I'm fairly certain that it has happened to most, but the sensation when you wake up from a dream that had you losing your breathe from something as simple as missing a step, to something akin to skydiving.
I was just wondering what circumstances you've all faced to be woken with that breathless feeling, and if any of you are aware of the reason that your body reacts so strongly to the simple thought of it?

I have had some dreams similar to this. Falling dreams actually make your brain believe that you are actually falling like if it was reality. Your brain is connected to the situation/dream that you are in sometimes. I remember one time after I encountered a falling dream that I woke up all sweaty and burning hot. It really felt like it was a life risking situation.

I actually never have like "falling" dreams. Not that I remember at least. I always have dreams were I slip on ice though. Unsure why it is always ice but sure enough I'll wake up with my heart racing like people describe for falling from a cliff or whatever dream. Which in hindsight is pretty dumb because in all the other situations of falling dreams you actually do have a chance of dying or at least becoming seriously injured. And here's my tame slipping on a patch of ice. Maybe I don't dream of falling from high places because I actually am pretty terrified of heights and it's never like I'm having a nightmare when it happens.

I never have dreams where I'm falling.

I do, however, have loads of dreams of me flying. I'll fly over the city, over the world, over the galaxy, anywhere.

I have no idea what's causing all of this madness, perhaps it's because i love planes. Though i may never truly know...

uferp : I have had numerous dreams where I wake up in a panic and nearly out of breath. Oftentimes, I wake up feeling as though I was falling and also feel it in the dream. One time I remember being chased by this reaper-looking black creature. I ran as fast as I could. and jumped into a tree, hoping to get away from this creep. The branch began to crack and fall. I could feel myself falling, which I can neither explain nor understand. With my fear, I woke up with a gasp. I have also dreamed about the jump that went too high and I could not come back down from. I have felt this one in particular a number of times. I jump, and I end up flying into the air! But then, I want to get back down, and I feel stuck in the air! Then, gravity suddenly turns back on and I can really feel the drop. I always wake up before I hit the bottom. I think it is because my subconscious does not know what happens next that the dream suddenly ends. Being in the middle of the intensity of such of thing is why we probably wake up out of breath and sometimes still feel as though we are falling.

I don't have falling dreams either. Though I sometimes wake up gasping for air.

In those cases, it's because I subconsciously started holding my breath.

In the dream itself, I think I feel some sort of panic right before I wake up.

I wonder if that's basically how a falling dream feels.

I do not really have falling dreams either, Simply because i rarely dream and when i do it is of epic fantasy stories or perhaps my most recent one which was survival horror mixed with comedy, It was a zombie apocalypse akin to Shaun of the dead ironically.

As for the reason i assume it's simply your brain in a remnant state processing this information and perhaps your brain is just relaxing too much and ends up sending a signal that feels like your falling shortly before you wake up.. Probably the same thing with people that wake up gasping as well.

Sadly as the brain is so complicated and diverse, Finding out a true reason why it happens is pretty slim, It is probably all just pure speculation at this point!

I used to have lots of these dreams when I was younger. I haven't had one for probably ten years? I also used to have frequent dreams about being stabbed in the belly-button.

uferp : scientific studies show, that if you get to the end of your dream, and splatter all over the ground, you die in real life. Your brain shuts down because it thinks that you really died.

Oh man, I wouldn't call them dreams, but yeah there have been times when i woke up with the sensation that I'm falling. though well I like them, cuz well I'm not really gonna fall, and it feels ridiculous as to how the body reacts to the "fall"

I don't remember any real circumstances for the "dream" to happen, though all I get for remembering the circumstances are thinking very less and well not warm, not cold condition, but I could be mixing it up with the circumstances when I happen to wake up during night..

HaHa! Last night I had a crazy one! I dreampt someone was after me, and I took wings that looked like the ones that belong to ridley to fly! That was so cool. That is, until someone decided to take them and ended up breaking my getaway! I had also dreampt that I was using the grapple beam to get around. When I jumped off the grapple, I opened the wings! That was totally awesome! My first, Metroid based dream!

I haven't had one of those in literally decades and I kinda miss them.

I'm not sure why we have them but I heard once that if you have a falling dream and actually die in that dream you die in real life.

So, here's my question - Who discovered that if you die in a falling dream you die in real life? If they discovered that it's true, aren't they dead? How did they tell anyone that it was true?

I call "Old-wives tale"/urban legend on that little bit of info.
