When we go to visit someone else's house, there is one thing that we pretty much always have to do and that is to figure out what we should do with our shoes (this is assuming most people wear shoes when they go outside). In some cultures, it's normal (or at least more polite) to take off your shoes before you enter someone else's home, and sometimes, the host will offer slippers or just let you roam around the house in your socks or bare feet. Most of the time, we will also do our best to accommodate our hosts and emulate whatever it is that they do. If they wear slippers, we slip on the slippers (literally as well). If they walk around in their bare feet, we pad along after them in our white socks while trying not to think about whether bleach will work on the socks.

Usually, I allow my guests to walk into the house with shoes on if they so desired, but more often than not, they end up taking off their shoes to walk on the tiles and carpet (no slippers either). Sometimes, it's hard to figure out if they like the feel of the tiles or if they're just afraid the carpet will change colors or become a little less fluffy after they step on it with their shoes.

Thus, the question is... what do you usually do? Do you wear slippers around the house or do you walk around with bare feet or shoes on? Do you allow your guests to do the same as well? Finally, do you also have specific preferences because of the types of flooring in your house (wood, carpet, tiles, etc.), or the pets that you own?

Your responses to these questions might help to shed light on how we should behave/what we should prepare for or expect if we ever get the chance to Vizzit your house. =P j/k

I think it greatly varies depending in the country/region/city you live, and also the way of life you have.

Over here, we mostly walk on slippers when at home, and if we allow guests in, we use our shoes like if we were at any other place. It's like the only social rule we all follow over here: don't be any different from your guests.

As for the type of flooring, wood is rare and carpet is almost non-existent, so we relay majorly on tiles. Our everyday socks don't cope too well with them, so that's why we use slippers or shoes. However, we do have places where special socks for "indoor" purposes can be purchased. I've sometimes considered switching to them and forget about slippers, but I would still wear shoes when having guests over, mostly because that way we can go out again in the blink of an eye (and for the social rule mentioned above).

Yuna1000 : I guess it all depends on the way of life a person has while I understand that probably in some countries it might be considered impolite not to take your shoe,s off when you enter someone,s house down where I live I usually just walk around my house in my socks or sometimes I where slippers, whenever someone comes over to visit they can either where their shoes or take them off depending on what they feel comfortable doing but it all depends on the weather whenever it rains or snows it,s always best for people to take their shoes off so that they don,t get anyone,s floors or carpet dirty.whenever I visit anyone I always take my shoes off no matter what the weather is like because it,s just a habit that I have grown accustomed to

My family has always taken off our shoes when entering the house (we live in central PA, USA, by the way and aren't from an out of country culture or anything). My mom is kind of a clean freak, but it does make sense to avoid tracking in dirt when it's so easy to do so. Most guests see the pile of shoes at the door and remove theirs too or ask if they should take theirs off, but we don't usually ask others to take off their shoes, unless, like, they were just mud wrestling in them or something.

It's more comfortable to not be wearing shoes all the time in my opinion also.

Side note: When studying abroad in Japan, it was common to switch to slippers while indoors or special slippers only for the bathroom. In either case, pretty much every house would have an entryway just for removing shoes.

My family has no rules at all when it comes to shoes in the house. Some of us wear them, others take our shoes off. As long as they aren't muddy, they are fine. Although I personally take my shows off when I enter my house.

My house has mostly carpet. Although there is some (fake) tile, hardwood, and cement flooring. So don't worry about walking speed, you'll probably be fine. lol

I don't know if this is just common just where I live or not but in Sweden at least it's usually customary that you should take your shoes off either before entering someone elses home or in the hallway. Since the shoes may be dirty and that way they don't drag in any dirt. My mom usually lets people wear shoes if they want though, but in most cases they take them off anyway likely because it's considered the polite thing to do. I pretty much always walk around in my socks and never wear shoes inside unless it's because I just put them on and am about to leave.

It's really, really, REALLY hard to get our floor clean because it's very old linoleum, so there are no rules, really. Except the occasion that we come in out of the mud or snow. There are also a few places where there are a couple nail heads sticking up. Not sharp enough to tear your foot open, but they are uncomfortable and can scratch your feet or rip socks. We can't leave our shoes outside because of all the insects like spiders and wasps. If it's someone else's place and they have nice flooring, I'll usually take my shoes off at the door.

My parents are clean freaks, so we're not allowed to wear shoes inside the house. My parents have slippers that they wear just for home, but I prefer walking barefoot to that. We usually ask friends to remove their shoes (but most of the time, they do it anyways), and the only time where shoes are worn in our house is when like there's something wrong in our house and he have to call someone to fix it. Whenever I go to someone's house, I take my shoes and walk around in my socks or , preferably, barefoot.

I live in the South, certainly a bit of a lax region. As such, there aren't any strict rules. Don't be a mess and don't be an idiot. That's really what it boils down to.

This is indeed the case, for the most part.

No matter what Bara tells you.

I personally think you should not wear shoes inside the house, as well as not walk bare-foot in the house. No shoes is understandable right? Since you're tracking-in who knows what to the floor. But as for not bare-foot, the reason is our feet have oils which stick to either carpet or hard floor making cleaning them more difficult.

Most people where I live are okay with leaving your shoes on in the house, but as the starter of the post said,it depends on where you are going. I know when I would go to a friend of my Mother's,we would take our shoes off. I think as long as you did not step in anything and you wipe your feet before you come in,you are good. But if they put in new flooring or something, take your shoes off.

It's actually really interesting reading this and the replies to it, as I had no idea of the various cultures and their preferences on the matter. It has my curiosity piqued now.

Where I'm from there are no guidelines whatsoever concerning footwear indoors. We do however consider it rude to enter a house and not take your hat off (if you wear hats. I don't), but not shoes.

In fact we have a few different rules regarding when to remove a hat, though most aren't kept anymore. The general rules would be take off your hat when: indoors; someone is praying; in the presence of a woman (obviously this only applies to men). The first of those is about 50/50 with how often people actually follow it now, the second one I've never seen someone fail to follow, and the third one is so rare that I've never actually seen it done.

And on a side note: I'm lying on my bed and wearing shoes while typing this.

I can't believe people actually wear shoes from outside into their houses. I don't just mean into an entry way or something but all the way throughout the house. That is actually one of the most disgusting things you can do. The bottoms of your shoes carry so much crap on them (literally and figuratively) that wearing shoes inside your house is seriously nasty. I don't do it and don't allow other people to do it either.

Yuna I have already told you mine in pm. Even so there are a lot of people who are right about how house rules go and apply for. Even if its different its still similar to other peoples post in a way. Not having house rules could work for some people but not for most as A they either grew up with it just like their parents did or B never went into those kinds of things before but still adjust to their own small rules in a way. I just wanted to say that.

People rarely ever come to the home I live in, so I don't know everything. But some of them is probably taking your shoes off before stepping on the carpet (there's a place to put your shoes near the door, and no one is allowed to walk on the carpet with shoes on), and contacting my parents when you'll be there. My dad hates unexpected visitors :p.

As for my family, we just walk around barefoot (never saw any guest walk barefoot though) xp. I rarely ever wear socks unless it's cold and my feet are frozen (sometimes I wonder if they actually became frozen XD).

I've always had to remove my shoes in our house. It's just kind of habit now, I always take my shoes off when I go to other people's house. Even when they wear their shoes in their house, and they say it's fine to keep my shoes on, I still take them off. XD

Living on my own, I decided some of the rules that my parents had were not really ones that I wanted to keep. A few of them, I did. No shoes in the house, unless they're slippers. Leave your shoes at the door. Not only does it help keep the house a bit cleaner by tracking around less dirt, it's also easier to find your shoes if you know exactly where they are. Bare feet and socked feet make no difference, as long as you take your shoes off I'm fine with either. There are exceptions, of course. If you're running late and need to get out the door, or you forgot to grab a few things before you left, shoes are alright. I just don't want guests walking around with them on the entire time.

I've never minded shoes in the house as long as they're not covered in mud or anything. If it only needs vacuumed every so often I don't mind people tracking in a little dirt here and there. That being said, when it comes to cups or food, I'm extremely uptight about keeping everything clean (no food or drinks anywhere near the floor and stuff like that). Other than that I'm pretty lenient about everything. Just treat my things like you would treat your own, if not a little better knowing how some just don't care

Seems like common courtesy to me, but you'd be surprised lol.

We don't really have any house rules. My mom and step-dad are pretty laid back, which I like.

Also, I've been thinking. What's the point of making your bed? I'm sure I'm not the only one who's thought about this before. It's just going to get messed up again right when you enter it. Parents don't make me do that, but I know some that do. Plus, it reduces the risk of bed bugs if you keep your bed not made.
