"If Christianity isn't a religion, then why do Christians sound defensive and get their backs up...The bottom line is that Christianity still checks off all the boxes for religion: a holy book, religious symbols and rituals, tax-exempt churches...I mean no offence when I say this, but I believe knowingly playing fast-and-loose with words is a form of dishonesty."

This was a certain lady's response to comments on Facebook the other day to the "famous" atheist and author of the book, "The origin of nothing", Lawrence Krauss's statement ,  "Religion could be gone in a generation".  There were obviously a couple of things discussed, but why do Christians get offended when they are equated to a religion?

I cannot put it better than Evangelist Ray Comfort and I wholeheartedly agree with this:

"There’s a good reason why Christians (as opposed to religious people) shudder with offense when we are called “religious.” When Jesus preached His first sermon in His home town of Nazareth religious people tried to kill Him.  scripture records that the religious leaders of His day tried to take His life ten times before He freely gave it at the cross. Throughout each of the gospels He calls them snakes and hypocrites, and other wonderfully descriptive politically incorrect names.  It was religious people who stoned the prophets of God, crucified the Son of God, murdered the Apostles, and shed the blood of millions of Christians down through history. And it is the “religious” who are steeped in self-righteousness, resist the gospel of God’s grace, use religion for their own political gain, are guilty of pedophilia, and cling to empty pomp and ceremony.  So call me every filthy name under the sun, hate me, mock me and spit on me, and I won’t be offended. But don’t call me “religious,” because religious I am not."

The only thing that I'll say is that "The origin of nothing" is actually titled "A Universe from Nothing".

SoL@R : I suppose, but then that makes everyone wrong. No matter how you look at it, assuming that there is never a case where something can come from nothing, no one can be correct.

SoL@R : True, I may fall into this category, but not quite to the degree of your post. It's not that we outright lie. It's more of the way we view things, whereas others will just view us as religious just because we have "THE" (Not "a", as you said) HOLY BOOK, we have rituals and all the rest. The thing essentially is that many people see themselves as Christians, and feel that Christianity is Beyond religion. I mean, what other religion brings God to earth to sacrifice himself, to show us the way, so that we could live with HIM one day. Christianity says that we cannot achieve purity or perfection, because we are born in sin. Every other religion, and many cults, say that you have to live a certain way and follow certain rules. The problem with that is that it ignores our inability to do so. We are flawed, and most religions just push you to not be flawed without changing anything in your life. JESUS' sacrifice transforms us from the inside out to give us the desire to live in HIS footsteps. Yes, we will always fall under the category of "religion", but in all reality...truly following the LORD is Beyond religion.

Sop281: All right, let's say that something can come from nothing...why does it not happen? Why do houses not build themselves? If our universe came into being from nothing, without any help at all, what triggered it. And if you are going to try to give me a scientific explanation, I should mention that true science is observable, testable, and repeatable. Every theory of the origin of everything defies all three requirements, yet everyone wants to say that they have a scientific explanation. Why?

FaithFighter: I think you misunderstand other religions, based off of your post, but I'll set that aside.

"All right, let's say that something can come from nothing...why does it not happen? Why do houses not build themselves?" It doesn't happen because there's nothing there, in reference to the first piece. In regards to building houses, that doesn't directly correlate with something coming from nothing. Something is there, and something helps build that something. That's not nothing.

"If our universe came into being from nothing, without any help at all, what triggered it. And if you are going to try to give me a scientific explanation, I should mention that true science is observable, testable, and repeatable. Every theory of the origin of everything defies all three requirements, yet everyone wants to say that they have a scientific explanation. Why?" I don't understand complex scientific explanations for the origin of the universe, for the most part, given that many of them require extensive knowledge of physical properties of the universe. However, judging from what I have heard, I am assuming that the explanations use something that exists, and that something has been observed, and that is applied to origin. Again, I'm very unsure if this is what actually happens, but I believe that is a fair assessment. Now, I may not necessarily agree with their theories, that being said, even with regards to their theories not literally being able to have a basis in the realm of observation, testing, or repeating, their theory would not be dissimilar to one based off a religious foundation. That is to say, you cannot observe, test, or repeat those theories. No disrespect intended, but they are both fair game as origins because they all have foundations in pure speculation.

Again, I'm not a science expert, and I have little knowledge when it comes to the many purportedly scientific explanations of the origins of the universe, but regardless of your position, there is no real way of knowing if you are, in fact, correct.

sop281 :  Well, think through this with me: if nothing cannot produce something, and yet something exists, then it follows necessarily that something has always existed in order to bring the something into existence. Think of it this way:

1. If there ever was a time that absolutely nothing existed, nothing would exist now.
2. Something exists now.
3. Therefore, there was never a time that absolutely nothing existed.

So the only question remains, who or what then existed when there was never a time that absolutely nothing existed?  If you think logically about this, then the answer is this.  Something or someone must be eternal in order for it to always exist.  Am I right?  Something or someone outside of time must exist to fulfill this criteria because eternity is not bound to time, right?  So there must have been a Creator that's outside of time, that's eternal, that always existed to bring everything else into existence.  On the other hand, someone who has always existed does not need a creator or someone to have brought Him into existence, but the universe falls into an entirely different category. As the scientific discoveries have shown, it has not always existed and anything that begins to exist requires a cause or maker. Things don’t just pop into existence all on their own.  Once again, nothing does not produce something.

Does this makes sense to you?

sop281 :  So what is truth then?  Who defined truth in the first place?  Is it true that the PC / laptop you are typing on was created / manufactured by someone?  You haven't seen that "someone" but you know that the PC had a creator, right?  It's exactly the same with the universe.  The whole of creation (stars, planets, mountains, thunderstorms, waves etc.) testifies of the existence of God, our Creator.  Deep down everybody knows there is a God.  A God that one day will hold them accountable for every idle word spoken, every evil deed done, but they willfully suppress the knowledge of God, because they enjoy living out their sinful lives.  They don't want to be held responsible for the stuff they do that they know is wrong.  So they carry on, blissfully unaware that they are steering blindly towards a cliff.  A rude awakening awaits those who scoff at this and keep on insisting there's no God, no judgment, no hell...  and it's exactly because of this that some people live the way the want, without any responsibility.  They lie, steal, hate, blaspheme, cheat, get drunk, watch porn without any remorse, without any sense of guilt because for them there's no afterlife.  This life here on earth, for them, this is it.  This is their best life now and my heart breaks for them, because the truth is, when you die, you enter eternity.  Eternity in everlasting torment or eternity in paradise.  The thing is, none of us on this earth is good.  We all have lied, stolen, lusted after a woman / man, used God's name in vain etc. and if God judges us according to these things we will be guilty and be sentenced to eternal torment in hell.  The Bible is very clear about this.  1 Corinthians 6:9-10 - Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God.

God, believe it or not, does not want anyone to perish.  2 Peter 3:9 - The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise,as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.
God does not want anyone to end up in hell, so He made a way.  He sent His only Son, Jesus Christ to suffer and die on the cross for the punishment that was meant for you and me.  The penalty you and I deserve, Jesus took upon Himself so that you and I can go free.  That's how much God loves you.  We broke God's Law, but Jesus paid our fine. Then He rose from the grave and defeated death. If you repent and trust in Him, God will forgive your sins and grant you everlasting life.  You will pass from darkness (being blinded from the truth) to light (realizing, seeking and seeing the truth).

I don't know what your beliefs are and you might laugh at this or whatever.  That's okay.  The thing is, if I am wrong and there actually is no God, no judgment, no hell - then I have nothing to lose.   Assuming you don't believe in God, heaven, hell etc. and you are wrong, then you have everything to lose and I honestly do not want to see you lose anything.

The way I see it, true religion is itself a belief in God. It does not necessarily mean going to church every week and following every commandment to the letter. The commandments were made for our sake, not to restrict our freedoms. The same is true of religion. The activity of going to church is not supposed to be a burden. It is supposed to uplift us and prepare us for the upcoming week, so that we will not fall into temptation. We are not supposed to go to church simply because we are told to do so. We should go because we love God, and want to become Christlike. Therefore, if a church is beneficial, where people can go to support each other in Christ, so that they may more fully help each other and relieve each other's burdens, would God not have instituted His own church? Did Jesus not do this in His lifetime? If this is true, then there is only one true church, and the discovery of it should be an important goal. If there is no true church currently on the Earth today, then just because there is none does not mean we cannot meet in a religious manner to discuss Christ and how to become like Him.

Well, this is interesting. I will give an analysis on this subject as I am intrigued at the moment. In all honesty I do not find the problem to be religion itself nor do I see religion to be a problem for anyone. Also, on this matter I do not find where people who are not religious are an issue either.
The whole fact of the matter simply put is a problem with communication. This is a subject I just recently touched on in another post. To stress the importance of that though on this particular subject and I just mean the importance of communication is simply to say that without that we get nowheres and certainly not into heaven if that is where you see yourself going if that is your belief I shall call it but, the same goes for hell too or whatever it may be that is within your beliefs and such.
At some point there has to be a form of communication and it must be understood in order for any said door, to open and work "validly",  whether it be one that you take towards a career, or one where you pursue feelings. And I will say when I use the word "validly" it does not mean you have to prove it. That is simply one thing which is to know thyself. Someone I was once a friend to is a fine example of this point. He said he was gay and that really he did not have to prove that to anyone. That is valid as he knows himself and no one really ever knows anyone better than the way they know themself.
So many people will more often than not point at religion and say that is the problem without even bothering to reflect on their own fingers pointing back at their own self while that other singular finger is pointed in a different direction. To finalize my point I will place your thread title into a new context: The problem with religion is, lack of empirical evidence. I do hope I got the right word on empirical, anyways the thing with religion all these years in the whole entirety of how there is the actual problem is that really they are still for any religion on that matter establishing the substantive evidence needed to back themselves up and "validly" hold their own. This does not diminish belief but, actually reinforce the need for the idea that it is worth it to know the truth. Now you see what I have done here? By changing the context of your thread (not that I was actually doing that, this is an example to prove a point) I have created a whole new type of communication that invariably has a new meaning because it says something else. Perhaps you see now my point. So when you see the next "religious person" or "atheist" or "fellow christian" you can ask why all you want, you can cry it out to the heavens if you will but, you will get nowheres without the motive and that is communication.

Okay I will try to give my explanation on this. I'm a Christian who happens to be a Biologist/forecaster. Some mentioned the creator. I believe that God is the creator and that he created things. Some other Christians believe in a young earth and that God created the Earth in just 7 days. However, my question is how do we know what a day was in God's time. It could have been your 24 hour day, it could have been 100 years, 1,000 years or even a million or more years. The Bottom line is God created all life one way or another.

Some Christians say they are not in a religion that is is a relationship with Christ. I will agree with that because God became a man (through the son Jesus Christ) died on the cross and rose. For God so loved the World he begotten his only son and who ever believes in him shall have eternal life. Romans 10:9 says If you will confess with your mouth and believe that Jesus is the son of God you shall be saved.

But by definition we are a religion some branches of Christianity have rituals. Some Christians have dietary restrictions, others fast, others take communion, which I participate in communion, So like other religions we do have rituals so that is why we are classified as a religion

As for problems in Christianity a lot of people have done bad things and claim to be Christian. In reality they are not true Christians. The Bible tells us many false prophets and teachers will come but you will  know by the fruit they bear. The people who do bad things claiming to be Christians or phonies. for example several priests used their position as a church leader to do horrible things to children, others have done other bad things. If you look at all religions you will find several bad examples of people using religion to do evil.

We as human beings are flawed by nature. We are corrupt and evil when you think about it no one is good. Christianity even teaches this as no one is righteous not one all for short of the Glory of God.

I hope this helps you and remember Jesus loves you and he died for everybody and rose on the 3rd day.  By the way I did not find your post offensive
