So, have you ever been in a weather emergency at school? Say you were at school when a tornado was passing by, or when a hurricane passes by. What did you do. And also, have you ever prepared for these situations? Do your teachers explain this, especially in Tornado Valley states? My teachers have (once), but that's all.

mario102 : It's been a long time, but I don't remember any actual emergencies at my school. We did do all kinds of drills though and I remember we always had someone designated to open the windows for a tornado (which is a debunked myth now btw)

I don't think I've ever been in school during and weather emergencies. The worst weather I've ever seen when I was in school was just really strong winds which knocked the power out but that's about all I can think of. Where I live we don't get extreme weather.

However, one time in grade 10 we had to go into a lock out situation because there was some guy running around with an assault rifle. I wasn't too worried because we saw on the news that he barricaded himself into a motel but it was only like 5 minutes away from the school. It was pretty intense.

There once was a big snowstorm that got us sent home early and out of school for the next week. Best week of my life.
That was in 2nd grade, mind you.

Apart from that, I've had to go through several drills.

Not THAT kind of emergency, but schools in Quebec often get preventively shut down for snow storms or extreme cold (below minus 30 Celsius). Better stay at home than risk harm.

There was a time when I was in elementary school and we all had to evacuate from the classrooms and into the hallways due to a Tornado Warning. It was one of the scariest moments of my life, and all I could think during the situation was "Please don't let anyone here die."

We all were against the wall in the position that the teachers taught us during tornado drills, but it wasn't the same this time. This time it wasn't a drill. Thankfully, the emergency didn't last long. I don't remember how long we were out there in those hallways, but it wasn't longer than a half-hour.

I was very happy we all made it through that day alive. I bet it was hard for most students to concentrate on the lessons after that. I was fine since back then I didn't have the anxiety issues I have now.

I don't know if this counts but i have been sent home from school because school got canceled half way through the day because of weather. But the only emergency I was in at school was when there was a guy who shot and killed 3 or 4 Mounties (that NEVER happens here, last time it happened was in the 1980s) And they thought that he had left the city that they shot the Mounties and came here because they saw a guy dressed in military camo, (that was what the shooter was wearing) Mind you, I live in a place where there is a military base in the town so to make that assumption is not that smart. but because of that they put all the schools in the town in to a lock out (no one leaves no one enters) And then at the end of the day a military guy came by the school and so they put it in a lock down, i was in gym class at the time and they gym teacher misheard "We are going in to a lock down" as "Okay the lock out is over" and opened the outside door to the gym and yelled at us when we went to the lock down hiding spot in the gym.

Prior to 2012, we used to get weather emergencies rarely. A nasty snowstorm, heavy rain, and heat waves came by sometimes and schools would close down in response.

That is, until that day in 2012 when a massive blizzard was predicted for the city. The board closed all of the schools, but when the storm came all that came with it was a few millimeters. After that embarrassment, the board opted to
always keep to schools open no matter what. That meant we had to tough our way through even Hurricane Sandy.

However, when high school came, more students opted to just stay home in such events. It's never a concern either, since most teachers also won't come.

Well, when I was in school, I remember that during the time Hurricane Katrina was set to hit, school just started and already, students were let out for like weeks due to the hurricane, but as soon as everything was back to normal, started school again. But as for snow and all, this place does not get hardly any snow, but even if they forecast at least 1/4 inch of snow, they shut down all the schools around here.

Other than that, they don't really close schools down here for anything

Not really, I live in the part of the country where big storms are kind of normal so nothing happens unless its really big. I wasn't there, but there was one day where I left school at like 4 and got to my doctors at like 5 and while I was waiting,l to go in, two tornados hit the city. One of them was across the street from the school and the only thing that happened was that everyone who was still there had to go to the cafeteria, which was all windows.

In many classrooms, there were certificates congratulating teachers for coming in during the 2012 blizzard, In fact, during that blizzard, which had like a foot of snow for a week, there were only two days where school was closed. The first time there was a snow day in 18 years. Aside for that, school has only been closed for about 6 days since 2000,the day after the tornados because trees were blocking all the streets to the school and the week during hurricane sandy. It takes a lot to be an emergency here.

Yeah like when it snowed a lot, and we were snowed in school and got home late. Or, had trouble getting to school because of how the snow was and we got to school very late. Latest time was like after 9am in the morning. And some of the teachers were worried!

At that time I always got picked up by a bus just for disabled people. It was pretty worrying how one time the bus had to go up a hill in the snow...

I've never had any serious weather related emergencies at my school, aside from the standard fire/ tornado drills scheduled throughout the year. The only serious threats I've ever had at my school have been bomb threats (I hate these). I remember when I was just entering high school on the very first day, and near the end of the day, there's a bomb threat warning and everyone ended up waiting outside in the blazing heat for about 2 hours. I want to say that in the 4 years I've attended my high school, there have been 2-3 bomb threats. Another time, the cafeteria kitchen went experienced a few small flames because one of the appliances created a spark. It wasn't anything serious though.

While I am thankful that I haven't had any serious weather related emergencies at school, bomb threats can be a close second. I do however, apologize to those who've experienced serious weather emergencies during a school day. I can only imagine what that must be like.

Yes seveal times especially for tornadoes and flooding

In 1995 I was in elementry school and we had to take cover twice in 1 day due to tornadoes touching down nearby. We went into emergency mode cause it was getting bad. when we got a break they let us go home early before another round came

May 1996 again for tornadoes

In 1998 a tornado hit near the school so the school was in emergency mode

May 2003 when I was a junior in high school we went into emergency mode because heavy rain was moving in with embeded severe storms. They told us to move and get off the property not to say behind and talk with our friends as it was an emergency

February 6th  2008 now in college my school went into emergency mode due to tornradoes and straight line winds.

October 26th  2010 Now in grad school we had an emergency with classes being cancled due to severe weather outbreak yep tornadoes again

April 27th 2011 We went into emergency mode was told for those of us that did not live on campus to get out due to another tornado outbreak

May 2013 last day and my graduation day. We were moved inside due to emergency as places were flooding

Yeah, we had something like that happen in middle school once. It was storming like crazy that day, and rumors were going around that we were under a tornado warning. They eventually sent us to the school library where they made us get in our favorite, most comfortable "shelter" position under the tables. They were announcing every 3 minutes for kids to get signed out, but I was sadly not one of them. Luckily, school dismissed early after that!

I don't live in a danger zone for tornadoes, but we still have Tornado Drills about 2 times a year. I have never experienced a weather-related disaster at school, fortunately.

I guess you could say I was in one on Friday, but it wasn't even my school. I was in my old school using my laptop the entire day since the winter break in my current school doesn't end until march but the old school started class already. Friday afternoon was when the blizzard started to hit but it began a few hours earlier than everyone thought it would so the city started s***ting down and the school had to close everything down at like 6 PM, which is normally open until like 11/

Yeah, a couple of times. Last year we had to duck with our heads in our knees against the wall. Pretty scary, but that doesn't usually happen since I live near the mountains.
