While not entirely harmful, it is indeed disheartening for many, especially when racial slurs are involved. We are taught to be mindful and respectful, and in doing so, are prohibited from swearing. However, people might break that rule when they get incredibly irritated or just disapprove of something.  I don't swear, as I am disgusted with the uttering of those words, and I strongly dislike those who use strong language in my vicinity mockingly. The amount of times I've been called a N@#$% and either "gay" or a motherf@#$%^ to follow it is sickening. I ask because I am curious to know just what you think of using Profanity.

Note: did you know that words like "duh" and "lame" are offensive and not advisable? (Duh is
used to express actual or feigned ignorance or stupidity, while Lame either means you're unable to walk normally because of an injury or illness affecting the leg or foot or not smart or impressive). See this article to understand what I mean.  Also, I am aware that people might swear to relieve stress or frustration. Or find a way to verbally express their compressed emotions. I am just asking what you think about swearing. Nothing more, nothing less. (Formerly, I said profanity was the bane of "our" existence. After one too many criticisms, I changed it to "my". Please understand. That was my mistake. I'm sorry). Also, I don't have anything against those that gain pleasure from this or use it occasionally in their everyday lives. I only have a problem when it's too frequent, rude, and directed towards me. Swearing is only mildly okay when used in a less-than-serious way and not offending anybody. I just want to know how often you swear. That's it, people.

Do you occasionally swear or not? What's your opinion on it? Thanks for joining.

I actually don't swear, but I don't find it to be morally wrong except in the cases of: tearing down others and when it makes the people around you uncomfortable. Still, it's easier for me to just not swear at all than to have to worry about the situation and the company I'm in before deciding whether it's acceptable or not. Also I think it gives a more professional and mature impression to others if you don't swear.

And on the topic of attacking others with swears/slurs, I'd say that attacking others with words of any kind is just as bad, whether those words are on the "swear list" or not.

But... since surprisingly a lot of swearing *isn't* used to directly insult people, I'm rarely bothered by other people swearing at this point. Just don't do it around my mom. That'd be awkward.

Online it's pretty rare for me to swear, and I of course don't do it while talking to anyone on vizzed unless it's someone I've talked a ton to in private and doesn't really seem to mind (doesn't mean I do it regularly though). In real life though? Yeah I swear all the time when around friends or sometimes around family. I've managed to tone it down a little bit because I used to do it even more but I still do it all the time.

I don't really think swearing is as bad as some people make it out to be as long as you're not using swears to insult people. They are just words, the only thing that matters to me is what you mean by them. Of course if you're doing it literally every sentence it will get annoying. I mostly just use it to express frustration or surprise, somewhat depends on the people I'm around.

Of course there are times where it probably wouldn't be fitting because the impression some people get of you and in that case I'll refrain from doing so. Out of respect for those people and for my own sake such as when around teachers.

Well, I don't swear very often on vizzed (although like zlinqx I do swear to people when I have talked to them a lot or know that they don't mind.)

Irl i do it all the time, I swear maybe a bit too often, idk, I mostly do it around friends. In fact i'm in a skype conversation with a friend right now and there have been a lot of swear words said by me already.

I don't think its immoral or anything like that, but maybe I should tone it down a bit.

Ultrajeff : I don't know about swearing and profanity being the bane of our existence. I would go with something like 'genocide' or 'human trafficking' or 'war' as the bane of our existence.

I rarely swear but I do on occasion to make a point or to bring attention to an idea or a thought. Usually it's used tongue-in-cheek to show my feelings or how ridiculous something is.

Profanity is used by people who aren't smart enough or creative enough to come up with the right words. I think it is a part of ignorance and a lack of education and vocabulary. Some people use profanity is used as fillers, like "um" or "like" when people talk. But they just make themselves look bad. It's not impressive.

I realize there is power in words, especially racially-charged words, but people need to respect others. Don't swear. It makes you sound dumb.

I actually don't find anything wrong in swearing, unless of course you're directing said swear at someone. Obviously certain words are never okay, such as the n-word and heck I'd even say the f word used for gay people is not okay. But throwing out other words? Yeah no I find no problems in them and in fact I tend to do it a lot. Honestly, to me it's not the word itself as bad, it's what you're meaning when you say them, which is why I say it's not okay to direct swears at people or even to say certain words.

In terms of me. I swear. A lot. Only in real life though. Never on the internet because my years children site like Neopets has conditioned me to watch what I say online. Maybe I should cut back because it does look uncouth to swear like a sailor, but I find that in certain cases they can really enhance sentences.

Yes, a lot, but not put loud a lot though. I usually only swear out with my friends so its maybe a couple dozen times a week. Other than that its all quiet. I would say its ok as long as you're not actually swearing at someone and to hurt them.

I think the only place I swear very much at all is in the car when I'm driving (alone). Other than that I don't. I have young kids though so I don't want them picking up the words quite yet. I know I can't keep them from hearing and repeating the words forever but I think 7 is a bit young for swearing.

I personally dislike swearing though. I can't stand people who swear all the time like it is nothing. It almost becomes meaningless drivel after a while. I also feel like it is lazy speech. If all of the words you use to express yourself have to be associated with swearing then you probably don't have a diverse vocabulary to draw from.

Yes,I do. I try not to cuss in public or around ladies or kids, but I do swear in my car a lot. I do swear online a lot,but it is because it is for adults. I try to watch my mouth or fingers (haha) on here, because I do enjoy it here, and I do not wish to be banned.

Yes, I swear. It's a problem. :v

I don't see anything wrong with it as long as you swear around the right people, such as close friends. If they're ok with me swearing, then most likely I'm going to swear. Most of the time it's out of sarcasm, but whenever I'm angry it's toward serious topics (such as the issue with my dad).

"Profanity is the bane of our existence"

That's a bit much man :/. Maybe dial it down.

I do swear a fair amount. Granted I only swear among friends, never with family or with strangers.

In the end it's just words. If it's the meaning behind the words that offends you then why is the "f word" not acceptable and hate is? The meaning behind hate actually has malice towards it whereas the latter is just a synonym for sex.

I use it because it gives more impact in comedy and such. It's the reason comedians swear. It just pack more of a punch when delivering lines.

I don't do it excessively just a few slurs in a conversation. I find it ridiculous when people claim by swearing you can't have intelligent conversation.

Words are only as offensive as you want them to be.

I don't use swear words in person at all, and usually extremely infrequently on the Internet. The exception to the rule is if I'm quoting someone, and it's very, very limited in that context as well. On the other hand, I substitute words that sound similar, so I guess there's really no difference if the meaning's the same... Also, just because I don't use them doesn't mean I don't think them, either. My friends, family and neighbors are all very..... colorful people, and growing up around it, it's nearly impossible to not have it cross your mind. In the end, I don't think that swearing is really bad, it's just using crude synonyms for less harsh words to get the point across. It's really just a matter of tact.

Also, it's really hard to pull off a monologue, one liner or punch line without swearing to give it an extra kick. Unless you're Scottish. You can say anything with a Scottish accent and make it funny.

Oh man. Do I.
It's actually kind of ridiculous how profane I can get in typical conversation.
You won't see any of that on vizzed, mostly because of the whole ban thing.
But if that weren't the case, my god, I would be having some fun at everyone's expense.

But if that weren't the case, my god, I would be having some fun at everyone's expense.

It depends on the situation.

If I'm around relatives, at school, etc. I usually try my best to keep my mouth as clean as possible.

When I'm in my room alone talking to myself, talking to online friends then I swear, but not very frequently. At least I think so.

"Profanity is the bane of our existence". That is partly sarcasm. What I meant to say is that profanity is the bane of my existence (I changed the post to reflect that). Also, words have lots of meaning, especially on the internet, I truly don't like being called a N@#$%^ constantly. I also despised working at Just Energy a week ago; My supervisor Douglas and his friends constantly swore around me, talking about vulgar subjects with strong use of the F@#$ word and so on. It disturbs me so. I take swearing very seriously.  So much so that I have never swore for at least 12 years. I actively despise it. You are free to swear to your friends and all, but I truly can't stand it. It throws my senses into disarray. Just a few months ago, someone, when referring to me and my brother, first called us "Butt-ugly". He then proceeded to call us "Gay-A@# MotherF@#$%^s". Sometime later, someone called me a "stupid N@#$%^". That is why I hate words like that. Despite that, my mother swears all the time. Thanks for listening. And don't forget; quoting me makes me feel uneasy and uncomfortable.

It's the bane of my existence, good friend (notice the change, man). I can't stand it. Because of some bad experiences I've had with it in the past and present, I actively despise the words and those who employ it against me.

You seem remarkably driven to clear up any misconception whatsoever.
