I usually read the first post and the last post of a thread and skip most of the middle.

I find the first post tells me what the thread originator wanted the thread to be about and the latest post tells me where the thread has gotten to.... or it's something new to respond to.

I ALWAYS read the first post, and I usually read the whole first page. If the thread is huge, I skip the middle and go to the second to last page to find the last topic (If it changes) and then post. If it's only 4-5 pages though I read the whole thing.
