Recently, I received a message that's been bothering/disturbing me greatly. It kind of looked like this:

hey Yuna would it be ok for my friend to have the green jersey for just one day? no one is going to take the over all title from you all he wants is one day

I was going to post my response earlier, but decided that the recipient of this message would probably think I'm being insincere if I posted this during the TDV. Thus, I've posted it here now, where the person that messaged me out of the blue would be able to view it.

After having competed for the Green for several TDVs now, and seen the blood and tears (yes, blood, but it's not like you'd have any idea some people were actually hospitalized during the TDV) that were shed for this particular jersey with daily actions of over 400 in the past TDVs, I find myself unable to reply to this person I don't even know for fear of accidentally destroyinghurting someone's feelings. Thus, I'm posting this to clarify my stance on competing and competitions (both online and offline).

First off, please read/view the threads for the past TDVs to see how many actions were necessary in order to win one Green Jersey for the day. Please read/view the comments and the daily graphs by Davideo7 and then tell me if the competitors that put in such monumental efforts to obtain those Greens wouldn't be sorely disappointed if I actually agreed to help your friend cheat to get "just" one Green.

This may not apply to everyone, but I personally enjoy seeing people improve themselves over time, especially when they're up against something challenging and difficult. I understand that some people always like to take the easy way out in everything, but unfortunately, I don't happen to be one of those people. If I need to improve myself and figure out what will work best for the competitions I've made up my mind to join, I will, and I'm going to do my best to uphold the rules while I'm at it. I know some of you are probably laughing at my ideals and want to tell me that I've been obtaining points unfairly and whatnot with "easier actions" or "broken things" out of my control, but in my defense, I will tell you that the "1 minute apart" you've been seeing in my logs for a certain type of submission is most certainly NOT a coincidence. For this TDV, in the interests of obtaining some test results, I decided on a delay of around 1 minute before attempting to submit my data. This is not counting the time it takes me to do my research, record the data, and then actually submit the entries. If the category has a limit of 75 actions, what this amounts to is essentially 75 minutes of submission time, and more hours of research before that. You don't seriously think I would just pull submissions out of thin air, do you? To my knowledge, that's the fastest way to losing one's Staff position, not to mention it breaks the most basic rules of the Vizzed website and is grounds for being banned.

Also, asking me to simply stop making actions is like asking me to stop doing my Staff job. I've never felt any need to say it before because most of the Staff can see our monthly reports and already know that ever since I became a Staff member, I stood near if not at the top of the Monthly CP Ranking lists (especially during non-TDV months - yeah, who does that? lol) until about 2 months ago after the last TDV when I finally decided to take a break to keep myself from burning out. Then, gamerforlifeforever2 and a few other people took over and I haven't tried to get back to the top since (I mentioned at the time that I signed up for more real life work and I'm still busy now). However, just because I'm no longer trying to top the charts does not mean I'm not still doing my best to meet and exceed my Quota each month.

In all fairness though, you've probably never heard my history before (not very many people know after all) so you don't know why I was even competing for the Green Jersey, or why it seemed so effortless on my part. Then let's begin at the beginning, when I first joined Vizzed.

In brief, after joining Vizzed, I entered a screenshot competition and found that I enjoyed taking screenshots for Vizzed. When the first TDV came around, I didn't know about the White Banner so I didn't even try for it. However, I met my Staff mentor and began to learn about all of the jerseys from him. It's not exactly reflected in the TDV Hall of Fame but I followed him into the competitions several times just to see what the TDV was and what he was doing. This was before I became Site Staff. A friend later suggested I try to join the Staff as a Screenshot Adder so I applied and was actually accepted.

Spoiler:
Having thousands of screenshots on the résumé might have helped a bit in securing that position.
Then, more TDVs came around and in each one, I followed my mentor until I was finally able to join one with him before he became inactive. At some point, I also applied to become a Character Adder and this is where everything became controversial. If it isn't obvious to you, I did actively seek out all the roles I wanted to help Vizzed with after considering my personal strengths and weaknesses (90+wpm and a job that requires a love of writing), and the Staff kindly granted me those roles, which I'm still thankful for and appreciate to this day. I know full well that I can perform many actions very quickly with those roles (how else can I help Vizzed in the fastest way I possibly can, each and every day?). However, I didn't know one of the roles was somewhat broken until I was informed after the last TDV, so I went into all those TDVs with whatever I could bring to the table, basically screenshots and characters. My sole advantage with characters is... No, you couldn't guess it because you don't know me at all and you think it's easy for me to perform actions (why else would you have asked me to stop working?). Pretty much, I can fill in the data for more characters than the average user because I can search for/verify their information using various languages. However, can you guess at the amount of education I must have gone through to be able to do that? (Hint: Past college level.) But you thought you could just come out of the blue and randomly ask me to throw the Green... which is an insult to the competitors that came before me that also worked their rears off just to get one Green, not to mention it makes light of our abilities. Is it any wonder that I blinked after reading the first sentence and had to reread it several times just to be sure you were serious about asking me this question?

(As a side note, it irks me to no end to have to mention my achievements just so you would understand where I'm coming from. I hope the rest of the people on Vizzed that's reading this can understand that doing this is totally cramping my style. Given a choice, this wouldn't be the way I'd want to interact with you for the first time, either.)

Finally, and most importantly, I think you might have missed the memo about cheating or unfairly obtaining points during the TDV that is included in Davideo7's Main TDV Thread (yes, that very 1st post). If I had agreed to throw the Green just because you begged for it, I'd be considered party to your cheating during the TDV because I would essentially be helping that friend of yours cheat the system/gain points unfairly. (Again, where's the fun in doing something like that?) Although I'm mildly curious about who your friend is and whether or not they even know you asked on their behalf, I'll leave that question alone and make this your unofficial warning from a low-ranking Staff Member: Do not try to cheat and ask other people to assist you in cheating during the TDV. Ever. Again. Not only does it totally ruin the fun for everyone, I'm inclined to think that any self-respecting TDV competitor really wouldn't feel any sense of achievement if they received that kind of "help" anyways. This is why I'd like to think that your friend, if he was truly a worthy competitor, would have told you not to ask me such an insulting and pointless question.

In light of this matter, please also don't ever ask me to throw any matches again. It really is very insulting and wouldn't be fair to both myself and to the other people that have been competing with me all this time. (Come to think of it, I don't know who your friend is, but I know who my friends are. I'd sooner "give" the Green to my own friends than someone I don't know and haven't seen much of in the Green Jersey this competition. I know you certainly weren't talking about geeogree and gamerforlifeforever2 because I consider them my friends and can't imagine either of them trying to ask me to throw any matches, considering how sportsmanlike they've been trying to be all along. Also, to my understanding, geeogree could have easily completed 600+ actions per day if he so desired; he just didn't choose to, out of the kindness of his heart.) Just because I don't talk much about my own goals in the Forums doesn't mean I'm not watching the events or that I don't have my own plans. Whether or not I stay down on the charts for the day will be up to me and me alone, because really, that's what will allow my opponents to be able to respect me as well. If I decide to suddenly stop moving so someone else can try to get 7 points in a jersey I've been fighting for, then you can infer that that person has most likely earned my respect over the course of the competition, and I'm making the decision of my own accord to not make many actions for the day because I too would like to see him/her be rewarded for their overall efforts. (Keyword = efforts.) I'm sure they wouldn't want to have it any other way, either, if they were true competitors at heart. Every good competitor knows it's akin to a taunt/insult to someone else if you tell them ahead of time that you're going to let them win. That would also be no different from fixing a match.
Spoiler:
(Note that this is different from a situation in which your opponent comes up to you and tells you they're not going for a jersey for the day because they're busy with something else, because that's information they volunteered/wanted to share with you on their own, out of the kindness of their heart for whatever reason. It also does NOT mean the same thing as telling you they're letting you win; it's just them telling you they're sure they're not going to win.

I know it's a strange paradox, but only by NOT letting your opponent know you want to help them win will you achieve the desired effect of seeing them be happy that they won.
Spoiler:
You forced me to say this out loud, so now I'll never forgive you! Maybe.

Otherwise, if they win knowing you let them win, they'll never be truly satisfied with that win and over time, they might even begin to resent you for having "looked down on them." If you don't get that, you're going to have an extremely difficult time competing in anything, both online and in real life.

Spoiler:
And how do I know this? I guess this is where I should cite my personal experiences with chess tournaments, swim meets, tennis matches, spelling bees (ikr? srsly? XD ) and other competitions I've participated in/won in real life. There are no winners that enjoy matches where they don't have to work for their wins somehow. None. Because there's no sense of fulfillment/achievement at the end. No one will clap for them.

Contrary to what you probably think, competitors like us don't actually go behind the scenes to "fix" all the TDV places even before it begins (where's the fun in doing something like that?).
Spoiler:
Note that this is different from having each competitor share their goals. Just because we say we're working towards something doesn't necessarily mean that we'll be able to make it at the end. However, under a "fixed" system, each competitor will get whatever was decided upon beforehand, regardless of time or effort.
That totally goes against the spirit of ANY competition, in real life and online, and I would also suggest you not try to attempt such a thing without first learning who you are up against. In this case, it was obvious you came to me without knowing anything about me or my personality. It's an understatement to say I'd be extremely disappointed if you were actually not expecting to be rejected, and I'd be even more disappointed if your friend had actually put you up to this.

Did you know? If you actually hadn't asked on your friend's behalf, I might have considered helping him to get a Green for the day on my own. (Yes, I do have my guesses as to who he is; anyone that appears in the Green is bound to be noticed by those of us that are actually following/competing in a certain category.) You're right in saying that by that point, it wouldn't have affected my Overall standings much if I didn't compete for one day; however, because you came to me and suggested that I help your friend cheat, I had no choice but to silently refuse and run with the jersey until the end.

In the future, please consider your actions more carefully before you (accidentally?) make requests that may either be harmful to others or be considered unreasonable insults by the rest. You should count your blessings that you didn't tell me who your friend was and that I have no interest in pursuing the matter; naming him might have actually netted him a DQ.

Normally, I would ask to be pardoned for being so harsh with my words, but I truly feel I must make myself clear on this issue, in case something similar to this ever happens again.

Finally, if you dislike these TDV rules and you think Staff members are too "OP," don't just complain about what you perceive to be an "inequality." Read up on the TDV (don't get yourself DQed next time), get your act together (get good!), become a Staff member, and then try to ask for changes to be made to the rules. By that point though, you might actually realize, as a Staff Member, why these TDV rules are still in place. This is how things work in real life, too. For anything to change, you have to become the change you want to see, or the force behind it. However, before you think of trying to instigate anything to make those changes, make sure you're standing up for a good/the right cause and that your heart is in the right place. Two wrongs will never make a right, no matter how hard you try.

Just out of curiosity, how many other people would be disappointed/disheartened to receive a message like this during a competition like the TDV? Please feel free to reply below. I am genuinely curious what the people of Vizzed would have said/done in this situation, whether you would have thought the same way or decided on a completely different course of action. All opinions are welcome as long as you follow the rules of the Vizzed Forums (keep it family-friendly, play nice, no flaming, etc.). The person that sent me this message is also invited to reply however he/she wishes; I won't call you out on it, even if you decide to change your opinion when you reply to this post. Rest be assured, you'll be treated just like everyone else that would like to present their opinion in this thread.

To the Mods - I apologize if I posted this thread in the wrong place. Please feel free to move it and thank you, in advance, for all of your help!

P.S.: The entire time I was writing this, I was thinking about what Eirinn said, about how some people take the TDVs/competitions way too seriously. rofl XD Although I do partially agree with that, I can't help but wonder... if you aren't serious when you compete, then when should you get serious and why would you even bother joining at all? lol But anyways, I guess that's just the way I see things, nothing more.

I understand your point, and I do agree with you. People do take the competition too seriously.

I also see that you basically ignored what happened last TdV. It's a long story, so I won't post it here, but it ended up with you getting a special jersey because you were basically upset that you lost. I'm not trying to be rude, but it's honestly, just a game. This can go for all users.

I just finished reading your thread, and I found it very interesting. To be honest, I did request a competitor to let me win a blue jersey this past summer. I had a bunch of posts, and I asked him to let me win and he said he wasn't going for blue that day. I ended up losing anyways, lol. Karma bit me in the behind that time, and I have yet to win a jersey. I guess the moral is to not ask for things to be easy.

LunarDarkness2 : I'm not Yuna, and I'm not pretending to be her, but I think she was upset because David won by using actions that she wasn't allowed to do at the time, which gave her the idea that David was sorta laughing at her face that he won the green jersey. What ended up happening was that she didn't get the green; she gave it to David and David gave her a special banner as a sorry.

Anyways, I understand how you feel about the work you have to put in to get a green jersey. When I won it, it wasn't easy at all. I literally had to do actions every second I was allowed to be here, and I came out with a green, and a 7 pointer at that . If someone was like "HELP ME GET THE GREEN JERSEY OR ELSE" I'd probably ignore them :p. Not saying the person who PMed you that was like that, btw.

ZeroTails :

Yeah, that's what happened. I thought I summed it up without going into details pretty well. I will agree that that's one of the small problems green jersey has. They were going to be fixed for Spring TdV but with everything going on it ended up not happening.

LunarDarkness2 : I believe she lost that jersey because David did a bunch of actions that only a handful of people had permission to do and he did it on the last day which caused Yuna to lose the green jersey at the very last moment. I can understand her frustration over that. You would have flipped your lid if that had happened to you so don't stir s*** up by saying that Yuna is somehow a hypocrite in this situation.

Yuna1000 : there were multiple times during this competition that I wanted to ask you to let me have the win in green so I could get a 4 jersey win. I think I only managed to get the green jersey once or twice this entire month and you know what, I'm grateful you did that. I was more proud of getting points in green than I was in red or yellow because those were so easy to get. It was like once I got to a certain number of CP or words that people gave up and didn't even try.

I knew that even after doing 250 actions that you were going to show up later that day and beat me no matter how much I did. I knew if I wanted the win that I was going to have to actually work hard for it and I accepted that I was never going to get a jersey win in green if you were going for it because of how much work YOU put into it.

What I'm saying is that I agree with you. I think having people ask to win is making the competition not as enjoyable. Knowing that people were going to try to outwork me in order to get points was more interesting. By the time Mynamescox44 showed up I had the points I needed so I didn't fight for points with him but I knew in order to win more jerseys that it was going to be a real challenge. That is more satisfying than being given a win.

People take this competition quite seriously, though some do it a little too seriously. I will admit I did take it very seriously during my first time. Even resorting to breaking some rules unknowingly which I also myself for doing. So here is my standing on this, if a person has to resort to asking someone to let them win to win, then they shouldn't participate at all. That is just my opinion, sorry if it's a bit rude.

ZeroTails : And I'm not David, and I'm not pretending to be him, but I think he was upset because she complained all that much after being given extra chances due to some of her screenshots. David just didn't want his staff against him.

And if I were mod of this forum this would be closed.

I personally find this pointless and easily causing problems.

I don't even support your wearing of Green, but I won't discuss that.

People can ask you to let them win a jersey, and that's not cheating to let them, just not something you have to do, and shouldn't normally think about doing.

RDay13 : I wasn't really apart of that, I had a completely separate comment, I just liked lunar's post because I agreed.

And geeo, reminder about the cursing rule... And I don't feel like lunar was going for that kind of post to stir things up.

Again... why I said I would have closed this...

And why should someone who asked yuna to let someone win get heat? It's just asking them, there is NO problem with that, unless they start being annoying...

Wow, thank you, everyone, for all the replies! (I'm going to run out of Likes at this rate. D= ) I guess this could be considered my first controversial thread, so I'm glad to see people actually decided to read and respond to it.

For those of you that kind of went off-topic, here's the question again in a nutshell: What would you do if you received a message from someone asking you to throw a match and would it bother you? But I guess if you don't want to answer that and want to talk about something similar instead, that's fine too... ^^0

LunarDarkness2 : Hm... From what you said, I don't think you actually got my point, but oh well. XD Sorry to see that you interpreted the last TDV that way, even after reading through all the threads. Or maybe you didn't... Oh wait, maybe you weren't able to see everything. Oh well. =/ Anyways, thank you for taking the time to look at this thread.

RDay13 : Aww lol XD Don't worry, if you try enough times, you'll be able to get it eventually. (Yeah, people will figure out/realize you're trying for a jersey/banner.) But do you always compete during the summer? oO Because it might be easier to compete during other times of the year... ^^0 I mean, it's not against the rules to use some strategy to choose your battles after all.

ZeroTails : Congratulations again on winning a 7 point Green!! XD Those really are difficult to get, so I'll say congrats again now, even if you find that kind of strange. =P And no, the person that asked me was asking for their friend, and not quite like that, which shows that person is a good friend to their friend, I guess? Something like that. XD

No it would not bother me if I got a message from someone asking me to throw a match. That is only 1 day in the TdV, and I don't feel like that is a big thing to ask. I wouldn't do it for them, but I honestly wouldn't mind at all.

I'm sorry for causing more drama than necessary. I was actually trying to get the drama to stop, but I accidentally did the opposite. I apologize. I guess we can all agree that asking someone to let you win the green jersey is not as bad as making a re-reg and cussing out the only person who tried to help you

We prioritize the community over the site profits.  This is why we avoid using annoying (but high paying) ads like most other sites which include popups, obnoxious sounds and animations, malware, and other forms of intrusiveness.  We'll do our part to never resort to these types of ads, please do your part by helping support this site by adding Vizzed.com to your ad blocking whitelist.
