Man we like talking about food around here.

Okay so I'm not sure how many of you actually eat beans, as it may be more of a Southern states food than anything, but I'm a huge bean addict. I could literally eat them every single day for several weeks before tiring of them. However I learned the hard way that they taste as awesome as they do because of how my mom makes them: with a small hint of sugar.
See I went to this meeting one time and saw that someone had brought a pot of beans, so I grabbed a big bowl full of them...and they tasted about like dirt. No sugar.

Now don't get confused here, you don't add enough sugar to make them sweet, just enough to take away the bitter taste and bring out the good flavor naturally present in them. Same goes for cornbread, but that at least doesn't taste like dirt without the sugar.

So how about you? Do you put sugar in your beans, or have you ever eaten them that way? And in case anyone is wondering, you have to add the sugar while they're cooking otherwise it'll just taste...no. Just don't stir it into a bowl of them please. Lol

OOOHHHH yes I eat beans! But ,I do it like in the most awkward way not have sugar in it. Rather add in BBQ sauce for me its just right. I love doing this when I have the chance too of my regular breakfast with sausages, eggs, bacon, and more. XD

Have you ever tried doing that before?

Eirinn :

Yes, I happen to like beans and I absolutely add sugar (brown sugar)  when I prepare them.

I also add a little molasses and crisp bacon pieces. Very tasty!

I don't like beans very much, and will pick them out if I can find them. But I have watched my mom make beans. She soaks them overnight in a bowl in fridge, drain, rinse, then put in pot of new water with salt, pepper and smoke ham hock. Then they are boiled and simmered for a few hours. No sugar added to those. But she puts brown sugar and bacon in baked beans like for a party or holiday.

I really like cornbread though. Sometimes I make it myself with a mix from a small blue box.

The only real way I'll eat beans is either in chili, which I only eat if paired with Fritos and shredded cheddar, and in baked beans. That is, if we're not counting green beans. I really wish you hadn't said cornbread, though.... Now I'm REALLY hungry. I've never had cornbread with sugar before, but I don't think it would be my thing. I've never had cake cornbread, either. We always leave the egg out because we like the crumbly, gritty thing.

Eniitan : Unless you're making baked beans then I have never heard of that. My dad puts ketchup in his so why not BBQ? Sounds interesting anyway.

Deacon DeMan : Never tried that either. I've had spaghetti with brown sugar in it though, and that was pretty awesome. I never really cared for bacon, but the molasses sounds interesting.

yoshirulez! : Do you REALLY think I could ignore a meme? You do know who I am, right? Lol

Lilian : That cornbread... Sounds like Jiffy brand. Is it? I used to eat that kind but when I became a vegetarian I had to stop because it contains lard. After about five years we finally found a vegetarian friendly alternative brand though.

m0ssb3rg935 : Well again the cornbread isn't sweet, it's just to balance out the flavor a bit. And Frito Chili Pie??? One of the best foods invented since food became a thing, man! xD

Yes I found a box in cabinet and it says Jiffy. A couple of times we accidentally bought some that said Vegetarian on it. I did not know cornbread was not vegetarian already but you explained why it sometimes is not. Sometimes we make a corn casserole thing with it that has creamed corn, whole kernel corn, melted butter, sour cream and other stuff in it. I don't know exactly what vegetarian is other than no meat so it may not be good for you.

Eirinn :
Yes, a bit of brown sugar in spaghetti sauce tastes pretty good.

Some molasses (not too much!) in the beans gives a rich flavor...but, some folks find it a little intense.

I have never heard of adding sugar to beans and I've never tried it. I like a variety of beans and they go into 75% of the dishes we make at our house, or at least they're featured as a side dish and they're something that goes along with dinner.

Sugar? Brown sugar? Cane sugar?

I try not to add white sugar to anything no matter what. I avoid that stuff because it kills. Brown sugar to beans may work. I think either refried beans or butter beans may benefit the best but I'll be sure to try a few varieties.

Just a pinch of sugar? When? When I'm cooking them or after they're on the plate?

I need some directions here.

Ghostbear1111 :

Well, the type of beans I use are navy beans, either the dried ones or canned.

Add the brown sugar a little at a time while the beans are heating. As with most recipes, the amount you use depends on your personal tastes.

yoshirulez! : :^)

This sounds like an interesting thing to try, actually. I usually eat beans straight out of the can (and warmed). Or freshly re-hydrated lentils. Lentils and lentil stew is mind blowingly delicious.

Now you have me hungry for cornbread, I hope you're happy Eirinn!

Hmm... I have never them with sugar... perhaps I will have to.

Typically, I would boil them for a minute or 2, then put them into ice water (blanching) then I saute them in butter with minced garlic and add almond slivers into the bowl when ready to serve them.

Kilian : Basically anything that contains an animal by-product is a no no. So no meat, broth, lard, or gelatin. From what you listed there the casserole sounds vegetarian friendly.

Ghostbear1111 : We use cane sugar in them. Sorry. Not sure how brown would taste in beans but it would probably work, though it would achieve a different purpose entirely (actually sweetening the beans instead of just removing the less desirable tastes). As a vegetarian I really love beans due to the high protein levels.
Sugar is added while cooking (think I said that at some point, but I may not have).
I was referring to Pinto beans, but we also cook Navy beans and lentils this way.

A user of this : Why yes I am happy I made you want cornbread, User! And I'm even happier that I waited a few days to reply so you would want cornbread all over again. And lentils are awesome period.

Oh. One more thing...
CORNBREAD!
Have a nice day. :3

Vanelan : Something tells me you're speaking of green beans instead of pinto (I didn't specify which kind though). Either that or you have incredibly hard teeth (boiled two minutes). Lol That sounds really good though. Have me over for dinner sometime.

Eirinn : Okay...so wait...what kind o' beans we talkin' 'bout here. I live in ohio, and i love pretty much all of them to a certain degree. Jelly beans, baked beans, refried beans, pinto beans, green beans and even bean beans...(Oops I forget those only exist in the Bean Bean kingdom!) You're talking about baked beans, Right? Okay, so here's how I like mine: Brown sugar, bbq sauce, dash o' ketchup, and even a bit o' honey (no not the candy! Real honey!) Also, I like hot dogs in mine.

On another note...Why not talk about food; it's like the number one thing that goes with video games! Like Popcorn and a movie! Or is that just me?

FaithFighter : We be speakin' o' Pinto beans, lad. Sorry, the opening of your post sounded like a stereotypical old school Irishman. Though we also put sugar in the navy beans and lentils.

Gaming and eating are quite an enjoyable combination, but honestly I sometimes use the distraction of gaming to help when waiting on my next meal, it keeps me out of the snacks. xD Sad, I know. My big thing with gaming now that I have a system that can play music while I game is, well, listening to music while I game! The right tracks can really pump up the fun factor of a game. If you can handle harder stuff then Red is a great group for a Christian gamer to listen to while playing anything even semi-serious in tone. Though they are certainly very hard music...and not beany at all.

Eirinn : Shoot, I was aiming for southern...but I guess typing accents isn't my strong suit. I actually don't ever have pinto beans unless we're eating at hot heads, which is basically a chipotle that hasn't killed anyone with bad food yet (Also it tastes miles better!) Typically I don't play music separate from the game itself. But what you are talking about sounds like it would go well with the game Sin and Punishment (Still not sure why that is the title) and The last boss in Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword. Honestly, playing video games does distract me from eating sometimes, but other times not. Also...what would beany music even sound like...probably like Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga!

Eirinn : Sorry I didn't reply back before if your father does, that then someone else can put in something crazy like BBQ. I love it because it gives off like a different better taste in a way. ^-^
