I'm very sad right now. Like user said, it's because of him that we had Super Smash Bros., Kirby, and others. The gamecube failed, as well? But, it has great games, like Luigi's Mansion, Melee, and more.

R.I.P Satoru Iwata. You'll surely be missed.

Nooooo! Why?! This is really sad news...

This is really sudden for me, just like Pacman I didn't know he had health problems. I hope his replacement will become as good as him or even better. By the way, I don't think the period of the Gamecube was weak, many games still sound and are really awesome.

Rest in peace Satoru Iwata, President of the amazing Nintendo company. We'll miss you a lot.

Man, this sucks. Satoru may not have made the best decisions most of the time but he tried really hard to help Nintendo grow, I mean he even cut his own salary in half when the Wii U had poor sales! That's some real dedication.
I knew he had some health problems in the past because he underwent surgery, but just like most people I thought he was okay. It's really sad to hear he died on such a young age, just 55...
Rest in peace Satoru, many gamers and game producers will always remember you, even though there are some trolls everywhere saying things like 'Maybe Nintendo will make some good games now'. Your dedication and gentleness always made you a great person, even now that you passed away.

I wasn't planning in coming back on the boards till Sunday because me being on vacation (I'm posting this on my phone), and I was going to pull a Billythekidmonster move and think I stopped at 4,999 post and leave but come back a week later, but this news is far too importain. I'm saving my 5,000 post milestone till this Sunday.

When I heard about the news, I was completly sadden about his death and it came all of a sudden. This guy was truly a legend in the entire video gaming universe. I have look up to this person and was one of my childhood idols. When I heard news about his passing, I was really upset and sad.

RIP Iwata, you are truly a huge person in not just video gaming, but all of media, thank you for all your hard work, you were awesome.

Eirinn :   It's really a shame the Gamecube failed the way it did sales wise. While my favorite console is the ps2, I have to admit that the Gamecube, in almost every way, is a superior system. The controller is far more ergonomic, it has a higher clock speed on the CPU, and I think I read that the graphics are stronger as well. Even moving past the hardware, and even the peripherals such as the Gameboy player, every game I have played on the ps2 that had a Gamecube version such as Soul Calibur II, Resident Evil 4, and the Medal of Honor games, the Gamecube versions were better.

I heard about this sad news in the morning. I'm extremely saddened by this awful tragedy. I knew Satoru Iwata was having health issues, but I didn't realize they were this serious to where he could pass away so soon... This is a tragic day for the gaming industry as a whole. He was not only a great leader, but he also had a great personality, and he was a gamer, just like us. Without him, we wouldn't have video games like Kirby and Earthbound. RIP Satoru Iwata, and thank you for everything you've done for the gaming industry.

That's too bad. He was a great president and I absolutely loved some systems, mostly the Wii. Hopefully the next president of Nintendo will do their job as well or better that Satoru did.

I noticed this on Facebook. The man passed away at too young of an age, and Nintendo will surely miss him.

But, is it bad that I didn't think of the gaming world's loss because of his early death? I thought about how it would effect the Seattle Mariners since Nintendo owns the Seattle Mariners MLB team.

Vizzed.com is very expensive to keep alive! The Ads pay for the servers.

Vizzed has 3 TB worth of games and 1 TB worth of music.  This site is free to use but the ads barely pay for the monthly server fees.  If too many more people use ad block, the site cannot survive.

We prioritize the community over the site profits.  This is why we avoid using annoying (but high paying) ads like most other sites which include popups, obnoxious sounds and animations, malware, and other forms of intrusiveness.  We'll do our part to never resort to these types of ads, please do your part by helping support this site by adding Vizzed.com to your ad blocking whitelist.
