I was watching college basketball last night and the WBC was going on as well.  Of sports not called "American football," which is most American?

Let's take it a step further.  Which other countries have a defined sport?

Brazil: soccer
Canada: hockey
Sweden: curling

Well in places like the carribean it would be cricket.
Ireland are big on shinty which is about as dangerous as sport can get.
New zealand have rugby which is my favourite sport, its only really big in western europe and some south american countrys though, which is weird since it was invented in the uk...
Football would be the main one for european countrys like the uk, which isnt surprising since thats where it originated.
I suppose for america, if you didnt say american football, you'd arrive at either baseball or basketball.
That would be based on them being played most in america though, since neither were actually invented there. I assume thats what you were going for though, since most countrys national sports werent invented there.

I'd say baseball is the 'most american' after the NFL, but that's only because of it's history as the main sport of the US. To me, it's NBA after the NFL.

I agree with everybody else... It would either be baseball or basketball. Baseball is considered "America's Past Time", so I am going to say baseball.

Baseball was played as an alternative form of cricket in england in the eighteenth century, and brought to america by the colonists. And ironically, the Americans took it to japan, which historically, apparently used to have a very similar sport.

thenumberone : yeah, I was not entirely sure about the history of baseball. Send me a link to your reference? And about the basketball issue... yes, the creator was Canadian, but it was invented and played originally in America, therefore, I think it can reasonably be considered American.

The NFL is the only sport that really is "exclusive" to the US. The only other sports that could possibly be the most popular in America are Basketball and Baseball. All the others don't come close to being "Americanized".

I'm not American so I don't know much about it.
But from what I do know from my relatives baseball would be the choice from what I can tell.
It goes back so many years, and holds so much history to America.

I'm not sure when basketball started up, but I think baseball holds a slight edge over it.

mlb789 : This claim actually isn't accurate. There's an NFL Europe, and there are actually camps that go on in Europe training players to play more often. Famous Saint Louis Rams quarterback Kurt Warner was undrafted out of college and went to the NFL Europe, where he excelled before coming back and leading the Rams (against my Titans!) to a Superbowl victory in 2000 and a return trip in 2001. He also took the Arizona Cardinals to a losing endeavor in 2009, where they lost against Ben Rothlesburger and the Pittsburg Steelers. There is also an influx of NFL-level talent coming in from Europe. Florida State has a defensive end from Germany who was one of the best defensive ends in 2012.

Not only that, but there is the CFL, the Canadian Football League. Granted, none of these stack up to the talent and the overall level of excellence that players in the NFL achieve, but it's important to recognize that it's not strictly limited to America.

In respect to the question posed by the topic creator, I would say that baseball is the most "American" sport in respect to its roots, but basketball is the most "American" in respect to the level of talent above the rest of the competition. Did anyone see the Olympics? Nobody came close to beating Lebron and company. That being said, there are many foreign players in the NBA that also played in the Olympics (Marc and Pao Gasol from Spain are the first ones that come to mind), but overall, the United States is most dominant in the world when it comes to basketball.

The sport that is most American besides football is basketball.

Easily baseball... hell, it's more American than Football IMO.

"Chicken" (game played with cars) comes to mind as well.

A sport that is most american than NFL is baseball or basketball , i believe thats all .

I think right after the nfl would be the MLB or the nba I know soccer would not be the most American nor hockey but I would put MLB a bit more American then nba for some odd reason.
