This thread idea came to me when I was responding to a thread titled "what are you afraid of", and a plethora of tragically unavoidable social situations came to mind.

One of the most common ones I have to deal with is getting on an elevator with just one other person, I can NEVER think of anything to say, so I usually just start pretending to text someone on my phone before the doors even open... It's still awkward though.

Maybe I'm just overly self-conscious, but I'm pretty sure I'm not alone in this, so does anyone else have an awkward social situation that they hate?

I also don't like it when I have to talk to new people I don't know, we mostly do this as activities in classes at the beginning of the year and it is kind of awkward and uncomfortable, but I guess it is their job to make us get to know each other even if we really don;t want to, and we probably won't end up talking to them ever again. 

That is the only thing that really bothers me, it is just a weird experience in my opinion. Especially when it is talking to people you don't know for the first time...So I try to avoid this with little to no avail.

Calling somebody by someone else's name, or thinking somebody is who they arent. For example, i once called my third grade teacher Mr. G "Auntie M", lol. It was so awkward. Or when you're in a public place, and you say "Hey, Mom!" And it isn't really your mom. Please tell me I'm not alone in this.

I used to have a friend, and there was this other girl who lived in our Apartment Complex that, from a distance, looked exactly like her. So I'd call my friends name and it'd turn out to be the other girl. 

Other than that, here's an awkward situation I've found myself in before: A little kid walked up to me and started to talk to me, and he didn't speak English. T.T He showed me a bouncy ball he'd just gotten out of a machine, and I pretended to be fascinated by it.

Also: when you're buying candy or a gumball out of a machine, and a little kid walks up to you and asks you for one. :/

Um.....to talk to people I don't know. And having to socialize with people I don't know sometimes. For instance going to a party...or being next to someone who only think, negative thoughts and noting else.....that can bring you down on how they say things....That's why when I go out I don't talk to anyone. And just bury myself into my music.

I just don't like talking to anyone or being near a single person at all, unless it's a close family member, a friend, or a teacher at school. I guess for me it would have to be parties. I am generally a more shy and introverted person than some, and I tend to be more of a person who avoids social contact, but I do enjoy talking to people. When it comes to parties though, I never know what to do or say, and it ends up horribly for me, I don't know if it's just me, but I can never seem to party "correctly".

I am rarely ever in this situation because I am just an open type of person. I can't say this never has happened though, that would ruin the fun. The only time I have this problem is when, I am at a girlfriends house, with her parents. Yes I honestly can't stand it. They always want you to eat the food, and have a drink of water, or coffee, or tea! Sometimes I just want to be left alone, I'm always scared I'll say something wrong! Or when you are at a table with the mom or father, and they just stare at you like you are a lost puppy. It's the worse!

In public I usually get very timid and quiet...as a result of very heavy shyness. So in a very generic stance I usually don't try to get in the center of attention for the very fear that I may say something or do something very embarrassing or stupid.
