It finally happened. Even when I specifically prevented it from downloading updates and ran a tool specifically designed to erase everything Windows 10-related, it still kept on showing pop-ups about Windows 10 that can't be closed.

I was lucky enough to dodge the automatic upgrade bullet, though. I was at my computer, when a giant box pops up out of nowhere telling me that Windows 10 will be installed in one hour. Of course, I denied it, but can you imagine how angry I would've been if I hadn't been at my computer at that exact time?

What's your experience with this kind of thing? Has your machine tried to upgrade itself for no reason? Were you there to prevent it, or did your system end up with Windows 10 without your knowledge?

Happened to me, as well. My brother helped me keep it from happening. This actually reminded me of a project that's been going on for almost 18 years. I'm definitely going to have to post about it here, if I get permission. Microsoft is getting WAY to pushy. I think it's about time we did something about it.

I read somewhere that there is a registry edit that can be done to prevent the Windows 10 dialogue boxes from appearing on your system. If all else fails I'm glad I still have my Windows 7 box so I can always reinstall.

thunder90 : I torrented mine after the HDD failed because I never made a backup disc. I know it's not really kosher, but it helps... Let me know if you need to find a decent torrent. I can help with that.

Yup its super annoying. I managed to prevent it by going in to an update thing or whatever. It was like 1 minute away from updating.

I've used windows 10 before and I really didn't liked it. So i'm really happy i was able to prevent it.

It happened to me before on my window 8 desktop computer, this was like a few weeks ago. I don't like updates because most can take unnecessary space on m computer. And I kept seeing this to I kept denied  it. Then one day and it actually did this. It self upgraded itself to windows 10 and I was really annoyed. And I did what I can to get window 8 back. I can still barely use windows 8 and now it was trying to force me to use something I said I don't want to use? Luckily I got back windows 8 but it took sometime and it was quite annoying as well. :/

I've dodged it so far and recently installed Never10, so hopefully that one will work. I'm sure Windows 10 is fine, but I have a lot of obscure programs and drivers that I'm afraid will break, so I'd rather just be safe and stick with 8.1.

Thankfully, my computer has never bothered me about upgrading to Windows 10, and that's probably because it's not compatible with Windows 10. And if it really isn't compatible with Windows 10, then I'm super happy and very thankful, because I don't want to upgrade to Windows 10 whatsoever. I really don't understand why Microsoft is forcing people to upgrade to Windows 10. Thankfully, all of you found a way to prevent it from happening to your computer!

It didn't happen to me because I already had it installed from day one, but my dad's laptop kept trying to get him to update. He was going to update it, until we heard a few....Unsavory things about Windows 10 that made him change his mind.I haven't seen it pop up recently, but I'd bet it's probably been trying to install it in the background.

I've had it happen once on my laptop so far, but not my desktop. I restarted my laptop and it tried to push the update.

It's super annoying. Someone once said, "it can be the best product in the world, but if you keep pushing it people aren't going to want it".

It bugs me all the time about an upgrade,I just exit out of it. I look at it this way and this is for us all. I do not think vizzed has an update to work with windows 10,so we would all be screwed. And the reason I refuse to update are the security issues,(although I think they can be bypassed),and the fact that some programs or products will not work with windows 10 yet.

Since some time ago, the pop-up telling me to update to Windows 10 is not showing anymore. Probably it has to do with changing my antivirus, but the issue is now gone.

Still, the icon is on display on my desktop, hidden with other apps, so technically it isn't gone. I just hope it won't auto-update on its own, though I have come across some times where my comp over-ventilated quite heavily even when I had nothing running, which leads me to think it was doing something in the shadows.

I so want to get my new computer with 10 pre-installed so I can safely forget about all this. Windows should understand that if we install 10 and then de-install it something is not right, so insisting on the update is just an eyesore for us.

I upgraded to 10 from 8 and I'm happy I did. I did not like the way 8 functioned and 10 was an improvement on that. If I could go back to Window 7 I would be happy but given enough time 7 will become incompatible =/

Just a few days ago, I got a forced upgrade to windows 10. I decided to just get it out of the way and let it upgrade. It's been alright so far, though earlier tonight, I had some issues on the internet that I thought were related to the site. It turned out that something was up with windows 10 because when I got off the internet and got back on, it was back to normal.

Didn't have a problem with it. As soon as the upgrade was available I nabbed it for my desktop because I want that sweet, dank dx12. My Surface Pro stayed on 8.1 and never tried to upgrade, although I'm not foolish enough to leave a computer running while I'm not using it, so maybe that's why I didn't have a problem?

Wow. Microsoft is really pushing their dominance, eh?

I dodged it a while ago as seen in this thread:
https://www.vizzed.com/boards/thread.php?id=91419

I battled with win updates for about a month, deleting their folders by having to take ownership of them plus disabling the processes in task manager.

Thank you for your posts, everyone. It's interesting to hear about how many other people have been struggling with this, and how they got around it.

Here's something that makes my experience even dumber: I downloaded GWX Control Panel to stop this kind of thing from happening shortly after, and
I DIDN'T EVEN HAVE ANY WINDOWS 10 FILES TO INSTALL IN THE FIRST PLACE. You'd think they'd check that before trying to automatically "upgrade" your computer without your consent.

tRIUNE : Their "dominance" has potential to come crashing down. This was initially something I was saving for a thread of it's own. You may or may not already be familiar with it, but there's a project called ReactOS (for anyone else reading this, please, no Fine bros. jokes... it's gotten SO old...) Here's a link to both the Wikipedia article and their website.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ReactOS

https://www.reactos.org/

It's a completely from scratch rewrite of Windows that is, in theory, natively compatible with Windows software. This is not a Linux distribution or a standalone version of WINE, and has potential to be an incredible technological breakthrough. Not only is it open source freeware, allowing anyone from computer geeks to make their own user interfaces or "flavors" as different versions of Linux are referred to as, to companies wanting to have their own OS with proprietary security measures. There could even be a port for ARM based architectures, making the manufacture of computers less expensive and having the availability of a full desktop OS on micro PCs like the PINE A-64 or Raspberry Pi-3 and mobile phones. The only issue is that it pretty much doesn't work. In fact, there have been several people try to install it and it screwed up their existing Windows installation. If they had proper funding, they could hire full time developers and in little time, it could be just as, if not more developed than Linux. If this project ever got the attention it deserves, Microsoft wouldn't be pushing anything, they'd be begging.
