Last philosophical question for today! I feel it is much better to be respected than be liked. Respect has a much stronger impact on a person's life...from the certain job offers they may get, the more people they can influence due to whatever has made them respected in the first place, etc. As for being liked, it really isn't going to get you anywhere. Sure, maybe a CEO of a company likes you, and decides to hire you...not every CEO is going to like you. But if you are respected, then many more CEOs will look at you with a strong attitude, confident you can get the job done, and therefore many CEOs may offer you jobs. I personally don't care if I am liked or not liked. Many popular kids at my high school could care less about people like me...I am trying to do the best I can to get good grades and not follow the wrong crowd...they just call people like me try-hards or goody two-shoes. Of course, I don't want to build up a bad reputation, for that also has an impact on life, but respect is more important to me than being liked. Tell me what you think! It's DEFINITELY better to be respected. I've actually known a person or two who I didn't like at ALL, but I respected them. One of those people used to be my current boss. Before the events going on this year, I totally was in awe of what she accomplished and how she handled herself. However, I didn't like her very much. It's certainly possible, and it's one of the first things I tell my students... that above all, they need to show respect. They can dislike me, and still show me respect. I think that unfortunately, they're a bit too young to understand the concept but.... I can try, right? As someone who does NOT get respect from someone who does not like her... I have to say it's very hard not getting any respect. My situations this year are so hard to bear because of that lack of respect. It's a very, very emotionally painful experience and makes someone feel like they have no dignity. For me this is an easy and simple answer. I would rather be a respected individual than liked. by others. I would rather make a good impression on people with my own skills and what i've done than have a personality that makes me fit into crowds and such. When I was in high school I was in the same spot as you for the most part despite some hiccups in my life. Being liked is honestly something that can be faked or something that can only last for so long. And when everyone parts ways, what then? Did being liked make any big impacts that make people interested in what you do? Not likely. In my experience with high school, I was focused on grades and what I wanted to do with my life. Luckily I came across the answer my Sophomore year and joined an Electronics Career Tech Program offered at my school. I busted my butt every day to understand the material, use it, and achieve high grades. Most of the other students that joined the program just to join it because they thought it would be fun hated me for my work ethic and the fact we had positions and I was usually "hired" as the "shop manager" since we treated our work areas and classroom as job. I was the guy and cracked down on everyone screwing around and made sure work was getting done while I did my own. In the end, those who didn't drop out of the program respected me for keeping them on task and I could be a dependable person if they had questions because I understood the material being taught. It was both a combination of being like and respected, it was bad but I would rather be known for helping those who needed it and how hard I worked, I know my teacher did and so did the director of the Career Tech Program. Near the end of my Senior year the director asked me if I wanted to possibly teach classes on the side with my Electronics teacher because of how well I did. I declined because I wanted to finish the year up but because of how well I did in Electronics I was able to land a job in a computer repair store which was great. So to ultimately sum it up, respect is something that goes a long way than being liked and respect is something that should always be held higher than being liked by others. I think it is more important to be respected than liked, because people can like you but not necessarily respect you. If you are respected than you will not be treated poorly and people will sort of look up to you. They can still like you, but you won't be a common target to be bullied on if you are well respected. On the other hand, you can be liked and be popular, but you can be bullied or disrespected. I would much rather be respected for my good grades, skill, effort and dedication to school rather than just be popular. There are plenty of smart people out in the world who are very successful, but they are also very well respected individuals. I just find it more important to be respected and looked up to as a role model rather than just be liked. I am respected by my younger brother and sister because I am a good role model and I am also their older brother and they look up to me because of this. Like sidewinder said, being respected gives a much greater impact and influence on others to look up to you and follow in your footsteps to do great things. That is why I value being respected and looked up to as a role model over just being popular and liked. Because you can be liked for the wrong reasons and you can be a bad person and a bad role model but still be popular, while on the other hand respect is much more meaningful and it gives a greater impact than just being liked. So that is my opinion on it and that is how I choose to look at the matter, and apparently a lot of people think so as well. I just value being respected and looked up to over just being popular. I would definitely say respected. I'm liked by my brothers, but they have literally no respect for me. It's awful. With being respected people will actually listen to you and place a higher value on your input. I would definitely say respected. I'm liked by my brothers, but they have literally no respect for me. I think, it's really the part of your life you are looking at that changes the answer to this questions. On one side you have your career and financial part of your life. If you are respected here it's gonna do you some major good and get your life on the right track. But if you care more about your friends respect than their how much they like you and you like them then.... well it's not much different than a controlling father forcing their son to call them "sir." Sure, respect is important in a friendship but you still need to make sure that you actually like each other enough to be friends. So in my opinion, you need both as much as you need either. |

I would say respect is greater than being liked, however I would also say that I think people place too much stock on trying to make people like them, or earn their respect. Yours is the most important view in your life.

If you respect others then others will respond to that and being liked is an added bonus later on because if your not respected then others won't bother caring about what you think and if your liked then you'll not be able to get a chance to connect with others more deep without respect to others |

Sidewinder : Anyone can be liked from the offset of meeting some one for the first time, but it takes work to be respected, and where is being liked going to get you? Being liked by a CEO might get you the job in the first place but being respected is going to get you that promotion. Therefore, if you haven't all ready noticed, I'm on the side of respect. Emotionally, I think many people, including myself, want to be liked before most other things. But when reason on it, we realize respect is far more important. It can help you perform great things in life and help you have a sense of worth. I think we can all think of someone we like, but maybe don't respect as much as others. Do you really want to be like that person? I think we can all think of someone we like, but maybe don't respect as much as others. Do you really want to be like that person? |

Sidewinder : I would rather be respected then Liked friends come and go but respect is a hard thing to earn and once you lose it, its like pushing a giant rock up a cliff to get it back. Some folks have a skewed perception on this in regards to social standings ie highschools etc just do what you think is right and respect will come from those of like minded people and you will make friends through that in my opinion Later DiabeticZach |

I am not sure it is possible to answer this question. You must need some respect to be liked, you can not be liked without it or you will be simply disliked. Both are of course very important in a relationship with anyone. So I am afraid I can not answer this, so I guess my post ends here. You may be thinking I posted for no reason but my post has a reasonable opinion. |

I think both are important. if you are not liked, it is unlikely that you'll be 100% respected and you can be respected but not as much as respected when you are liked.
So, my opinion is that you must be liked to be respected. Note: If you respect someone, well, someone will respect you too! Vizzed is a good example!! Its better to be respected first before being liked. Even if someone doesn't like you respect them at all cost or your heading for a collision with someone else....it takes time to be respected but you will get there eventually, all it takes is time...in doing so it will happen. Its not good not to like someone because of a few things that has happened. Be the better person and do whats right, making simple choices like that will help in life someway. ^-^ |

It's pretty much better off being more respected to than just liked to, the reason why that is, someone will like you and all, but the thing you pretty much need is for that perosn to respect you. Respect > Liked Respect > Liked |

I feel like they are related in a way. People that like you usually respect you too, and vixe versa. |
