So, some of you might remember that I had been engaged for several years (four, to be precise)... well... I got tired of waiting. Talked with the fiance, and we decided to just go for it. This lead to several phone calls, lots of hours on Priceline, shopping (ugh) and in about a month's time we had planned a wedding. We flew out to Los Angeles where our families reside and got married last Wednesday (holy crap, I've been married for a week!)

So yeah... that happened. We had wanted to do it on our original anniversary, but didn't have the time... so now our anniversary is a month later. It works.

Congrats for the marriage. Very cool.

The line about "getting tired of waiting" concerns me.  If you were happy together, you have a great relationship, things were fine, why force the issue and get married?  Does a piece of paper and a ring and a 1 day event really change anything?  Marriage is a wonderful thing and I've been married going on 8 years.  It challenges me, makes me work to be a better person and keeps my on my toes.  You have a different path than we did but it just kinda happened organically.  Relationships are kinda like farts.  If you have to force it, it might be poop.

What happened that the natural progression of the relationship hadn't found you married just yet?  Why four years?

But seriously, good for you.  Getting married was the greatest thing I ever experienced, including having a kid.  I love my wife more dearly than anything else and I know she reciprocates.  We're a team and we're successful and we both work hard at our relationship and things are great.  I hope you see every success and you do better than we do.  And was there an open bar?  Tell me open bar.

warmaker : The cost of the wedding is what delayed us four years. Right after we got engaged, we moved across the country and between that and bad job prospects here, haven't been able to get the money together. What I got tired of was waiting to have enough money, so we took what we had, combined it with the help we could get from our parents, and made it work. Honestly, it really doesn't change much in our relationship besides the legal stuff, we've been together for six years and it already felt like we were married... now it's just official.

No open bar, but we set aside enough money that people could get what they wanted.

Eniitan : Thanks. Yeah, eventually we plan to have kids when the financials are more stable (again with the money, right?) Our friend is already trying to talk us into planning to have in like a year or so when she tries for kid #2 so they can grow up together... which I wouldn't mind if they didn't live on the other side of the country.

I know that you look down on me as a little zealot on this site, but I would like to congratulate you all the same. That is truely something worth sharing. I hope you have a great life. It sounds like you're doing good if it's already been six years. I think that most realationships fail after the first or second year, so if you're this far, then that's good.

Elara : wow congrats this is a huge life milestone i know i don't know you but this is a great time now , take care of your man

Elara : My wife and I were the same way. We were together for 6 years before we got married, and lived together for 4 of those years, so life after marriage wasn't really any different. For us, lie you, it was money reasons, partly. Another big factor was that we were both still in college, and we wanted that to be the main focus. Didn't want to add in a marriage and possibility of kids while we are still in school, so we waited. We got married almost 2 years ago (less than a month will be our anniversary), and we don't have kids yet. Money being the issue, since we have not been able to find a place where we BOTH can get teaching jobs that last. So I understand you situation completely . Congrats to you. Very sudden post here. rcarter2 : Yeah, I think I mentioned it like once before the ceremony... any tips for how to go about filing jointly for things? I still need to look into health insurance and sadly food stamps until he gets work and I can get a teaching job(I qualified on my own, but not for enough to make a difference in our budget). I hate working for the Walmart corporation sometimes.

Elara : Not really any tips. When my wife and I got teaching jobs, before the contracts start or renew, you go over health insurance. We meet with the person in the school district office to work out the filing. Bank accounts are pretty simple. Just go there together and set one up.
