Well it really depends, I used to have a huge friends list and I would have friends from 10-14 users. I deleted a lot of inactive users and now I only have so many friends on my list. Not a  lot of my friends are ever on at the same time. I  always see most of them at different times. Sometimes I wish they were all in chat at once, that would be pretty awesome!
