I've made some adjustments to the Private Message system which should make the overall site run faster. The PM system has been responsible for site slowness for quite a while. Over 1 million PMs have been sent from all users so it makes sense. I found a way to optimize it though so the site should run a bit faster.

It really depends on the page but you may see speed improvements anywhere between 50% - 200% faster.

I've already noticed a difference personally.

I always enjoy these threads. It must be really satisfying to find ways to speed the site up every once in a while.

It would have been even better to have figured it out years ago but still nice to have the speed boost now

geeogree : Yeah it's always awesome to find ways to speed up the site without having to increase server fees. There are probably many other ways to optimize the site but it's just a matter of finding the time since it's very time consuming. I've probably invested 100s of hours over the past few years looking for ways to speed up the site.

I also noticed a difference, but I noticed it right after I read this post, so now I don't know if it's just in my head or not.

Either way, I'm glad Vizzed got this update!

I can't believe pms were a culprit to slowing the site down. Wow!  Also, I'm not sure whether I'm more shocked that 1 million pms have been sent by users, or that ONLY 1 million have been sent.  If you can tell us, just out of curiosity, who has sent the most pms other than yourself? XD

   Great to see an increase of speed! I notice it especially when going to the members page, which is normally pretty slow to completely open up. Great job as usual with the updates, David!

You mean the site can be even faster? I'm going to be honest and say that to me, vizzed was already the fastest forum that I have ever seen, and I have seen dozens of forums. I literally hate the pewdiepie forum because of how slow it is and there's a bunch of other forums I sometimes visit where I have literally told myself that they need to be like vizzed in terms of speed. Not really an actual functional feature, but a really good one. Too bad I've been on my phone for the last 5 hours so can't actually see the difference.

I've noticed it too. About half of the site takes me anywhere form 13 to 23 seconds to load. Now, it takes me about 5 to 8 seconds to load about 75% of those pages.

Thebiguglyalien : Normal users may not notice as big of a difference but the more inboxes you have and the more PMs you have, the bigger the improvement. Staff have access to multiple inboxes so they'll notice the biggest improvement.

zanderlex : Yeah I've always been a fan of fast forums, I can't stand using forums that are slow. It has always been one of my higher priorities to make sure this forum is speedy and sometimes it's tough to pull that off without sacrificing features but I've learned a lot of tricks over the years.

I don't really see a difference in that the site is laggy for me. Maybe it's my computer or vizzed? Anyways, sounds very good. Maybe i'll notice when my computer is better

Singelli : Yeah that's crazy that your numbers are right up there with mine and I'm the owner of the site and have been accumulating PMs 3 times longer than you have lol. That's nothing to be embarrassed about though, it just means you really care about the users of the site and are actively involved with them.

Well, the ironic thing is that I always feel terrible about NOT getting to my pms. (That's part of the reason I'm shocked that I've sent more than I've received).  My pms tend to accumulate (I'm sure nothing like yours though), and sometimes I take two months to respond to them. I always want to make sure my responses are of quality, so responding to them can be daunting.  If it's been a few months, I sometimes just decide not to respond at all! (And boy does that make me feel bad.)

The weird thing is that random people pm me all the time asking for advice and spilling their hearts to me. I'm not complaining, but I do wonder where it comes from sometimes.  lol

I guess I don't feel bad about my numbers.... but I'm still a bit embarrassed. I knew I was a chatty cathy, but I didn't know it was THAT bad. XD

Yeah, I have notice that the site is a whole lot less laggy now after you happened to clear some of those PMs David, and I think that with the better performance will help the site a whole lot in the future. For now.


I know on how crazy people send you PMs David, it can be tough on you, but hey, you at least manage it though.

IgorBird122 : Actually the crazy thing is, I didn't remove any of the PMs, I just optimized the table better.

Davideo7 : Still, I think that still a food thing, and despite you still have the PMs in your system, but keeping them in order to make the site go faster is a nice idea to have the site to go much faster, because prior to this, Vizzed did lag a whole lot.

Davideo7 : I wasn't sure because I do have an alright internet speed, it might of been my end that caused the major lags to happened (because I had a few issues on other sites at the time it lagged), unless it happened to everyone else.
