I haven't played a Zelda game since the very first one many years ago but when I was at the Gamestop today looking for some games on my list, my friend from work showed me all the Zelda games they had there and started to persuade me to get them. From everything he said while we were there, he made it sound like it was a lot better than I thought it was, but obviously I wouldn't be able to get all of them and I would want to make sure that I get the best one so of the games for the 3DS, which one would you recommend the most?

zanderlex : You should get Majora's Mask 3D. It's a fun, challenging, and cool Zelda game. It is addicting, as well. You have many different sidequests to complete, and lots of stuff to do. Must get game :3.

I would say either A link between worlds or the majoras mask remaster. They're both great games and I would say it really depends on what style of gameplay you'd prefer a 2d zelda game or 3d zelda. If you can't pick out of those styles of gameplay I would probably say a link between worlds first and foremost.

Now I know Ocarina of Time is extremely popular but I actually find it to a disappointing game, with a lacklust story and kind of repetetive gameplay, you may enjoy it but personally I'd advise against getting it.

I have to agree on the above Mentions. I have both "A Link Between Worlds" (A Direct Sequel to A Link to the Past on SNES)

and Majoras Mask 3D. Both are great titles. Obviously A Link Between Worlds is a brand new game and is great for fans of the SNES game. Majoras mask is just a great remaster of the N64 game with some enhancements. A much better remaster than Ocarina 3D.

You really can't miss with either game, but I suppose I would recommend A Link Between Worlds first especially for fans of 2D Zelda games.

Since you haven't played a Zelda game in a while I recommend LoZ: A Link Between Worlds the most of them all. Mainly because it is pretty similar to the very first one in the way of not talking too much and having much freedom.

It's kind of a Link to the Past remake but the game is strong in it's own right. It introduced some new characters, dungeons and of course the merge in the wall ability which is awesome. The graphics are really great considering this is made in a 2D style. The controls are comfortable easy and better than Ocarina of Time 3D's and Majora's Mask 3D's controls. The sounds are classic and are remakes of the original. This Zelda game has a lot of dungeons for you to explore, more than the most Zelda games. There is a lot that you can explore in both Hyrule and it's counterpart like collecting pieces of heart and the lost Maiamais. I think it is a great game for a beginner because it isn't that difficult but challenging in a good way.

I hope this helped you to decide which game to play. I find all the Zelda games for the 3DS great. More are coming soon as well!

I highly recommend "A Link Between Worlds".  If you've ever enjoyed a 2D Zelda, this is the best elements of many games and new elements combined to near perfection.  I've beaten it twice, and have started a third game recently.  It's semi-nonlinear, and opens up shortly after you beat the first few dungeons.  One dungeon cannot be completed until another specific dungeon has been completed, but the other 6 main dungeons can be completed in any order right after the initial dungeons have been completed.  There are certain recommended orders (and I followed one my first playthrough, if I remember right...but I like challenging myself to complete the game in a new way.  There are also a small number of glitches that may significantly improve your experience, if mastered.  Speedrunners use them to complete the game in as little as an hour and a half or so.  Of course, it took me much longer to complete the game, and I only utilized one glitch.  There is also one of the best fetch quests in the history of video gaming.  By finding "Maiamais", you can upgrade your equipment.  There are 100 to find, and to date, I've only managed about 70 to a file or so, if I remember right.  But it's so much fun, and a nice break from the action.  Many cannot be found without specific equipment or abilities.

That said, the 3D effects are great in this game (and although not necessary to complete the game, do enhance the experience), so if you ever plan on getting a 3DS, I recommend buying a physical copy.

Oh, and I might also recommend the GBC games: Link's Awakening DX, Oracle of Ages, and Oracle of Seasons.  They're relatively cheap on the eShop, and provide a lengthy adventure, and different experiences.  But above all, definitely ALBW.

Thanks for the replies. It's still a pretty hard choice, but it will probably be a while before I could get any of them.

Good Zelda games are in short supply. Sure they get high reviews in some places, but truth be told, they appeal to a pretty select audience.

Majora's Mask is pretty innovative as far as most games go. With three day repetition, and NPC's schedules to keep track of if you want to complete certain quests. It's fairly advanced even by today's standards. I wish more games would try something like this.

It's definitely for a younger audience. . . but like a lot of Japanese media aimed toward it. . . there are things in it, children just wouldn't get. I've been having tons of fun with it on my *new* 3Ds as of late. It's fun, and I actually wouldn't consider myself a Zelda fan because of how few games I can actually say I liked in the series. OOT and MM are the only real ones along with Zelda II, and then Twilight Princess- but TP only for it's graphics. There really isn't anything noteworthy at all about that game after the fact, save maybe the level design. Which is good really.

MM is like a small world that's so much bigger on the inside. You take a bite out of it, and you want more, and more, and more. Just know that you might have to wait a little bit before the game takes full effect on the enjoyment levels. It's halfway through, and at the end that the game really opens up.

A link between worlds may be the best Zelda game made yet. I've only heard about it, but I like what I've heard. Definitely check those two out. I used to be a big Zelda fan here, but now. . . not so much.

I think the series just. . . doesn't know what to do. :/

zanderlex : There's Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks for DS (although the latter I think is like $40 used), and Ocarina of Time 3D, Majora's Mask 3D, and A Link Between Worlds for 3DS, as well as games from previous consoles on the eShop.  There's also the Tingle games that shall not be named.  PH is a lot like Wind Waker: You ride in a boat in the game, and explore the open sea.  It's a bit repetitive at some points, but also very innovative.  I completed a lot of it, but never finished it.  Spirit Tracks has a railroad gimmick that is slow paced, but can be fun.  It got great reviews, but a lesser Metascore than PH.  OoT3D and MM3D are basically remakes of N64 games: They provide gyro controls and touch controls, I believe, and look quite good for remakes.  ALBW is a game designed specifically for 3DS.  It's akin to A Link to the Past, but is unique in many ways.  It's a 2D Zelda, meaning that it's "top-down".  It's the one that appealed to me the most, so I picked it up.

If you haven't played the orginal Majora's Mask and would like to finish that first before moving on to a newly made zelda world, then get Majora's Mask. If you've already played Majora before and would rather have a new Zelda world to explore this time around, get A Link Between Worlds. Seriously though, you'd most like buy both games anyway just like what I did It's just a matter of "which one to get first".

zanderlex :

While MM3D and LTPP I've heard overwelmingly positive things about, I hear the DS games can be shaky.

I don't believe I've heard of the DS titles being worth anything, but I'll summon someone who I know is good at analyzing games and telling you whether they're good or not. I know he's played at least one of them.

sonicthehedgehog57 :

Would you have anything to say about the DS Zelda games? I know you wrote a review on at least one of them.

Sword legion : Yeah I had done Spirit Tracks but I WOULD NOT recommend that game to anyone whom hasn't played Zelda in a while or didn't enjoy the more creative styles of Wind Waker or Twilight Princess (riding on a boat VS Wolf/Normal self). I'd definitely say though, if you're having a bit of a hard time coming back to the series then "A Link Between Worlds" is the PERFECT one for you....or if you're just a fan of A Link To The Past from before .

I also really loved my playthrough of Ocarina of Time 3D before I had to stop (circle pad broke) as I did enjoy some changes they made to the game, most notably the ability to change the camera where you can move it with the 3DS in certain situations which helps look over edges or around some corners better than how you would normally. I would say if you enjoy OOT on N64 then this game isn't a let down at all; HOWEVER, if you don't really care for OOT's style then DO NOT buy the game as it'll be a waste for you. (Same reasoning for Majora's Mask 3D so no need to go into detail all over again) Also like supernerd said below the GBC games would be an interesting try for you if you're interested. (look it up first of course)

____________
FINAL VERDICT:

Overall I'd honestly say that "A Link Between Worlds (ALBW)" is definitely your safest bet if you enjoy the original Zelda format with a few interesting new changes (the whole in depth and out-depth perception as well as 3D effect) and it's just a great follow up in general. If you enjoy the N64 games I would say they won't be a disappointment to you; but, it's not as good if you want something new obviously.

Sword legion : Yeah I had done Spirit Tracks but I WOULD NOT recommend that game to anyone whom hasn't played Zelda in a while or didn't enjoy the more creative styles of Wind Waker or Twilight Princess (riding on a boat VS Wolf/Normal self). sonicthehedgehog57 : All right, thanks. I guess all I need to do is save money, probably will get Between Worlds.
