My dad gave a ton of pieces for free food to me last year. If there had been a McDonalds anywhere near me (that I knew of) I would've cashed them in, but I never did. I've never seen a piece win a non-food prize, though, but that's alright. I'm a big fan of food.

I think the only thing that my family ever won from McDonald's Monopoly was free food and drink. I think we /might/ have gotten a $20 gift once, but I can't say for sure. Either way, I think the 1 in 4 thing is BS because it counts the free food & drink - which isn't much.

I'm pretty sure the important pieces (changes for each color group each time they have the promotion) are rare throughout the entire country. For instance take the Boardwalk and Park Place set. Supposedly, since those are the big winners, say thousands of Park Place pieces would be made and distributed, but then only 1 Boardwalk piece would be made. That's how they 'even the odds' and ensure that only one person get the grand prize. 

The online game is supposed to be easier and the prizes are worth less, but still significant. A few years ago, one of my only times playing this game (and my last), a friend of mine decided we should play this McDonald's Monopoly game online. He ate there quite often and I got the Sweet Teas so we ended up with a hefty amount of codes to enter online (needless to say we didn't get any of the physical pieces for a prize). We went around the board several times. Eventually we actually landed on Park Place! Now, being the online version, the prize wasn't $1M, but it was still like $10k, I believe. The next code we entered gave us a roll of a double 1!! Now, you might say, "Hey! You actually won from that thing? Congrats!" But that would be a bit premature. Next thing we know, the screen freezes, and the dice no longer display double 1's. How depressing.
Since then I have not participated in this event, but I might in the future. All in all, it's a big waste of time, unless you're extremely lucky. After that charade by the online game, I took a better look at the official rules for the online game. Now I don't remember exactly what it said, but it turns out that there's a specific time or some nonsense when they'll actually ALLOW your token to collect a prize. It even had the odds listed for winning. Again, I don't remember exactly, but we looked it up and the odds were better for winning the Lottery! Stay away.... lol

I didn't win anything, but I almost did.

It happened last year when had a 1,000,000 dollar sticker on the back of my fries. I had to get another one of those stickers in order to win though.
