When a game you're interested in comes out, do you get it in the first few weeks of it being released, or do you wait until the hype dies down, or the price drops?

I have a tendency to wait, regardless how badly I want the game for a couple of reasons. One is what you said. I like to wait on the new releases, specially if it's a highly anticipated/popular game due to the hype. The more popular the game is, the more people who wants to get their hands on the title. Two, it's brand new, there's really no telling if all the bugs are fixed, specially the companies who have problems with glitchy games. Three, in todays economy. It's hard to afford some of these games. I'm out of a job for the time being, so I'm broke. The main game I'm waiting on is the new Metal Gear Solid 5!

I almost always wait.  How long I wait depends on the game.  For a Lego game, I'll wait a long time, until I can grab it on Steam for $5-8 or so.  I got Pokemon X a month or two after its release since it was given free with Angry Birds Space.  It all depends on the sale.  If the sale is big enough, it doesn't matter how long the game has been out, if I have the money and it's in my budget, I'll get it.  But sometimes I'll come to regret it later.  I bought Guacamelee! a little while ago when it was on sale for $7.50 on the Humble Store.  Less than a week ago, it went for $3.75.  Fantastic game, but a bit of a disappointment that I had to trade a lot to get the game.

For me, it's not about timing. It's about when/if I get the money. LOL!

I generally will wait, though. For example, I waited months to get Black Ops 2, when I really wanted it. I think the only game I've gotten in the first week (it was a preorder) was Fire Emblem: Awakening. Great game, worth the money, so I'm pleased with that purchase.

I will wait most definitely and buy it used at for most at half price. Why? Well I have bills to pay and stuff you know... I will usually know what I want and like and will get it despite the hype and what not. Only thing that changes really is the price. I try to keep myself back and wait until a week when the price drops from £5 - £15 but sometimes if it is a game that I have been waiting for, for a very long time I just go straight in there with no questions asked.
Other than that I pre-order. Usually if I order off of amazon I get the better deal though if I choose free delivery it can be one day late. I could go the mile and buy the super delivery and get it a day early. I did that one when I was younger for when the Johto remakes came out for the DS.

To be honest, I would purchase this specific video game whenever I am able to. I do not mind prices because I have not been purchasing many video games lately. I have been determined to play only one video game lately and that video game is obviously Call of Duty: Ghosts. Haha!
