I'm going to make a couple confessions here. While I don't look under the bed for monsters and I'm not particularly afraid of the dark, although I don't enjoy being in a room where I can't see anything because I like to be cognizant of my surroundings at just about all times, I'm bothered by being in a room with mirrors or highly reflective surfaces if I can't see my reflection in them. If I'm not looking at it, even though I know better, I still get the feeling that it's watching me. Because of that, I can't sleep in any room that has mirrors in it. Does anyone else have this or a similar problem?

My confession: I'm sexy and I know it I for one AM afraid of the dark. I can't sleep without some light because... I don't know. I just get really creeped out if it's perfectly dark (no Rare pun intended, though I wish I could take credit for thinking that up on purpose). I can't shake the feeling that someone is there if there's no light even though, like you said with your mirror issue, I know there's nothing happening in reality. It's kind of frustrating KNOWING there is no danger yet being scared stiff. -__-

I have other fears, but that's probably the weirdest sounding one minus the one I mentioned about my fingers a while back, but that doesn't really belong in this thread.

Eirinn : Exactly. I know it's silly, but I still keep stuff laying around the floor and I barricade myself in with a board (I don't have a door, just a blanket used as a makeshift curtain) every night because nothing, and I mean nothing, can get in without making some kind of noise, which will wake me up immediately. I can't sleep without feeling completely secure. Not counting natural disasters, of course.

m0ssb3rg935 : Your not really alone on that....I make sure to divert my eyes from the window because of that reason. I will say it now I can get easily scared of things in the dark. Like for instance I feel someone will come into my room. When I was young and I had nightmares waking up sweating I would stay under my bed covers, until I saw the morning light before coming out from it. :/

The dark doesn't bother me at all. In fact, I do just about everything with minimal lighting (except study and read) and I still have perfect vision in spite of that. I also have a huge mirror on top of my dresser which doesn't affect my sleep at all (granted, I already have a hard enough time going to sleep as an insomniac as it is).

Even as  a child, I don't remember being afraid of the dark, mirrors, or monsters under my bed. The only big fears I have now is the fear of being stabbed (I can't imagine how painful of a sensation that must be...,) and sharks/poisonous spiders. Maybe your case of catoptrophobia (fear of mirrors) is caused by your perception of yourself or perhaps of a preconceived notion of your image? Maybe it comes from the superstition that a broken mirror leads to 7 years of bad luck? I'm not a psychologist, but those are just some guesses I'm throwing out there.

Eirinn : XD your confession....and what's the fear involving your fingers? XD

Razor-987 : I freak out if someone grabs one of my fingers and I don't know why. Lol Seriously, I will melt down if you grab a finger, this usually ends in me absolutely begging you to let go and twisting into all sorts of awkward positions, but only if it's ONE finger. Grab two together and I'm totally unaffected. All I can figure is it's a deep seated fear of a broken bone maybe.

m0ssb3rg935 - Don't give me any ideas man. Lol Also I forgot to mention that I have to cover myself up entirely when in bed. No matter how hot it gets, I must be covered from my neck down. I cannot have anything but my head exposed. Also my feet have to have the blanket tucked under them, and can't hang over the edge of the bed because I have this fear that something will grab them or climb under the blanket with me (and no, I don't believe monsters are under my bed. Lol). Finally I won't turn my back toward the door because I get a creepy feeling that someone will get me from behind. I guess I feel as though I'm an expert defender while asleep so long as you attack me from the front? I have no idea why I'm this way on any of the things I've said here man.

I used to feel the same way actually but I eventually grew out of it and I have a mirror in my room now and it doesn't freak me out. My case however was that I was afraid of seeing something in the mirror behind me or looking into it at night and seeing something in it. I knew it was a completely irrational fear but it still freaked me out anyways. I eventually just grew out of it though for some reason and it hasn't freaked me out since. As for the dark, it doesn't really freak me out either. However I do get a little paranoid if I have scenes running through my head of the last horror movie I watched but other than that it's not bad for me.

One thing for me though is that whenever I am sleeping somewhere, I have to be able to see the door. I can't be facing away from it. I'm fine with sleeping sideways in a room, as long as I can see the door.

There was one instance though when I moved into my new place, the pervious residents left a mirror in the upstairs hallway and when I was putting my bed together I turned around and saw myself and it freaked me out just because I wasn't expecting it to be there and to see myself. Funny how you don't recognize yourself right away XD I actually thought it was someone else in the house when I should have been alone. I had a good laugh about it afterwards. It's still up in the hallway, I thought it was a good place for it but from now on I've just remembered that it was there and it hasn't freaked me out since. It was pretty funny though.
