I've been thinking about swear words and how its inappropriate to use them in public. They're just words right? I don't see why it's really that bad. If it's not the word and actually just the meaning behind the word why is it inappropriate to say f*ck and okay to talk about sex? Once again if that's the case why is it okay to say the word "hate" in public. It's treated as a word equal to dislike which is not necessarily the case and is a very strong word.

I'd like to know all your opinions on it.

I don't really like swearing words, and I never swear as it is a rude word. That's how I grew up to be like. You can't say to someone to stop swearing because it is rude. It is part of the human nature in this world so people do it. Though not many others don't swear, some people do. It is ok to do it out of expression. Or something, but to say it all the time it is just plan wrong and annoying. And coming form a person who doesn't like people swearing. There are some points that people would swear on, based on what he or she said.

I have absolutely nothing against swearing. In fact, I swear more than the average person. Now, do not get me wrong here. I do not use them as every other word in a sentence, but I use them frequently, regardless. There is no reason to harp on words, there are far worse things out there that people should be attacking/hating. People just need to be less uptight and relax a little bit. A few words never harmed anyone.

Whenever we say something we should think, "Does my language edify (build up) or harm (tear down) someone?"  If your language has the power of good intent behind it, it is good.  If your language has the intent to destroy or harm another or yourself, it is bad.  It's really that simple!

I cuss like a sailor where ever I am (not including Vizzed but we will get to that in a second). I have the right to say what ever I want to say and how ever I want to say it. I will use any word I feel fit. I would never try to stop someone else from saying what they want to say in a private conversation and if they try to stop me they will get a face full of doc martin. I choose to not use language that someone might find offencive because that is the rule of Vizzed and I CHOOSE to come here, I am not made to be here like life. If I didn't respect Vizzed I would just do what I do and not care but I do so I wont.

Some people take swearing in public more seriously probably because of kids even though they usually cuss themselves which is a bit ironic. But since pretty much every age cusses now a day why should they even try to bother stopping others from cussing? Personally I don't care for it and have cussed before and that was very annoying moment when I did and it just came out. Other than that you can hear cussing everywhere on the radio, TV, and possibly the friends of the parents or even they do. So if everyone had a right to say what they say to an extent cussing shouldn't be a problem but some just overreact way too much over little things.

I don't like using them in public, I would only ever use one when I am very upset of frustrated, and even then I don't like using them. Plus I only tend to use the minor ones anyway. I think it just makes people look unsophisticated and immature if they just use curse words left and right for no apparent reason in public. I don't find it to be that big of a deal if someone is expressing or conveying their emotions by using a curse word, but if they have no reason to do it, then it just looks bad in public. Most people have the common sense that is doesn't sound good in public, again, MOST people. I am not one for cursing a lot and that is why I seldom ever do it.

I usually don't swear out in public, but I usually do it in thought. I use it to express my anger, though I don't like using it out loud. I have no reason to say that loud that often. It just makes me feel bad, and I really don't like being too rude to people.

Me and swearing/cussing/cursing whatever you refer to it as? I admit it is apart of my vocabulary, although I seldom swear out loud around other people and never in front of my parents. They deserve more respect than that. If you swear because your angry or just bashed your toe on the chair leg I'm fine with that, studies show it actual helps to lessen the pain or whatever, I don't remember the specifics honestly so I could be wrong. If you use swears to 'sound cool' or to 'fit in' I think your a fricking idiot. There's no reason to swear in casual conversation or even in an argument, if your capable of being civil that is. If you use swears in every other sentence they start to lose to their meaning. Some words such as f*** are regarded as uncouth even if they your talking about the act, so to me their doubly harsh if used outside of original context. You can swear I wont hold that against you, lord knows I shouldn't judge you for that with how often I do, but I feel one should restrain it in public. Not because of the possibility of little ones overhearing but because I feel there's a certain level of disrespect to others when swears come out of ones mouth. It sounds bad, it's disrespectful, and it looks ridiculous if used with enough frequency.

TLDR: I'm fine with people swearing, I feel they shouldn't in public, I swear on occasion, and I think they should be used in proper context not every other sentence like people do.

I am a person who has no quarrels with swearing. Outside of Vizzed Board, I swear, but not that excessively. I see swearing as a way to spice up a sentence or idea, because their history as vulgar words can express ideas far beyond what a standard vocabulary can. They can also be used to add humor to a normally standard sentence, because people find swearing funny in certain situations. I do not curse to act like an adult or to rebel against what people say, or fit in to people who curse for the former reasons, I curse to liven up what could be a boring or uneventful conversation. When you look at it from this philosophy, it's actually not so bad. Of course, because Vizzed is a family friendly site where younger kids are not only allowed but welcomed with open arms, I respect other people's dislike of swearing, so I try to refrain from cursing unless I find a true need to, which is rare.

That is a good question.

To answer it, you can ask yourself this one.

"What happens when a person swears?"

Our minds and subconscious takes in lots of information and document it even without our conscious mind giving it's regards to the said input.

If you say words like the F-word, your mind documents it, and your mind is subtly put it the direction of what the F-word really means.

Consider this.

If you are in a room with white paint on the walls, you will probably feel fine in the room.

But, if you are in a room with black paint, then you may find yourself feeling a bit down.

Try a totally dark room, and a well lit room with tables and chairs.

I think that most of us would be in a room with plenty of light.

Now, let's change the experiment up a little bit.

Let's put you in a restaurant. The waiter comes up to you and offers you a menu, what would you like her to say more?

"Hi, what the *&%$ would you like to eat today?"

"Hello, what can I get you to eat?"

I think that most of us would prefer the second, and why not? It's only logical that we would keep our subconscious clean while we eat.

now, what if. . . the waiter just unloaded a TON of cuss words the whole time?

I would NOT want to eat there again.

It's pretty easy to see why people don't like Cursing. Pretty inconsiderate to curse in other people's presence if they take it offensive if you think about it.

Yes, people do generalize what words mean, but that does not totally remove the original word's meaning either. Actually, I find talking about sex, and even farting socially unacceptable for that reason as well. Our minds are nicer places to be without garbage put inside of it by other people's mouths. Now, I am not suggesting that you blame other people for your mind not being able to think right all the time, for we can close our ears off to others inappropriacy, (Please, no talk about sex while I'm eating mom and dad), However, we can, and should avoid putting poison in other people's mind, and we should be careful about the words that we use when people are eating and such.

I'm not sure if cursing is 100% wrong, but I think that it would be better to use more appropriate words for a situation than Disgusting exaggerations that give the subconscious terrible gross fuel.

Words themselves don't mean anything other than what we ascribe to it. The F word is just organized noise. The meaning behind it is why we don't say it in public. It's taboo. It's a swear word because people are offended by it. Therefore, don't say it around people that would be offended by it or if you don't know. It's fine around people you know will not take offense.

word are only words. if you get bent out of shape, offended, pissed off, or anything else when someone uses them, you need to grow up, and stop living in your kindergarten universe. regardless of what anyone says, to you or not, dont get offended. if you do, keep it to yourself. nobody cares. in some (most non rich areas) places, most people will happily curb stomp you for voicing your discontent on their choice in verbal communication.

i "swear" or "curse" constantly. it is a part of my speech patterns. it is a part of nearly every persons speech patterns in fact. when i KNOW youll be offended by certain words, i use them intentionally around you as often as possible. because you should have just kept your little mouth shut, and manned up.

how can you possibly find a natural bodily function, that every mammal has, socially unacceptable? what world do you live in?

I almost never swear. I don't like it. I totally agree with your point, though. I don't understand why some words are worse than others, but I still try to avoid swearing whenever I can.

I almost never swear (when others are around) just for the sole reason that it could offend some one. Whether it should depends on how sensitive the person(s) around, and the situation in general are.
***Edit: I would also like to point out that it doesn't matter what a single word
literally means, but as to what it's purpose is. There is a reason why calling someone a "dingleberry" is less offensive then calling them an "A-hole"...it's because "dingleberry" is percieved as more silly than threatening. Putting aside what every single swear word literally means, the context they are most commonly used in is anger or any other negative attitude. Because of this, it is wise not to use swear words at people, or sometimes around them because of what they mean in context and not what they mean by law of the dictionary.
My word of advice: Be sure you know who is around you and how you plan on swearing to prevent anyone feeling offended by your language. It's a simple lesson of being respectful to others

Swear words are just like other words. They've just been artificially assigned to this taboo platform because of Victorian sensibilities a few centuries ago. Basically... they are slang words that poor people used back in the 18th and 19th century.

The way the words are used, the context, is what is more important. I use the F-word and I am fine with other people using it around me. However, if you start shouting F- you at me, then yeah, I am going to take offense to that. When they are used against other people, as insults, is when I have issues with them. Same as any other words used as insults.

I swear like hell, and I have no problem with them. Al they are are words that are used to exclaim something, I mean, they add more to a phrase. If you get hit by a bullet, are you going to say "ow, that hurt!" Or are you going to say "sh*t!". I know that some people will say ow, but that is not what you would say. When something hurts badly, you are going to use words that show what you feel, and saying ow does not have the same affect. I enjoy the use of swear words as they make a conversation more interesting, and as you said, they are just words. You shouldn't be able to complain about words. They are only words, nothing really bad. Saying "let's have sex" does not have the same affect as "let's f***". They are just words, nothing to it.

I think swear words are only bad if they are used to offend people, but I almost never swear out loud. I do it all the time in my head, though. I can't stop myself from doing it. Some swear words used to be not bad, but they were made bad. For example, b**** used to just mean female dog, but now it means that and a few bad things.

I think they are part of a person. Granted, I should probably cut back on the amount of F bombs and D drops and H holes I use, but I believe that it is part of a person's personality.

Sure, people should watch their language it in public around other people, but if you are with your friends, then I think it is ok.
