So the other day I went with my dad to the laundromat to help him carry the clothes (no car), and as expected it was pretty hot inside and even hotter outside. This is all bad enough as it is, but it's made even worse for me by the fact that I had a heat stroke at age thirteen or fourteen and as a result I have an incredibly low tolerance a for heat. So by the time I made it home I was so weak that I could hardly walk or breathe - as in I doubt I could have made it a few more blocks even - and I was sick. All I could do was set the basket down and collapse on my bed for a while under the air conditioning and rest until I felt normal enough to get back on my feet. This is normal for me now.

So this made me start wondering: have any of you ever had any sort of health problem that had permanent effects on you? I'm not talking about chronic conditions, I'm talking about damage being done that has changed your health and/or body for the rest of your life. This includes injuries as well.

I used to have asthma when I was younger. In vigorous cardio workouts (e.g.: running) in the present, I would always need a longer break than what others are able to have after I do any of these workouts. For example, if people get a 2 minute break after a cardio workout, I would need double or triple the amount of those minutes for my break. Not to also mention that my lungs feel weaker due to improper ventilation for my body. This doesn't happen to me when I do weight lifting, weight workouts, ab workouts, and etc. It only happens after I do an intense cardio workout which is very weird to me. I can only run for a short amount of time due this problem sadly. My friend would call this term "sports asthma" or something similar in that regard.

Well for starters I was born 2 months prematurely. There's a reason for that I'm not going to disclose. It resulted in me having reduced vision and hearing on my right eye and right ear. This hasn't caused me that many problems though since my body has learned to compensate thus I haven't needed to use glasses or anything of the sort. I've become far sighted on one eye and near sighted on the other. I do seem to suffer from a lot of dizzyness recently though which I think is from strain that creates on my eyes so I may end up having to get them later on. It also caused me to have a weaker immune system resulting in me getting sick a lot when i was younger. Especially as a baby to the point where I was near death a few times. After I entered puberty though I noticed that it happened less so and now I don't really get sick that often.

Other than that I feel off a ladder when I was younger hitting my head which caused my mouth to bleed. I already had an overbite at the time but it caused my front teeth to stand out more. I'll likely be getting braces sometimes this year though so I'll hopefully be able to fix that. I also had to veer out of the way of a reckless driver a few years ago. That caused me to fall of my bike and chip off part of one of my front teeth. Didn't really cause me many problems aside from the pain when it happened though since it was fixed fairly quickly.

I don't know if i can say it appropriate enough, but i'll try anyway:

I was abused by my father when i was 1.5 years old. My mother got abused very heavy too, and we decided to leave the camper my father lived in. And my mother apparently seeked for a new father like 12.5 years long, and when i was 13 we finally found the perfect stepfather for me. But back to 2001, because that year gave a lot of terrible memories, which are hidden somewhere in my brain and the 'door' to it is opened for a very tiny bit. That means i have some memories coming above sometimes. I had a strange feeling when i saw my mom hugging me as a baby, and i knew how the camper looked like and that is actually was a camper overall. These memories are hidden, and the anger behind it is hidden too. My mother is kind of afraid that if EVERYTHING comes out, i might have a trauma and i'll be so mad towards my father that i could kill him. And i got to admit: I am afraid for it too.

That anger is the thing that has a permanent(?) effect on me. Currently, i need to control my anger first in order to focus on this moment.

Another thing would be a disease i had in 2003. I told this before in another thread, but i'll say it here too.

The disease's name is something i cannot remember, but i do know that i couldn't eat or drink with this disease. The doctors tried to do anything, but i threw up every single type of food/drink. I was dying when it was July 2003, and got revived by my mother's love. I made this part a bit quicker, as i don't want to place a long piece of text here. But the disease left behind something weird, i think: The fact that i can't be fat, and always stay thin. I don't eat much because i don't feel whether i'm hungry or not, and maybe this disease has to do something with it.

I don't think I've been permanently damaged by anything after I was born. More like before I was born. Asperger's syndrome mostly has mental effects, but there is a chance it can have small physical effects, though most of the time people grow out of them. For instance, I was very sensitive to sound and temperature. I would be cold when it's not really that cold, I couldn't sit in the front seats at a movie theater because it was too loud. I've thankfully grown out of both of those, and I don't see anything physically damaged now.

A year before I was diagnosed with my chronic disease I had to undergo surgery to root out a fistula. Since I had it in the inner part of my buttocks, that meant I couldn't sit down after the surgery for about two weeks. Since then on, I can hardly spend more than an hour sitting down, and I'm too uncomfortable in hard chairs or surfaces. It has had an effect at school, mostly exams, when travelling by car and plane, basically at anything that meant sitting down for a long period of time. Due to that, I also have developed a quirk to rarely sit down and taking breaks to get up from time to time.

Besides that, I remember one day playing tennis, where I attempted to return a heavy shot from one of my teachers and fell to the ground. It was a clay court, which meant a big wound in my knee. The scar is still visible after more than a decade, so it surely was a big blow to my then developing body.

I tweaked my back pretty bad at one point doing some intense landscaping work. At the time I was strung out on painkillers, so I would just use those to numb the pain until it finally healed. That being said, my back's never been the same. It constantly feels like a dull knife is placed in my lower back and is being twisted at all times. It gets to the point it's unbearable if I'm on my feet for too long (about 6-8+ hours, depending on the day). I really need to see a doctor for this, and keep putting it off for one reason or another. I'm way too young to be going through this kind of thing lol. Other than the pain itself, it doesn't hold me back at all, but it's still enough to be a hindrance, or just plain misery in certain situations.

I can't really come up with anything major. Other than than my right wrist being stiff all the time from gaming, as discussed before, I had a really really bad sinus infection probably 8 years ago. My head was completely blocked, and when anything came out, it was all kinduh different colors from pastel green to neon yellow, all the way to dark brown and blood red with a consistency ranging from thin slime to dry hot glue.... Never went to the doctor, just drank a lot of orange juice and popped decongestants and Tylenol to try and put up with the feeling that my skull was gonna split open and my head explode. My upper respiratory system hasn't been the same since, and I've been getting mild sinus infections annually.

Other than that, I was climbing a tree, got about 3 feet off of the ground and chickened out and gashed my left leg open on a sharp twig climbing down. Again, never got stitches or anything, but there's still a scar there and it's slightly tender to touch, so I likely have nerve damage. That was probably 12 years ago.

When I was, say, seven, I got my head smashed with a ~2 lb block of wood...had a big cut in my head and didn't get stitches, just some type of weird glue put on my head...Every time I touch my head in that spot, I get a headache so badly that I want to burst into tears.

Well I have had two surgeries that had later impacts. When I was about 20 I had Acid Reflux disease really really bad. It was so bad that acid would come up and burn my mouth. I needed to have surgery. So I had acid reflux surgery and hernia surgery at the same time. What they did was repair my hernia, then they took the top part of my stomach and wrapped it around my esophagus to shut off the acid. This stopped my acid reflux. But cause my esophagus was tightened. I can't eat certain foods like bread cause they get hung and I have to drink hot liquid to get it down. i'm also easy to get chocked on certain foods.

Second would be my Brain Tumor I had at age 24. Now Granted it was non cancerous but it was growing and if I didn't have it removed the surgeon said I would die. The tumor was located under the frontal lobe but right on the pituitary gland. The Tumor was removed successfully. But my pituitary gland was damaged so it has messed up my endocrine system in some areas.

I think I got one. When apart from the illness I was born with the surgery I had for my deaf ear had caused certain things. Because more than 6 ribs of mine was taken out to be placed onto my left ear. Since then I have felt things have not been right. Like the type of food that I can eat and all. I felt that surgery made it more worse in a way. Since it was done like 3 times. The first one was horrible the second one was even more horrible and the last one was bearable. :/

Mine are not as bad as others listed. I have a few small scars from a staff infection I got while helping dig up blackberry bushes a couple of years ago. I had cut my hand a little on a thorn through my gloves and it got in that way. Another time I tripped and fell into a pipe fence that knocked out my 4 top front teeth. I had to have special dentist visit to make it better. They were baby teeth but the others took a really long time to grow in. So I looked like a vampire for a while.

You know what? I think what happened to you might be able to explain why I can't stand heat either. I live in a state that birders Canada, so far up north, but I still can't stand the weather 9 months out of the year, and two months of the year, I can barely go outside. Something like that might have happened to me a really long time ago, but I might just not remember.

I had a bad experience with water many many years ago and as a result of that, the rain burgers me just as much as the heat. If there's a light drizzle, I will probably just end up flinching a lot because the rain bothers me so much now because of it.

Not me per se, but my sister has. When she was a 1 year or 2 old, old enough to be walking, she decided to jump from the second lowest stair in our house. But she messed up badly, and landed teeth-first on our coffee table. It shoved her then developing front teeth back into her gums. From then on, she sometimes chews on things because her teeth hurt, and she had to undergo a surgery. She's fine now, however.

We are a much more sickly group than I realized.

ghostfishy : Same here with the asthma, though I never really feel any effects of it anymore. I'm supposed to be careful but I never am, and thankfully it hasn't bothered me really in years. The only thing is I can lose my breath easily around certain things such as second hand smoke, I'll be talking and suddenly nothing is coming out anymore, it only lasts for a second but it's annoying. As if the smell didn't make the stuff off putting enough.

Zlinqx : Ouch to that ladder and bike both. I chipped a tooth on an apple once but...yeah nothing compared to that. As for the headache issue, hopefully that gets sorted out somehow soon.

MrBeingcool1 : Without going into too much detail, over the past few years I've began recalling some things that I had blocked off from my childhood as well, though not like yours. I can at least understand how difficult it can be as it nearly drove me mad (not literally, but I was messed up for a bit over it), I can't imagine how yours must have been. Good to hear you have a good stepdad now though, man.

Lexatom : I was never aware of the physical issue possibilities, but otherwise I'm fairly familiar with Aspergers as I have a friend with it. I respect you for not letting it hold you back.

EX Palen : Ouch. Well at least you can always sound cool by telling people you have an "old sports injury". Seriously though that's rough: both parts.

Mynamescox44 : I have back trouble too and have since I was a kid, but I have no idea why. The first time I remember it bothering me I was probably nine or so. I've never seen a doctor for it though. Your issue sounds much more painful however. Respect for pushing on through that pain, man.

m0ssb3rg935 : Ah yes, never go to the doctor even when you need to... I'm the same way, and so is my mom (I probably get it from her). I can't exactly say anything since it'd be hypocritical of me, but I know it ended up messing mom up really badly. I won't go into all that here though. But yeah man, you should quit climbing trees because you're proof that it's dangerous. Don't quit gaming though, even if your wrist gives out. That would just be crazy talk.

GamingN00B : Dude! Ouch, just...ouch. That was almost painful to read even. Did the doctor not say anything about damages to your skull or nerves or anything?

tornadocam : Man you've had a rough go of it. I guess the surgeries were necessary and all, but they sure did leave their marks. :/ Thank God He's kept you though.

Eniitan : Ow. Did it at least help your ear then? Sounds really rough. :/

Kilian : Gah! That teeth story! I literally started holding my tongue over my front teeth when I read that it was so rough.

zanderlex : It's possible. Also sun intolerance can be a genetic issue as well. For example, Irish can't stand it (so double whammy for me).

As for the rain, that's tough man. Hopefully you live in a dry climate.

Mega Mewtwo X : All the painful teeth stories! Man that must have hurt bad! Did they have to remove them?

Eirinn : Yeah some how. Sadly the surgery wasn't...a success since something happened. I'll explain when my first ear came to be like. It was really tiny. But I started to have bad visions meaning I needed to wear glasses now this became a problem because my left side of my ear was really really tiny. So the glasses didn't sit down properly as it would and kept sliding  down. The doc had a solution to make a ear out of my left deaf one to see if any help would do it. It did but the ear is rather shaped odd or more like the outside part of the ear didn't sit as it should and started to sink in. And that's the story. '-'

Eirinn : Luckily I live literally right above the dentist (same apartment building). So it didn't take long to have it fixed and there's been no problems since then. The perks of living in a big city. Anyway yeah I hope I can get the eye situation sorted out some time this year just been a lot of other stuff going on that's made it kind of hard to do.

Eh, I always thought that it could have been a bit about my family, because of where they are from, one side of my family is from a really cold country, but I never noticed either of them having any problem with the heat, it was always just me. I really should have asked them back in the day if either they did in fact have intolerance as well or if something happened to me involving the sun to me when I was young. Eh, I can't stand dry either because if it's dry, then it's most likely hot, so as you can see, I'm in a pickle here.

At least when I'm safely tucked away from the rain, the rain can cool things down.

Eirinn : I don't think they removed them per se, I think they simply pulled them out enough so that they'd grow normally.
