With the release of the Nintendo switch, you might be wondering if Microsoft and Sony will release their version of the switch. The Nintendo Switch isn't the first home/portable combo console as Sony experimented first with the technology releasing the PlayStation Vita but it leaves you wondering if Sony will revisit home/portable combo consoles again with it possibly replacing the PlayStation to better compete with Nintendo. Surely, if they decide to not do this and just continue with the playstation (It would be PlayStation 5) would they be able to sell the same amount of consoles as they had in the past or would sales tank because they can't take it on the go? The same can be said for Xbox as well. What I think may happen if Sony continues with the playstation and decides to play dead is that it would take the PlayStation vita trending on Facebook, Twitter etc before they realize that they need take the PSV and update it to compete with the switch. I feel with Xbox's version of the switch, they have the potential to attract new people who previously haven't bought an Xbox console which would increase sales and also increase sales on Xbox exclusive titles. The same can be said with Sony as I'm sure they have fair of PlayStation exclusive titles. Since it looks like the Switch is the only 9th generation console known, it makes you wonder what Microsoft and Sony have up their sleeves to compete with the switch. Sure, they could continue with what they have but sales will probably tank for them since they can't take it on the go such as car rides etc which would give Nintendo a boost in sales and also people who haven't previously bought a Nintendo console in the past meaning they have a good chance to recapture their wii era audience and much more. What do you think? Do Xbox and Sony have something up their sleeves for a 9th generation competitor to the switch or will they do what they've been doing since their inception which is something Nintendo has abandoned. I personally think the switch will be the last console released by Nintendo with just upgrades being released by them to get up to date with current TV's and to upgrade hardware etc. If Microsoft and Sony jump aboard the home/portable combo console boat, the ninth generation could be the last generation for them with the 10th and beyond being focused on computer games and people not umping aboard the home/portable console boat.

Frankly, I consider the attraction towards the Nintendo Switch to be how cheap it is.

Sony and Microsoft most likely will try to make some bigger, better, more expensive thing that may or may not do as well depending on marketing and advertisement.

In the end, the last time Sony and Microsoft competed with Nintendo, we got the Kinect and Playstation Move which no one liked. I think Sony and Microsoft should compete and Nintendo should just release whatever they want.

Console warring is kinda dumb, it would be better if they tried to make their own thing instead of trying to make a [thing] better than [company] makes it.

yoshirulez! : About the only thing the Kinnect would be popular with would be the exercise/dance games released on the console. I think Sony's is the same but haven't heard of it till now but if it is then the same thing applies. I think the switch will wiin if Xbox and Sony continue the route Nintendo has abandoned.

Doubt it since the Switch isn't THAT popular. It's doing better than the wii U but that isn't saying too much considering that console was a big failure marketing and sales wise. What really prompted Sony and Microsoft to get into motion gaming after seeing the wii was likely how much it was selling. They may intergrate some sort of limited portability similarly to how you could use your ps vita or smartphone as a screen to play PS4 games but I doubt they would make it fully portable due to how that would jack up the price of the console or risk a compromise in terms of graphical exclusives. A lot of the big exclusives on the PS4 and XB1 take advantage of the graphical prowess trying to make games look realistic which isn't really the case with the Switch since they're usually highly stylized so it wouldn't really work as well.

The Switch isn't in direct competition with PlayStation and Xbox really. I mean yeah they compete technically since they're both part of the same industry, but technicalities aside, not so much.

To give you an idea of how little it impacts PlayStation, the Switch's pack in games are being outsold by PlayStation's exclusives. Yes, the Switch is popular at current, or so it seems, but it isn't going to make a huge impact on the face of the game market. The average Xbox or PlayStation gamer doesn't care that much about Nintendo, as they cater to two very different crowds. There's some overlap, but not enough to make much difference.

There's no chance that the Switch will cause PS4 or Xbox to tank. Even after it's release their sales in hardware and software are still just as healthy, and it'll stay that way. And unfortunately mobile gaming isn't that important anymore imo, simply because frankly most people are at home when they aren't working these days, due to the fact that almost everything we do is done online, and this is backed by the statistic that the average person has 1.5 friends in real life (because we don't get out and interact anymore).

Now Sony has had a patent surface publicly here recently that has inspired articles about how they're making their own Switch inspired system, but that's misleading since the patent was filed long before the Switch was revealed.

As for Move and Kinnect, don't forget that PlayStation's EyeToy existed a full generation before the Wii. So was move made to rip the Wii? Quite possibly. Also possible is that it was just the next evolution of the EyeToy from the previous generation.

Finally, the difference in generational cycles between PlayStation or Xbox and Nintendo isn't an issue either — it's been there for five or six years. The real question is, is the Switch generation 9, or improved hardware in generation 8? Because if it's generation 9 then PlayStation probably won't have a generation 9 entry, and if they do, then there will probably be two Nintendo systems releasing between PS5 and PS6.

In short, all three companies have my respect, and they all do their own thing well, but as of now, the Switch isn't going to change anything but Nintendo. Now if it does well enough to really bring Nintendo back up to what it once was, then Nintendo could cause PlayStation and Xbox some concern next generation. But yeah, even Nintendo has said they don't pay any real mind to the others and what they do.

yoshirulez! : I have to disagree in a big way. While I hate to see people hating on one another and all that nonsense among gamers in the console war stuff, I do think the companies warring among themselves is key. That drives them to work harder on quality products and maintaining good prices. MS and PS trying to outdo each other at what they do is a huge benefit to gamers. In fact it'd do Nintendo good to have a direct competitor too. The pressure to succeed above the other guy is what drives innovation, creativity, production values, and fair pricing.
