Yep, I'm going to Haiti for 8 days! I'll leave on the 28th of Feb, and come back on the 8th of March. I'm going as part of a missions trip with my church. While we're down there, we plan to do various things. This will include, but not be limited to, the following: Visiting the sick (too sick to get out of bed), helping a micro-business our church recently helped to start, my dad will be preaching on Sunday morning, we'll chat with the pastor and deacons about various issues, etc. There's going to be a lot of other stuff going on as well, including spending a day with the youth.

Where will we be? We'll fly to Port-Au-Prince, the capitol city of Haiti. After that, we'll take a bus ride to the city of Baraderes, Haiti. This is where we will spend most of our time. We'll also visit a small town, a few miles away. I don't remember the name of this town, tho. lol

I'm really really excited about this trip! We'll be EXTREMELY busy, but I know God is going to do something amazing with this time! The leader of our team has been going down there almost annually since about 1980, and even he said that this is an ambitious schedule. Still, I'm really looking forward to it!

I bet you'll be awesome out there.  You are awesome and know how to be a friend.  A friend is the best missionary.    Just be careful that you don't try to be overbearing or condemning of the Haitians.  It's so tempting sometimes to condemn those who have a different lifestyle.  I've done that many times to my parents and brother, with bad results.  Just be their friend, and everything will be awesome

BTW, I read this as "Going to Hell for 8 days!!" at first, thinking it was the title of a movie or something.  Then I realized it was from you and reread it.  I'm glad you aren't going to heck for 8 days

Awesome! That sounds like it will be an awesome trip. I hope you have fun! Stay safe though too. And, as supernerd said, be nice to the people down there. But I know you'll have no issues with that. 

I heard Haiti is a nice place to visit, But I don't like bugs, but the food will probably be good and the view just sitting down chilling at the beach and I also like Chocolate!!!!!!!!! So good.

It always kills me how often people want threads closed or moved or edited or whatever.

Anyway, Mrfe, I was in Haiti with the Marines many years ago.  Don't drink the water, make sure you're safely disposing of toilet wastes, keep your head down and watch out for stray bullets, don't buy anything from the kids running around and never, ever give money to beggars.  Do your job, stay in your specific area, don't wander around and stay safe.

The guy who said Haiti is nice to visit has probably never been there.  It's a hole, they are insanely poor and have nothing, and there is a certain desperate mentality that leads people to make a lot of bad decisions.  You're going because they absolutely need help.  It is no paradise and if you feel happy and comfortable where you stay, you guys aren't helping the people that need it the most.

lastly, watch out for Haitian state police and federal security officers.  They're really bad news.

dvkbuddy10623 : Actually, 8 days is still a comparably short amount of time for a missions trip. It's considered a 'short-term missions trip', as compared to people who go for months or even years. Still, our time down there will be quite busy.

Our team has had 10 meetings, where we're discussing the culture and how to behave and that kind of stuff (one member has been going to Haiti for close to 30 years now), so I've got a pretty good idea of what to do and what not to do. lol. I still definitely see what you're saying tho, and I totally agree!

A user of this : Thanks man! I don't plan on dying, but coming back with all my limbs would be a plus too. So far, though, no one has gotten hurt when visiting Haiti from our church. This is good news for me! XD

jmurphy1318 : While our primary objective doesn't involve hitting the beach, I've heard that we might spend a little time there while we're down there. Apparently we'll have a day of recuperation while in Haiti still, while RMI (the mission organization we're going with) debriefs us and such. I'm looking forward to it!

warmaker : RMI is going to be taking clean water down for us, as well as providing translators who are well equipped with cultural knowledge and such. We should be fine, but thanks for the heads up! Where we're going is a fairly peaceful place, I haven't heard of any political unrest or violence in the town we'll be visiting. The worst I've heard of is local's proposing. lol! I definitely agree tho, the poverty and despair there will be heart-breaking. I've talked to people who've gone before, and it's been life-changing to every one of them.
