I mainly focus on offensive moves rather than defensive. However, there are times that I use stat raising moves a lot if my opponent has a status condition of some sort. For instance, everytime I send out my Xerneas, I immediately use Geomancy. It raises your stats to incredible levels, and I end up sweeping my opponents Pokemon with Xerneas.

When I battle competitively, I like to have balanced offensive teams. Usually two sweepers from both attacking spectrum as well as two walls from both defensive spectrum. Rotom Wash is a Pokémon that is on almost every team of mine. I like to incorporate the Volt Turn strategy into most of my teams.

I normally use powerful attack moves and elemental weaknesses to my advantage. But sometimes I have a Pokémon who has a paralysis or sleeping move on stand by if I'm capturing Pokémon or stalling for time to revive my other Pokémon.

I'm kind of fixated on having a balanced team. I always try to balance it out both type wise and in terms of offensive and defensive Pokemon, I like being able to do a little bit of everything and have several ways to approach things when going through the game. Though if it's a purely competitive team I might try building a team based more on certain mechanics.

I personally like to play with defensive combos.

For instance, I like sending out a weaker offensive Pokémon to set up the pace. If they send their ace-in-the-whole out right away, I like to use accuracy lowering moves. I tend to set up defenses and traps (Spikes, Light Screen, etc). After wearing the opponent down or letting them showcase what they have to offer, I like to switch to a quick heavy hitter like Gengar.

It all depends on the situation, but I do prefer to play defensive and keep my slugger on the bench until it's time to hit a home-run.
