While finishing up a shift at work tonight, my mom texted me to let me know that our AC is down. Now, that's probably not news-worthy for most of you, because it sucks but it isn't actually awful for too long or anything. However, I live in Florida, and that means it's really, really hot. As I write this, it's 3:30am, has been dark since 8ish (5.5 hours), and it's still a muggy 91 inside despite 2 fans in each room and every window open. That's compared to 77 outside, a very noticible 14 degree difference. I'm scared to see how hot it will be when I wake up for work at 11am, when the outside temperature will be back up at 86 or so. :/

Have you had a similar experience before in summer? What did you do to beat the heat?

Last summer we had a heatwave here in Europe so I went to bed at like 9AM and woke up at around 7PM, when the temperatures were cooling down.

I don't actually know how hot it was on some days but for someone who is used to living in a country with rain and cold winds practically every day it was like hell.

-At least I got to be in chat and the MC server while they were really busy

About three or four years ago it hit 119 here one day, and we went over thirty days with 100+ degree temperatures and our AC was out most of said month because the apartment complex refused to have it fixed.

To beat the heat? I dunno because the heat pretty much kicked my butt. However I survived the heat by literally sitting in front of a fan at all times. Also spending time anywhere where there was air conditioning helped (work, sister's house, store even).

Good luck. Don't die plz, kay? Thanks.

mrfe :

Hi, This is Sword Legion posting in from Oregon. And I experienced a very special surprise this morning. Not only did I get to bed at 10:40 which close to my regular sleep time for healthy work hours the next day, but I paid for putting on a second, very thin blanket by waking up at 4:00. Now I have to wonder just how soon it will be before my body wants to collapse today, thanks to the mugginess forcing me awake.

If you're me right no. Have no fear. Writing doesn't require decent sleep. And that's what fanfiction is for anyways. Better than falling asleep after laying down across the family bridge however.

(okay, that was a really nice memory. I want to do it again sometime.)

And I can't exactly take a shower at four in the morning. Though that would be pretty swell.
Actually, I'm going to see if I CAN get back to sleep rather than keep myself up like this. Makes more sense to me anyways. Thank you for sharing your troubles. I find them incredibly relatable.

Dark knight of the blackened sun. I am Sword Legion, one of many. My mask is thick, and my armor is strong. All the more necessary in a world such as this. . .

A couple of years ago my AC didn't work for about a week - I still think about that as like "the dark ages" for me, lol. It was dreadfully hot, and I wouldn't do that again if I was paid.

Good luck to you. Cold shows, lots of popsicles and other frozen treats, and loose clothing.

Yes, it's the inevitable heat death of the universe. We will all die from heat. Be very scared.

Anyways, I really don't like heat. It's awful, and it's less tolerable than coldness (I'm not a big fan of either, I highly prefer a medium temperature). I don't remember a time where the AC did break down however and I was really annoyed by it (probably because I don't live in Florida :p. I live in one of those colder states xp)

Regardless, hope you don't die by heat or whatever :p.

The people I live with hate when I use their electricity, so while there's an AC in one persons room and one in the living room, I get nothing for mine. I can't stand the heat so its such a pain, might not even get a fan for another whole month.

My AC went out when a huge heat wave hit Clarksville in 2012-ish and it was absolute hell. It got so bad we just went out of town to Birmingham which was not as warm as Tennessee surprisingly. A week later we came back cause a guy came out to fix it but gosh, it was terrible. Feel for ya man.

Haha, yeah I think we have all had to deal with heat and no air conditioning at one time or another, the other day my house was like 88 degrees all night long but I didn't mind because I had finals to study all night long for anyways.

The window unit in our kitchen went out a couple years ago for a couple months and there's no ventilation over the cookstove. Needless to say, we ordered a lot of pizza and grilled a lot of burgers. I have a feeling that we may experience something very similar before long. The AC unit in the living room is something like 30-35 years old and is starting to sound rather rickety....

Eirinn : Dude... where do you live???? On top of a volcano or something...?

Yeah, that's most days for me. While it doesn't get as hot for us up here in Canada most people don't have AC at all so when the days get to be above 80 (which isn't super often but it happens) there is little to help us cool off. Add on to that that the sun stays up until about 10 the temperature doesn't drop off some days until 10 or 11 and makes cooling off really tough.

However, we did buy a window AC unit for our room so that we could survive the summers when it got too hot. The girls don't seem to mind the heat as much as I do so they rarely get to make use of it

You should feel kind a lucky since you got AC. I live in Norway where I don't have AC and now  in the summer we get like 80-90 degrees or upwards to 30 Celsius and we are not used to it. But i see your struggle man. Its a pain to not have AC when its so hot.

My car's a/c has been down for months plus, it's a two door car with one window out of place so it's one window and sun roof. I am dying. The lower pressure hose came in yesterday so I'll be working on it this weekend and see if I get that fixed then get freon. It sucks! To me a/c was a luxury growing up in Puerto Rico now being here for over a decade, a/c is a MUST.

It happens here a lot because I'm poor and our A/C is dumb.  But, hey, at least you didn't get a dead skunk stuck in your A/C like I did.

Honestly the best you can do is drink a lot of fluids and just try and bear it..

For me if it gets way too hot... (My body is acclimatised to when i was homeless in winter) i just go was my hair in a cold shower and let it dry naturally.. it seems to cool me down a lot... then again i have long hair.. so i'm not sure if it works for those who don't.

Besides that i think everyone just does the same thing... Suffer x3

I have an air conditioner downstairs that keeps it fairly cool, but upstairs is brutal. Every single widow that opens is quite a bit smaller than the average ac, so they won't fit. Portable ones are pretty pricey and I keep putting off buying one.

My room has these huge floor to ceiling windows that span like 9 feet, so I get a lot of sun. I bought some black out curtains to help. Only one window opens (and not very much) so I keep it open all the time in the summer and have two fans running. Other than that, I usually have a glass of ice water to help beat the heat.

m0ssb3rg935 : Lol! Yeah crazy thing is, four years before that it rained for thirty days straight in the summer. You never know what to expect from the weather out here, but then that's what we're known for. However 100 is nothing unusual in this area, just not for that much of an extended period of time.

Side note: I'd take the thirty days of summer rain over thirty days of 100+ anytime. I actually enjoyed the rainy year...even though it resulted in so much humidity afterward that several people died from heat exhaustion the first day the sun came back out.

I live in Texas, there was a time here in either 2011 or 2012 (can't really remember) where it got to 120 degrees, and our AC was out. It was torture to say the least.

Oh wow...I'm so sorry dude. Drink plenty of water, and maybe get some wet towels. Maybe fill a cup with ice and a little bit of water, and just drink that to let it cool you down.

There's not much else to do, I'm afraid. Just hope that the AC gets fixed soon. I'm sorry man, that really sucks. >.>
