I would like to point out that some of the reasons are ridiculous.
some hate him because of that whole "princess in another castle" thing,but its not toad's fault,it's Bowser's fault.
others hate him because in the original super Mario bros, it looks like he is giving you the 8-bit middle finger.
that is just because of the graphics.

Um, a few things.

1. Most people who give those reasons are joking. It's the same way people say that the Duck Hunt Dog is the worst because he laughs at you. So what. There are far more annoying characters that aren't as enjoyable, and the regular people who say these things know that.
2. Specifically regarding the first reason you listed there, you know that "don't shoot the messenger" claim? Yeah, people tend to shoot the messenger anyway. Too bad, so sad.
3. My biggest reason for not liking Toad is his grating voice in the later games, actually. It's seriously an ear-sore most of the time, and easily his most annoying quality.
4. From what I know of the middle finger claim, this is purely mentioned as a joke. Anyone with even slight knowledge of technology knows that there are obvious limitations to the 8-bit systems.
   

For me toad is ok....but the 3rd listed one that SWTerra has said its true it really is an ear sore to your ears. And most of the time it happens and such. I don't hate toad but he is ok to me. I can understand why you are well not happy with this. Not everyone is not going to like what you love sadly....

I personally like toad.

He is my favorite character in smb2 and super Mario kart.



You are probably right about the princess in another castle thing though. People blame toad for bowser.

I don't see the hate with Toad. I love Toad, and he's one of my favorite characters of all time, in fact. I actually find the 'princess is in another castle' thing funny.  I never found him annoying in any way. I mean, it's like saying people hate Navi because of the "Hey! Look! Listen!" .

i also would like to point out that in my opinion toad is the main character of SMB2, because the game is about defeating nightmares,and toad happens to be a bit of a coward.

And yes, during the making of SMB2, Luigi didn't have that personality (it first appeared in the Super Mario Bros Super Show, of all things, and then later in Luigi's Mansion). But, neither did Toad. The most we knew at the time was what happened to the Toads of Mushroom Kingdom.

greenluigi : I personally really like Navi, actually, and never understood why that reasoning stands so seriously in place. I actually forgive them for abusing voice clips because at the time, it was a novelty to have voices with such clarity in video games. That generation was the first to have that consistently clear voice in it, not counting a couple of rather unknown or just busted examples beforehand.

What isn't acceptable is going out of your way to come in when we don't ask for your help, completely break the flow of the game, and tell us something we already know (I'm looking at you, Kaepora Gaebora and Fi). But that's a conversation for another time.

I never really cared about the "Princess is in another castle" thing either way. I mean, whatever. It was unnecessary, but I see no reason to be upset by it being there.

Toad is cool but he still owes me for that own goal he scored in the striker cup final against petey piranha. Other than that I tend to use him in mario kart a bit (besides my mii).

To be honest. I go with what van said I really like toad in Mario kart games especially the wii version he's more fun there than he is in super Mario games. There he will tend to annoy a lot of people, while I think some people would love toad in the super Mario games for reasons. I don't normally question why so it a sign that I respect their opinion based on that. '-'

I think most people hate Toad because of the sound of his voice in the cartoons. I never had much of an opinion of Toad. I thought he was a pretty good character in Super Mario Bros. 2 because he was the fastest.

The whole hating Toad thing has kind of become a meme with him being portrayed as annoying in parodies and such and people jumping on the bandwagon. As far as hating Toad as in the actual game I would guess it has to do with as people have mentioned his not so easy on the ears voice and that making him seem obnoxious which would probably the main reason people would dislike the character, and Toad being like the princess is in another castle at the end of each world in the original Super Mario Bros probably didn't help with his likability either, a lot of people becoming more frustrated with him than Bowser. It kind of depends on how easily the player gets annoyed though.

I really like Toad. In fact, I am a master at Captain Toad Treasure Tracker. And I also play him a lot in Mario Kart 8. He's great! Although I can see why people would mistake his amazing voice for something similar to running a cat through a cheese grater.

Although I hate to use this phrase...Guys, it's [the current year]. If people are seriously hating Toad for the one thing he does in Super Mario Bros 1, which is nearly 30 years ago now...You guys have some issues.

I really like Toad, mainly because he was so much fun to play as in Mario Bros Wii. 

The only actual reason I've heard as to why people hate Toad is his voice. I've never really thought of it as annoying though.

I think people only hate toad in the newer more modern mario themed games. In the older games like Super Mario 2 and Super Mario Kart, toad is awesome. I always played as Toad in SMB2 and either Toad or Yoshi in SMK

I like Toad. Toad is one of my favorite characters in the Mario franchise. I don't think he's annoying at all. Princess Peach is the annoying one instead, never able to escape Bowser's kidnapping actions. The only thing I dislike a little about Toad is his voice. Toad even got his own game, that means he's liked by a lot of fans. I think most hate for Toad are jokes, I actually find the phrase ''Thank you Mario! But our princess is in another castle!'' pretty funny.

Honestly, I love Toad. He's always been one of my favorite characters in the series. People say that his voice is terrible, but what about Princes Peach and Daisy (especially Daisy)? Their voices are far more annoying than Toad as far as I'm concerned. Sure I may have way preferred Toad's voice in Mario Kart 64, but his voice now isn't too bad as far as I'm concerned. Also he's still a blast to play as in Mario Kart games.

I don't hate him. In fact he's one of my favourite characters to play as in Mario Kart. Ever since I started playing it when I first played it on the GBA I think. I like him XD

I like toad though He's one of my favorite characters to play haha... I guess there is more people who like him than you thought. I honestly don't see anything wrong with his character.
