We all know that each city, each region, each country and each continent is different. Many of the American users over here aren't fully aware of all the differences, but we Europeans aren't aware of them either.

That's the purpose of this thread. Ask anything you want to know or are curious to discover about Europe!

The only people answering your questions so far will be the mods of this forum: Furret, Zlinqx and yours truly. You can ask questions in general so we three can answer them, or ask specific questions to one of us, but be sure to summon that someone when you ask a question just for him. Of course, you can also summon one of us on a later post if you want us to answer a question you made at least 48 hours ago and we somehow missed.

No special rules are applied in this thread beyond the usual ones for the whole board, but we would appreciate if you're patient enough to wait for our answer before you ask anything else.

With all of this clear, let's get this thread going!

Zlinqx :
Furret :

Be on the lookout for questions, you two.

yoshirulez! : Yay, random question to start!

Nope, I haven't seen anything like that around here. Don't know about upper Europe, though.

yoshirulez! : As someone who lives in Northern Europe I can confirm that's not a thing here either. At least if it is, it's being sold under a different name. Seems like a North American brand.

yoshirulez! : As a western european I can confirm that we don't have this.

Technicially spain is also western europe, but a lot of times we have things they don't.

Being that the netherlands doesn't have it I imagine germany, belgium, UK, etc. also don't.

EDIT: oh crap i completely overlooked what you said about only zlinq and furret and you.

sorry I am stupid.

So is it true that people in Europe cannot see the color Magenta?

If there was any major changes you'd make to your country, what would it be?

A user of this : Yes, unless you have non European roots Or you're British because British people are special.

Something I'd like to change about my country is all of the major parties as they stand now really. Sweden is built on a strong welfare system in recent years hence why we're described as so socialist. Problem is the socialist party block doesn't know how to properly manage the services that make up this welfare system anymore and just lacks economical thinking. The opposing block, the liberals/conservatives are trying to slowly cut down on it like they're trying to get rid of it entirely at the expense of the working class and our society as a whole. Then there's the anti immigration party who... Pretty much blames everything on the immigration policies and having a lot of racist members. While at the same time being kind of in between on what should be kept or not. Basically one of many reasons I see them all as unfit to rule the country.

A user of this : We do see it, but we call it Fuchsia. Or that's what I'm told every time I say something looks Purple.

There's a lot of major changes I'd make to my country. Removing stupid laws like the tax for using solar energy for self-supply, wiping out 85% of the politicians for all the corruption charges they're facing (and for being complete idiots as well), removing some stupid TV programs or probably even channels for being beyond the most absolute crap, reducing the taxes we're imposed to study (which have turned it into a privilege rather than a right)... The list goes on and on.

Furret :

Where in Europe have you ever traveled? Is there anywhere you have traveled to that you want to go back to? Anywhere you haven't been that you are really interested in going to?

I always find it interesting to hear where people like to go when getting there doesn't involve flying over an ocean first as well as likely knowing more people who have the opportunity to travel to these places more easily.

How is that for long-winded? Yes, that is also a question

geeogree :

I've been to the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Normandy (France), Trier (Germany), London, Rome and Mallorca.

I would really love to visit Greece sometime since I love the Ancient Roman / Greek cultures but my fear of flying might not make that possible, at least in the near future. For the same reasons I'd love to revisit Rome if it were closer by since that was definitely my favorite trip I've ever taken but I don't think I can do it a second time (or I'd like get a panic attack on my way there lol).

geeogree : I've been to the UK twice, four times to Germany and once to Portugal. If we count small travels as well, I've been several times to France, but mostly because I was like 20 minutes away from the border and so we could have lunch there and be home safely for dinner without much of a rush. And well, if outside of Mainland Spain counts as well, I've been once to the Canary Islands with my family and once to Mallorca because of school.

I think there's no place I've already traveled to that I wouldn't want to return. Probably Portugal was the least interesting of them all, since it's not as different as Spain, but I'd greatly consider returning there as well.

I'm interested to go to the deepest parts of France and not just the borderline cities. I'm also interested in Austria and Belgium, and while it's not yet within our possible destinations, I'd love to go to Italy, it's paradise for a pasta and pizza lover like me.

About your last question, I've seen you do way more long-winded posts, but I would prefer if you kept those to other threads and leave this side of the Atlantic stress-free for now.

geeogree : I've been to all the scandinavian countries which isn't too unusual since I live in one of them So Sweden, Norway. As well as quite few times in Denmark. Most of the time to take a plane from the Copenhagen airport lol since it's right across the sea from where I live. Takes me about 30-45 minutes to get there through the subway. But I've also been there on short trips before. I guess if you include it I've also been to Helsinki, Finland but that was quite long ago.  I've visited Germany but that was also very long ago so I barely remember anything from my trip there.

If you count it as part of Europe I've also been to Turkey quite a few times. Very nice and warm weather and really nice food. Though you'd have to eat outside of the hotels to actually experience turkish cuisine since it's typically a lot more tame there. Guess they think foreigners can't handle the spicyness. Not sure if I'd like to go back there now since I've been there three times already. Would like to visit some place new.

As for places I'd like to go to at some point, there are many. Britain has always been one. I've wanted to visit London which I might end up doing soon. Going on class trip next year to Scotland so that'll be fun I hope. Other than that the only other places I really want to visit is Poland, primarily to see Auschwitz. It would also be really interesting to visit Russia.

Ironically I'm most interested in visiting places outside of Europe. I guess because it's harder to get to Probably the two places I'd like to visit the most are the US (specifically New York or Washington, D.C ) and Japan. But that's probably not going to happen any time soon.

What is traffic like in the major cities over there? Here in Tennessee, we're known for our reckless lunatic driving.

Given the level of gun-control in most European countries, is there still a demand for gunsmithing, being artisanal work?

Is there any similarity between the traditional foods of the individual European countries and their americanized counterparts?

That last question in particular may be a deciding factor in whether or not I ever visit... I try to have an open mind about food, but in the end, I'm just really picky.

m0ssb3rg935 : Lunatics are all over the world, don't mind that much.

Here in Spain the driving is also very chaotic. Cars, trucks, bikes, bicycles... And all of them unfollowing as many rules as they can, be it street signals or lights. I think I could feel at home at Tennessee for this aspect.

Each European country has different approaches to driving. Germany with some sectors of the Autobahn without a established speed limit, France and the priority in roundabouts, UK and their cars with the steering wheel at the right... More or less chaotic, but different enough to confuse any newcomer or tourist.

I doubt there's a demand for gunsmithing. As you said, the level of gun-control is quite severe, at least here in Spain, so I can't really tell. Probably there's something about it if we search through the cities, you never know what can you discover.

I'm not sure I understand your last question. Americanized counterparts of European foods... You mean how you 'Muricans call it "bacon" when we sell it as "fried ham"?

A question for anyone. Two actually. 1. What's the most interesting thing about Europe, to you? 2. Do you have a particular favorite European culture? Thanks for answering.

This is to all of the people allowed to answer in this thread.

As Europeans, what is the 1 thing you really wish you could have from the States that you don't have in Europe?

I expect the most common theme here to be probably certain videogames.

More like authentic pasta and pasta sauce, pizza, French onion soup, Belgian waffles, French vanilla ice cream, etc. compared to what we commonly have state's side like chain pizza, jar sauce, instant or canned soup, etc. are they very much alike, but better, or can they even be compared?

EDIT: Also, is Spanish food anything like Mexican, or was it more influenced by the native Indian culture? If not, what's Spanish food like?

Ultrajeff : The most interesting about Europe... That's kind of hard to answer. It's not like there are many things that the countries share over here, each has their own and you can like them more or less.

Despite the many historical disasters, I still value the German culture. They are probably the best example to follow in many aspects nowadays, which in part comes from their vast heritage. I never get tired of travelling there, honestly.

yoshirulez! : I honestly can live without US exclusive videogames. What I would like is for cars like the Mustang, Camaro and the likes to be more easily affordable, just so we can see more of them in our streets. They are a magnificent view, in the top ranks of the cars that can break my neck.

m0ssb3rg935 : Absolutely no comparison. The true recipes always stay at their place of birth. I can assure you that whatever you may acquire in your local markets will NEVER be like what you can eat in its rightful place. And the same thing happens with 'Murican food here, if it wasn't for Foster's Hollywood and a few other similar franchises, the US would have declared us total war for the multiple assassination attempts towards their food.

Spanish and Mexican are totally opposite. We do have a few spicy recipes, but we don't use any similar condiments. As for how our food is like, each region has its own specialty, so it's quite hard to define. Fish, meat, rice... Even roasted squid sandwiches!

Ultrajeff : Never thought about it ilke that I guess the history is pretty interesting but that goes for all parts of the world. I think something that sets it apart from other parts of the world today is things like the EU, Eurovision and other European specific events. That there's something that to some extent unites European countries despite still being very much separate and different from eachother on a cultural/political/economical level if that makes any sense since that probably wasn't a very good explanation lol.

As for the second question, Scandinavian culture I guess? In some ways I like how we're a bit more reserved here lol and we also seem to have a sense of order. We've also made some great strides in terms of human rights. If any of this counts since I'm from Sweden. I don't really want to say too much about other European cultures since my impression is mostly based on what I've heard/read and how it portrayed in various forms of entertainment. So the way I imagine things to be is likely subject to some exagguration.

yoshirulez! : How you get all sorts of entertainment before us. Video games, movies, and having a lot of North American exclusive services I wish we had like crunchyroll. Those are all things that would make life more convenient for me that I'll likely never have There are the odd few cases where we got something before the US but those are much much more rare than the contrary being true. Other than that there isn't anything specific I can think off that I really wish for.

m0ssb3rg935 : For your first post. Sweden is probably one of the stricter European countries in terms of gun control and I honestly doubt there's much of a demand since most regular people don't own a gun nor are they really trying to get their hands on one. You'd have to consider that in many European countries who is actually allowed to own guns is very restricted. Here in Sweden you need to have a special permit for any gun that can be fired usually only issued to people who use it in their job. Even the police here very rarely resort to using guns and have a more non lethal/non violent approach. Most people don't really know much about gunsmithing either. In general Europe lacks the very apparent gun culture of the US so I don't think you'd find much interest in most countries. The notable exception to me would be one of the few gun friendly countries like Switzerland where I'd imagine there could be some interest.

Traffic is kind of hard to answer because Sweden is pretty calm in terms of the traffic here compared to a lot of other countries. However I also live in what is probably one of the most chaotic places to live traffic wise in the country. A lot of people immigrate here so they may be affected by the looser traffic regulations in their countries. Overall I don't feel it's too bad though. I've seen some reckless drivers but nothing that would make me scared to ride in a car.

For your second post, echoing what Palen said. I think this goes from pretty much any country not just the European ones. Store bought or local made varieties of different foods is usually no where close to going the country of origin and having the real thing. I'd imagine the same is true for whatever the local options you have is. Something I've learned from the few times I've travelled outside my country's borders.
