So today and tomorrow the 8th graders at my school (my school is 7-12) have to participate in something called Challenge Day. NOTE: I am in 9th grade and did not get to participate. According to them, it was the worst experience of their lives. You start out the day fun, playing games and whatnot. Then you go into the gymnasium and play a game called "Cross the Line". Basically, how it works is the instructor says something, and you cross to the other side of the room if it applies to you. You are not allowed to talk.

The questions start out easy, telling you to cross if "You are male", "You are female", etc.

As you get further into it, the questions get deeper, more sensitive, and very depressing. Some of the questions are:

- In the past year you have been in a relationship and have been hurt.
- You have felt embarrassed about the economic state your family is in.
- You have taken primary responsibility for taking care of another family member.

Of course they throw in a few less-sensitive ones to break it up, such as "You consider yourself Republican". (I kind of wish I went just so I could proudly walk across the room for this one and back up my fellow Republicans). Then they get even deeper, with questions like:

- Your parents are divorced, have been separated, or were never married.
- At least one of your parents have died.
- You feel estranged or unconnected.
- There have been times where you wished you were a different ethnicity.
- You have a medical problem.
- You have a mental or physical disability.
- You have questioned your sexual orientation.
- You have experienced the effects of alcoholism in your family.
- You have experienced the effects of drug addiction in your family.
- You have had a sexual experience that you regret.
- You have considered committing suicide.

At this point, every single kid is crying. They end with "Cross the room right now if you need a hug."

To me, this is one of the worst ideas I have ever heard. All it does is make people feel like crap. It sounds more like a torture to me, like the school could get in some serious trouble for it. Schools have gotten in trouble for less. Also, all it does is give people new information about other people that they can use against that person. It is basically giving people new things to bully someone about.

What do you think?

Last year we played it and it ended up going into have you done drugs or still do drugs, have you ever watched porn. All that fun stuff

Keep in mind my class was grade 7 last year.

I feel like the whole "cross the line" thing could be a fun experience, if you play it only with friends, I guess. I have never actually tried it, but seeing as it was run by the school (which is never a good thing) it seems as if it was awful. I do not really understand why they felt the need to go into territory such as that, especially with eighth graders who are just beginning the life of a teenager, and are going through some serious emotional problems, and are still young enough to be easily broken. Maybe they could get in trouble for it, but I am not certain. I'm sure that at least someone has complained about it.

Whoever came up with those questions for that game must be pretty sadistic.

I mean, if I were participating in that game and it starts out as harmless, I would be angry to realize that it was getting more and more... inappropriate.

Hm, based on the grade levels, I'm assuming that most of the participants were ages 12-14. That's pretty cruel to have manipulated them into thinking that they were playing some creatively thought out game.

Well, one thing's for sure; it IS creative...

Then again, I've never heard of cross the line before. I wonder how long it's been done?

There's a website for this! Obviously some psychologist with a P.H.D. somewhere thought this thing up and sold it to the gov. I can think of a few possible reasons why our government would start a program like this.

  • They want to try and prevent kids from bringing a gun to school and blowing their classmates away.
  • They want to put everyone on a level playing field in an effort to curb bullying because everybody's got some kind of problem.
  • They want to make you feel like school is a place that you can be yourself.

It seems to me that every one of these things has the potential to backfire with this kind of openness. Oh well, perhaps they won't lose too many lab rats with this social experiment. OH LOOK tgags, that website says they have "NEW Graduation Day Challenges"! (You aren't out of the woods yet, dude.)

My god what kind of horrible game is this? As you pointed out, the only thing I can see people getting out of this game is more humiliation and a lot more reasons for other people to make fun of them. Thankfully I have never played this game before, they should really try to make it less personal and try and make it open, but fun, like have you ever done ____ and if it applies to you then you move up...still pretty lame I know, but at least it doesn't make people feel horrible about themselves.

This game sounds utterly terrible and I think you guys should've been able to do something fun like dodgeball or ANYTHING else....

I think they really crossed the line with this.

OK, seriously, it's a terrible idea!  Questions like that should be reserved for a private, more appropriate setting!  Like thephantombrain said, the gov is probably trying to do this for several reasons, but to force kids to do this?  That's a form of bullying, too.  Children may not wanna lie, but don't want their pasts dredged up for important reasons.  I can imagine bullies paying attention during these games to other players so that they can figure out their weaknesses, how to get to them.  Many don't care whether they get expelled or not, as long as they can pull off something big that hurts someone.

I would leave that school, or at least threaten to blog about it. But seriously, this could be emotionally scarring for a student, especially if they are one of the only to step forward on one of them. That really should be illegal.

Maybe it was a school survey or something to see stuff about their kids. From what I think it just has to be or this is the most messed up person I have ever heard of.
