In the wake of a judge's ruling to remove the means to trademark the name of the Washington Redskins football team (of which I will keep my personal opinions to myself), I began to think of other instances where a similar name could be just as controversial. Initially, this was just going to be a silly poll. Nothing serious, just something for a laugh. But the more I thought about it, the more curious as to what the public response would be I got. The name of the state of Oklahoma stems from the Choctaw "okla" and "humma"... Together, they translate to "red people."

So the question is: is the name of the state of Oklahoma a racial slur and should it be renamed to respect minorities? Or is it honoring our native indian ancestry, and it should stay the same?

Lmao. If you're offended by the name of a damn state I have three words for you: Get over it.

Why is EVERYTHING racist nowadays? And how come the so called "minorities" aren't even the ones complaining? It's all just angry people, morons, and people with dyed hair who scream at their blogs until someone decides to throw away long established traditions so that nobody gets their poor widdle feelings hurt.

Of course it's not racist, User put it best. All these SJW's marauding around who really don't know what they're talking about are far more of an annoyance than a help. Getting offended at everything is a waste of life.

Besides, back in the day if you bothered to name an institution or entity or whatever after a peoples it was almost always a sign of respect.

No, I'm pretty sure most people haven't even thought about it. I don't even think it's something actual minorities complain about as much as it's "Social Justice Warriors" complaining about it.

If you're going to get offended or upset about something, save it for something that actually matters.

The biggest question is why is everyone getting offended on everything, first the whole Confederate Flag controversy and now changing a state's name, this is why the United States is going down the drain. Here's my ideal way of anything that offends you, just deal with it and let it go. People now a days are too sensitive, and that is what is weakening the whole planet, people getting offended over something completely stupid.

Or put it like this, I am offended because you're offended at something stupid.

In Wisconsin, Marquette university changed their mascot from the 'Warriors" to 'Golden Eagles' a few years back proactively to avoid any accusations of racism. Warriors for crying out loud. Not even some goofy indian like Cleveland has. It was a proud-type warrior. But no. Can't have that. You would have to rename more than that in this country I'm afraid. All this nonsense is what actually keeps this debate going. Another example is that no one had a real problem with the confederate battle flag until that kid shot up that church. He had a flag stitched on his jacket or whatever. Along with the former flag of South Africa. When a dude wearing a Jay-Z shirt or whatever commits a crime we don't ban them. It's just fuel added to the fire to keep people suspicious of each other and distracted while real evils are being committed against them by people they elected to make their lives better. They took the Dukes of Hazzard off the air man! I used to watch that with my grandma.

Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if somebody tried to pull the stunt you just described. Honestly, I really wouldn't be. 

However, that is a cool tid bit of information. I mean, I knew that Oklahoma is / was home to a lot of Native American tribes, but I never knew that the state was based off of the Choctaw's language. 

These kinds of discussions about America are grimey. Like the guy who decided it was racist was the one who named it. Was he there with our forefathers? NO.

In reality, America is going further down the toilet each day, and these kinds of discussions add to it.

As for the original topic: I hope you only meant to be sarcastic. Because frankly, if we are to go hunting down everything that might be the most slightly offensive to anyone, then society will fall. Free speech means saying things that might offend others

janus guessed it. I was really bored when I made this thread, and while I was interested in every one's opinion on this, it was intended to be a half joke from the start. My apologies to anyone I may have mislead to think this was a totally serious discussion, dry humor doesn't come across very clearly in text form. Though, I can't honestly say I'm displeased with the result, I was beginning to be concerned that the majority of people were getting ridiculously over sensitive. Also, I agree with everyone here.

By the way user, that crack about the hair dyers could have offended multiple groups of people ranging from young, rebellious kids, to vain women. You might have to issue a public apology.

Issues like this make me weep for the worlds future. If invaders (becuase that's really what the settlers were in crude terms) have no right to honour the peoples they took land from by naming an entire province/state after those peoples, than what has society come to? It's good to be 'politically correct' so as not to offend the masses and cause a mojar row in the media, but people these days are going overboard with it. Shoot, it's even trickling into things that are made to offend (some types of comedy, for example). People really need to educate themselves before they attempt arguements or they make themselves look like an ass and upset everyone who hears them....

TLDR: Idiots saying that something made with the intent to honour victims is offensive make me face-paw and weep for humanity.

I feel the same way I feel the same way about this issue as I do with the Washington Redskins issue, they should not have to change their names just because a few people think that it's "offensive". Seriously, Oklahoma has been around for over 100 years, and people are now saying that the name should be changed? Give me a break... It's like if someone were to say that Rhode Island should change their name because it's not really an island. How does that make sense? I know it doesn't make sense to me, that's for sure.

gamerforlifeforever2 : Actually, to my knowledge, no one is actually moving to have the state's name changed, yet.... I was simply employing the same erroneous line of thinking used in the Redskins case to see how ridiculously far people would take the issue. On the other hand, I really hope no one finds this and decides to run with it.....

Chindogu : interesting point of view: honoring. Many names in Canada have obvious Native origins (Quebec, Saskatchewan) simply because that is how they name the place in their language.
