So anybody that knows a little bit about me knows that I was a truck driver in the Army. Well, guess what? I got hired by Swift Transportation, one of the hardest trucking companies to get hired by, especially if you don't have any experience ( I have some, but mostly training. I was in Hawai'i, so I only did 2 or 3 "missions".  )

I am extremely excited for this opportunity, but if I said I wasn't scared, I'd be lying. The trucks are all manual. The trucks I trained on and drove in the military were automatics. Thankfully, I know how to drive stick ( the concept of it, at least ). I just don't have much experience with it. I like to drive cars in tip or slip-tronic if they have that feature; I just need a little practice with the down shifting.

Man, this is going to be strange. But it is so exciting.

I leave on December 8th-11th, I'll be back home from the 9th-10th, and then I will be heading down to Idaho for a month + however long for the training. I just hope I can bring my crap laptop and XBOX and whatnot so I am not bored when I am not training.

Congrats on getting this job. It must feel great that you got it despite how hard it is to get a job like the one you got.

I adore stick-shift vehicles. My first car was a 1996 Ford Ranger, which was stick shift. You'll adore it too, once you get more practice. Find a friend who has a stick shift and practice. You don't want to start off driving big-rigs without some practice, especially on uphills.

Congrats on your job man. Have fun driving them stick shifts, they are harder then they look lol. I'm still learning how to drive a stick, still sometimes have issues getting to first gear soo... got a lot of practice to do.

Good luck out there

I must confess that switching from automatic to manual will be an obstacle to overcome, but I'm sure you'll get used to it. Also, before I forget, congratulations, man

I can't overstate the importance of being at least somewhat experienced. Don't just be satisfied with being able to move, either. Throw a trailer on the back and take corners, start from a dead stop on an uphill with a trailer, etc. You need to be totally prepared for this job, to show them you're invested in doing the best you can. It'll go a long way.

thing1 : So, would you rather spend that time learning how to drive a stick shift, or learning about the truck and specific instructions? If they don't have to teach you how to drive, you'll have a headstart. You'll still get all that training, but it'll be worth the training. Also, the quicker you advance and better you are prepared, the better the opportunity for a raise or whatever.

thing1 : Congratulations on the new job bro! I'm sure that if you practice enough, then you'll get the hang of it. I practically taught myself how to drive a stick shift. I didn't need any help from anybody once I saw how it was done. If I can do it, than anybody can. XD

Good luck to you!

Wow, man good job on getting a job! If you want to learn stick but you don't want to always be in a car, manual transmission is on motorcycles also and I personally find motorcycles to be a lot more fun than cars and also easier to learn with especially since you use your hands for the clutch and throttle. Honestly a truck driver has been one of those jobs that I'd love to do, but I would be worried that I wouldn't be able to live off the pay since the general idea is that truckers don't get payed much. I've never looked into the pay, but I really like going new places that I've never been before and also visiting places I don't see every day but still see often. I also love driving even if it's on a long straight road with nothing on it, I just love being in the driver seat and keeping myself busy with the driving.

Barathemos : I don't think you understand both how important this job is to you/society, and also that some people actually enjoy this job. It would be like saying your job is humiliating, and then assuming that you don't have a job it makes it even worse. (unless you have the money) You will probably never see the things and have the experiences that a trucker has, whether they are good or bad.

Wait, are you driving Big Rigs for them? Don't those have a double, clutch? If so, that's a totally different situation than anything you would have experienced in a car.

That being said, I'm glad you found a great job. I know things have been hard on you ever since everything went down with the army. I'm glad it's looking up.

Jordanv78 : Yes, I will be driving "big rigs" for them. XD And I know it is different. I drove a giant truck in the Army. Granted, it was not stick. This would probably go a lot easier if Swift had automatics. I kind of hope they end up do having automatics. At least there is 5 or 6 weeks ( something like that ) of training. I already know how to drive a truck. I just have to learn how to do it driving stick.

oh man, I'm so happy that you finally got a job! I know that's been a pretty big struggle for you, so it's awesome that you no longer have to look! I've always thought I'd enjoy trucking if I was single... so you'll have to let me know your thoughts once you get into it.

I won't deny that I'd be worried about driving a manual though. haha!
