I never really had too much trouble picking pokemon game versions before. However, when it came between choosing fire red and leaf green, well, let's just say it was quite a decision to make since I really wanted both games, but could only afford one. Please keep in mind that I was totally unaware of the differences at the time. So, how 'bout you guys?

Let's see, I have played a bunch of Pokémon games. Let me go in order:

First Pokémon game: I chose Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky instead of Time or Darkness. (At this time I was totally unaware that there were trainer-based games.)

After I learned about trainer-based games, I got a choice between Heart Gold and Soul Silver. I picked Heart Gold at the time because I liked Ho-oh more than Lugia.

The next game I got was Pearl. I got Pearl instead of Diamond or Platinum because Palkia is my favorite legendary. (In retrospect, I should have gotten Platinum, so I could have all 3.)

The next games I got were Fire Red and Emerald. I researched which Pokémon where available in which versions of the Kanto games, and I ended up picking Fire Red. I picked Emerald because it was newer and looked cooler than Ruby and Sapphire.

The last Pokémon game that I have bought in store was Pokémon White. Zekrom, in my opinion, is so much better than Reshiram. I think Reshiram's design looks a little better, but I like Zekrom's moveset way more.

Final Weapon : I was fortunate enough to be able to buy both not at the same time but I did own both games at one point but I ended up keeping Fire Red over Leaf Green because of my love of Charizard ... the only difference in the games was that a handful of pokemon were split into each game and not put in the other ... that is where it sort of ticked me off because the pokemon they messed with were some of my favorites in particular Meowth, Vulpix, and Growlithe got messed with and split up into the 2 different versions so I sort of hated that game line for going that on me even though they added onto the story by giving us the islands I didn't care because that didn't make up for what they had done ... it was supposed to be an upgraded remake of Red and Blue then fine use the same pokemon count like you did in Red and Blue and don't remove any to tick people off
... but I do get the reason behind this trick on us it is because they wanted us to buy both games so that we'd have all the missing pokemon from the other version and it has worked ever since then because I've always bought both versions of the later games from then on and I'm planning on buying both Sun and Moon when they are finally released this year

I never had a choice because whenever I went to the store looking for Pokemon Firered (a friend let me borrow it for a while and I loved it!) however when I got to the store they were sold out of Pokemon Firered and Leafgreen but had plenty of copies of Pokemon Sapphire. So guess which game I ended up buying that day? Pokemon Sapphire of course! It's not a problem anymore though because I get the opposite Pokemon game my friend gets. So I picked Pokemon Diamond over Pearl, Pokemon Black over White, Pokemon Black 2 over White 2, and Pokemon X over Y.

i had a slight problem picking games you see when I was younger I liked the color red so I had to choose between red version with charizard and blue version with one of my all time favorite pokemon blastoise. After a huge debate with myself I went with red but still choose squirtle XD moving on I played yellow with no problem what so ever then moved to gold and silver and I choose gold cause I liked the color gold then silver. After that I really stopped with pokemon cause I lost track of how many pokemon there is and it got wayy to crazy with the numbers and such. But I did play fire red and leaf green as well and went with fire red but other then that I really didn't have much of a problem except for the old original red and blue version.

If possible I usually just get the later version like Emerald, Platinum, etc. Though if I can't I usually choose whatever version seems cool.

18mlivingston : That actually seems like a good idea. I never really putted much thought into choosing the later games like emerald myself. Looking back it now, it probably would have been better for me to wait since in those games you can catch all three legendaries like groudon, kyogre, and rayquaza, etc.

Out of the games I physically own, I chose-
Fire Red
Ruby
Gold
Diamond
Platinum
Heart Gold
White
Black 2
X
Omega Ruby
I own/owned more than that, but these are the versions I like best.
Platinum is my favorite Pokemon game so it needed to be in here.

Never had those. But when I was a kid, I had Pokémon Red and my big brother had Pokémon Blue. So in this case I think I would choose Pokémon Leaf green. Logic? No.

I actually ended up being gifted Red and Blue at the same time, same with Gold and Silver so I never had to choose there. After that I 'chose' Emerald (AKA, played it on the emulator) and I also chose Platinum. When I was at a friend's and allowed to create my own game file on either Fire Red or Leafgreen I actually chose leafgreen because I like green more than red. Since then, I didn't get a choice on which Gen 5 game I played, and I still have yet to play any Gen 6 stuff.

Here are the versions I've chosen over the years:

Gen 1: Chose Red over Blue, also played Yellow.

Gen 2: Unfortunately didn't play that gen until I got on Vizzed.

Gen 3: Didn't play Ruby or Sapphire, played Emerald. Also chose FireRed over LeafGreen.

Gen 4: Chose Diamond over Pearl, also played Platinum. Also chose Heartgold over SoulSilver.

Gen 5: Chose Black and Black 2 over White and White 2

Gen 6: Chose Y over X originally, but eventually also picked up X. also chose Omega Ruby over Alpha Sapphire.

Gen 7: Will be choosing Moon over Sun.

Some Pokemon in LeafGreen has one of my favorite Pokemon in it. But my first choice was Pokemon FireRed because it had Red's name on it. Hahaha! Pokemon FireRed was a good choice for me, since my starter was a Charmander. Man, I miss that little thing, but I've grown to respect my choice because talking about it made me think about how I captured Mewtwo, a Masterball! Oh, yeah!

Well I first started out with pokemon yellow to be honest. There I got to the point I did have to choose some pokemon games, but can't remember what sadly. I'm sure for fire red and leaf green. I played leafgreen instead of fire red. I dunno the cover for the game didn't draw me in but, leaf green did. I remember not playing fire red for years until one point I did. Then when it came to emerald and others I got to play both emerald, and ruby. This was when my brother had downloaded the games somehow onto my computer and stuff. When it comes to choosing pokemon games that, were similar to each other it was just so....hard. Whereas on vizzed you can just say ok I play this pokemon game, and when I finish it I'll play this version. Since its so much easier that way.

Well, I would always just pick whatever color I liked more between the two. I haven't played anything past Gen 3 though, excluding hacks. Guess I'll go in order since that seems to be the trend here

-Chose Red over Blue. Just liked the color Red better. Also played yellow since at the time the fact Pikachu actually followed you around was super awesome to me ^^

-Chose Silver over Gold. Silver is by far my favorite color, so no chance of me getting Gold. Also got Crystal, since I like to see the subtle differences implemented into the 3rd title of every Gen.

-Chose Ruby over Sapphire. Again, I just liked the color red more. If I had to pick between the actual gem stones, I'd pick Sapphire lol. Never did get a chance to play Emerald. Maybe I should do that here?

Anyways, those are my choices, and I don't regret a thing XP

I have only gotten to play the first two gens. But out of them I would definitely have to say that I pick Blue and Gold. I have no reason why, but the box art was my favorite and I found those games to be more enjoyable lol.

Oh boy, this is a good question. Everyone seems to have a preference for different reasons.

I normally pick my games by the cover art. AKA, the legendary pokemon I would get later. I do this because some legendaries aren't as appealing to me. I can't say I've gotten all these games, But I will go in order as to what I would prefer out of them all

I would pick Red over Blue (I have played red on this site, and will always pick Red for charmander)
I would pick Silver over Gold (Lugia will always be better i have owned SoulSilver and wouldn't mind picking the original Silver over gold)
I have evanly pick Sapphire and Ruby (This is a little different. I picked the Sapphire GBA game, and I'm still working on it. And I pick OR on the 3ds to oppose my Sapphire game)
I would pick Pearl over Diamond (Palkia is my favorite legendary. No questions asked)
I would pick Black over White and White 2 over Black 2 (I get the whole point to the 2nd game was so you could get bother, but I liked Reshiram a lot better than Zekrom)
I would pick X over Y (Yvental reminded me of Lugia too much and felt unoriginal)

I don't remember what the new one is, But I think I would pick the Sun one, again, because I like the legendary. And it's ironic that I end up picking the one where I would rather the exclusive pokemon on the other game

I choose the other version of Pokemon because my favorites are usually there. For example I'd play Blue rather than Red (I prefer Victreebel over Vileplume), and I'd rather buy the special edition game instead of the normal versions. For example I'd rather get Platinum rather than Diamond and Pearl for improved gameplay, better and new features, more Pokemon etc... I miss the special editions games

I honestly choose based on the cover color.  I like warm colors and find myself drawn to them, so I usually pick titles with warm colors. I have Fire Red, Pokemon Y, and I used to have a copy of Ruby but I lost it, though I'm going to buy a copy of Omega Ruby sometime. I have a copy of Emerald but it was given to me by a friend, as well as a copy of Diamond that I got for Christmas one year. I plan on getting Pokemon Sun when it comes out, it especially looks nice. For titles like Black/White, and Black2/White2 I'd probably just pick which ever.

In 1997 a Young boy living in the North side of Seattle Washington was introduced to Pokemon at the age of 3.
