Local Mods : I hope I put this in the right forum if not please fix it. Some of you know but for those that do not. I have Autism. I have high functioning Autism. It was speculated I had it at age 4 but not officially diagnosed till I was age 23. Autism has its challenges I struggle with sensory and socialization. Yet despite these struggles. I earned 3 college degrees: Associates in Natural Science. Bachelor in Biological Science and Master in Student Life and Development. When I was only 4 or 5 I had professionals even a few educators that said I would not amount to anything. Yet I proved them wrong. I give God (for I am a Christian) credit my parents and awesome friends. I consider myself an Autism advocate and civil rights activists. Tomorrow is Autism Awareness day. throughout the month of April. Many organizations and charities will say light it up blue for Autism Speaks. Before you donate to Autism Speaks please think of us Autistic people when donating to Autism Speaks. Autism Speaks does not speak for us. In fact they have done a lot more to harm our population. Autism Speaks supports a cure for Autism. They think we are mentally off and need fixing and cured. As of 2015 not one person with Autism sets on their board of directors. But the most harmful thing they did was right after the Sandy Hook Tragedy. Autism Speaks ran an ad that stated "I can make your child full of rage. I can make your child non social. I can make your child turn into a violent person. I can make your child into a monster. My name is Autism. Please support Autism Speaks. This add lead to hate toward my population.Lot of us were judged as mentally off, the media called us monsters after that add. Autistic People who were employed many were fired. Also there were several incidents of violence and even killings after that ad. I even felt this hate. I had threats made against me. I lost friends, got hate mail. People asked me if I was going to snap and that I was a monster. But after that ad several countries passed laws that allows people with Autism to be euthanize. In some parts of the world we are seen as sub-human and monsters. The blue campaign by Autism Speaks is very hurtful toward us Autistics. And most of us do not like that organization. In fact we often state Autism Speaks does not speak for me. So before you donate to them or participate in their events. Ask yourself do I really support this organization for the harm they do to the community they are supposed to help. Another color that is popular for Autism awareness is Gold or yellow. Yellow stands for Autism acceptance. Me and other Autistic people don't want to be cured. We want to be accepted and seen as human and parts of society. This issue is close to my heart as it impacts me on a personal level. I believe that Autism Speaks has set rights we achieved in the 90's back. Thanks to them and media there is a lot of negative feelings toward us. If stats are correct 60% of us get fired. I myself have even been fired from a job long time ago though. 35% of us go to college as many colleges are hesitant to admit an Autistic student. 60% of police encounters end up in injury or death due to police forces thinking we are monsters. The great Martin Luther King had a dream. I too have a dream. My dream is that we will no longer be seen as monsters or subhuman, but a part of society. I have a dream were I hope more students who have Autism will go to college and break down barriers that I did. For any others out there who have Autism or know someone. There is hope. Not trying to tell anybody what to do. But since you know a little about me and what other Autistic people go through. Please think about who you donate too.
