Modern HDTVs come in either 720p or 1080p resolutions... both are high definition, but the latter has more lines in is resolution. I've heard many people insist that they HAVE to have 1080p and won't settle for 720p... but here's the thing: I honestly can't see any difference in it on my TV. I want to know if anyone can even tell between the two at all or if 720p is so good that there's no point in even looking for 1080p.

I also noticed that all of my PS3 games (except for one) only go up to 720p anyway. It doesn't seem like the 1080 resolution has much in the way of value. Anyone see it differently?

I should also note that my TV is only 32-inch. Maybe there literally IS no discernible difference at that size because there isn't enough height on the screen to stretch out 720 horizontal lines. It's possible that you don't get any spacing until you get to like 50-inch or larger.

Anyone have any experience with this?

I can tell the difference between 1080 and 720 most of the time. It's probably because I have a 720 TV (I think) and my friend has a 1080 TV.

Note, it's only most of the time. Sometimes I'm genuinely stumped myself, and I need to have someone point out the lack of quality.

It's not a big deal to me anyway. I mostly use my TV for playing the PS3, and I don't need a 1080p TV like you said. Even if I could play them in 1080p, 720p does the job more than well enough.

I wouldn't be able to tell, unless I did a side-by-side test, or if I always watched stuff on 1080p, and then after a week, switched to 720p.

I can't tell since the only thing I use TV for anymore is video games and most of those (none of the ones that I play) support above 720p anyhow.

1080p is made of a lot of pixels. Both are in very good quality so some people can't tell the difference.

It depends on the size of the television in question, and how far away you sit from it. A 27" TV in a normal living room will look fine at 720p, but a 60" monster being used as your computer screen won't even look good at 1080p. Most people who say they can tell the difference really can't, they just get up and have to be sticklers about it. If you're standing right in front of the screen, you'll always be able to tell, but for the most part, it looks fine either way.

Now, you can see a clear difference between 1080i and 1080p, which is pretty terrible since most cable companies make you choose between either 720p and 1080i, and you can't get the most out of your TV.

Lazlo Falconi : I'd take 720p over 1080i honestly. I don't care if 1080 is a better resolution, interlaced display looks like crap to me. Progressive scan is the way to go.

Nah I can't really tell the difference between 720p and 1080p. Main reason is probably because my screen isn't big enough or doesn't support 1080p don't really know which.

I can't see any difference at all between 720p and 1080p. Maybe my laptop can't really use the 1080p's full potential, but I still think I'd go with 720p rather than 1080p resolution even if I did see a difference.

Crazy Li : My television in my bedroom is a Vizio 720P and I can honestly say that I don’t see much of a difference. My Roku player is has a best resolution of 720P or regular SD which I assume is 480I in technical terms. Every now and then I’ll have to switch from 720P HD to regular SD depending on what I want to watch on my streaming services. It can be annoying seeing those black boarders on each side of the screen if something isn’t in HD or watching something that has been released on Blu-Ray but hasn’t been adequately remastered so you have to deal with the boarders.

It’s a minor annoyance but for it’s value the 720p Roku is great for the price and I highly recommend it. Hopefully they will get a YouTube channel soon that’s the only drawback.

I can easily tell the difference between the two, because the TV in my room (A 23 inch) is 720, and it doesn't look as clear as the other TV in my house, which is 50 inches, and it is 1080p, and it looks a lot better than the 720p in my room.

It's better than the one in my little sister's room, which is 360p.

I could tell. Sometimes if you look at a Youtube video that has 720p, then look at the same video with 1080p, sometimes you may see the difference in Full screen.

I honestly don't care either way. On Youtube, if you go full screen you can tell the difference. I only do it for really special videos (ie. UHC videos (look it up (triple parenthesis)), or something that is best visually.) I especially hate it when my dad fiddles with the sound for 20 minutes to see if he can make it go from 5.1 to 7.1

I never notice personally, as long as I am able to watch what I want clearly its all good. I can see why most people may want to view things in the higher quality, but at the end of the day it isn't really all that important. As long as you can see the thing you are watching.

To be honest no I can't tell the difference nor do I really comprehend the point of either having resolution either 720 or 1080. To me it all looks the same altho my Blu-ray player has apparently 1080p so I guess it would be better out of the two.

I rarely watch videos in 1080p because they usually lag for me. But I honestly can't tell the difference. Maybe if I paid attention to the details I might be able to see the difference, but I don't really care to be honest.

It is slightly different, I mean not by that much. But when we were setting up our new 60 in tv we had bought it in 1080p but when we finished setting it up, it only showed up as 720p, but when we got it fixed we saw a slight difference in sharpness, not that much though. I like the way it looks with blu ray, it looks so amazing and sharp. I really don't care that much about this sort of thing, but my parents wanted it in 1080 so yeah, it still looks really nice though. So I guess it is maybe a little more sharp but not that much of a difference, 720 is still pretty clear.

I cant see a single difference between the two, which is kind of annoying, considering the fact that 1080 takes like a minute longer to load.
