Will anybody be doing anything special for the 4th of July? BBQ's? Fireworks? Sleeping in as late as you can?

There's really so much that I can do that I can't decide. I could go to a special BBQ that will be taking place in Manhattan. It's free and I went to the same BBQ last year and actually did an article on it HERE

I might go to Governors Island for a bit to visit the beach and go bike riding, I might go to the movies as well to see something new and I might go watch the fireworks tomorrow night in the city.

Or I might just sleep in and find a place that has free wifi.

What are your plans?

imamonster : Well of course people outside of America wouldn't know about it, all it is is food and fireworks to most people.

You create one of these every holiday during the TdV's. Maybe it's time to let someone else get to it? LOL  Actually, I've always felt these threads to be kind of pointless, because they're really redundant. Every year, someone creates a 'what are you doing for this holiday?', for EVERY holiday. They can't really be lasting threads and so, in my opinion, are pretty spammy. They're applicable for a few days and then after that, they just lie around, gather dust, close, and add to all the clutter.

Maybe in the future, we could ask mods to just open old threads on holidays?  At least then, all the temporary stuff is kept in one place....

Anywho, this one DID interest me because.... I've actually never thought much about July 4th. I wonder if I seem insensitive to feel that way?  I mean, I understand it's an important date with amazing history, but I never really could get into it. Growing up, we would go out with my family to watch fireworks... but I can't say they ever thrilled me. In fact, I really only remember ONE show which was in Alaska. We got to watch it from the back of the pickup bed, fighting the cold with our puffy jackets. It was around a lake and a lot of other cars had parked their to watch.  I'm sure at SOME point fireworks excited me, but I find them boring, really.

Ever since I've moved out on my own?  I could care less when it rolls around.  In fact, I'm always shocked when I can't traverse the streets in my neighborhood (or at least, where I used to live).  The street I lived on is at the top of a hill, RIGHT under the fireworks display, so everyone drives there.  Like.... EVERYONE within a 25 mile radius, at least.  The roads are already super small and narrow. When you add cars parked on both sides and people sitting in the streets.... the city LITERALLY is at a standstill. It takes hours to clear the streets because nobody can move and everyone has to depend on others to unblock the way.  When I'd walk out and get in my car... only to realize the streets were full and I couldn't go anywhere.... I'd bop my head and only then realize it was July 4th.

I will be sitting here, writing posts in threads and just generically talking to other users from all over the world.

Whether it will be on here, or on skype or on steam depends on who i talk to of course.

Besides that I will probably be grinding on Final Fantasy X and doing more staff work here..

Yes being British is so much fun

imamonster : Yeah, it is American Independence Day

I, myself, as a slave to the Walmart corporation via their warehouse store, Sam's Club, will be at work for most of the day. Because Independence Day is totally the day that people want to drive to Sam's Club and buy a new cell phone! Oh well, at least I get holiday pay and free lunch, right?

After work, not really sure. Ever since we moved here I have had the 4th off so we would go down to the Regatta in Pittsburgh for the big fireworks show... but it isn't worth going down there at 6pm, so we are probably just going to try and catch one of the smaller shows closer to home.

Elara : I'm not sure getting paid and having a limit to hours worked per week can be considered slavery.  Of course the internet eliminates all ability for us to bring tone and non-verbal keys into the conversation.  Maybe you're being sarcastic, maybe I'm being facetious right now.  No one can tell.  I have no idea how serious you are on a level of 1 to 10.  I hope it's not 10.

You are working.  And we lose customer service reps to Wal-Mart every so often so something must be going well over there.  They out-pay us, out-benefit us, and seem to be nice enough.  But this isn't a conversation about corporate America.

This is about 'Murica!

I'll be celebrating by doing the things Americans do best.

1.  Drink beer.
2.  Watch explosions in fireworks form.
3.  Heat crappy left-over meat processed from real food until it splits in the middle and drown it in ketchup (hot dogs!)
4.  Talk about how the U.S. would have beat Belgium if it were war instead of soccer.
5.  Cover the country in red, white, and blue.
6.  Relive our glorious history of the Marine Corps, "Japan said it would take a million men 100 years to capture Tarawa.  It took the 2nd Marine Division 72 hours."

You know, 'Murican stuff.

Elara : Sorry about you working, I had to work every 4th of July that I had a job, most of the jobs think this is meant to be an afternoon and evening holiday.  I hope that you can pull together something fun after it.

I'm going to go on a posting spree and ask my parents if there are any fireworks in my city that we can see tonight. I used to stay outside most of the day because my neighborhood had a block party every year. I rode my bike in the street, played some games, went on a water slide, and other things I can't remember.

warmaker : I was at about a 4 or 5... mostly fueled by the having a Master's Degree and still being stuck working retail. I don't know what your Walmart pays, but ours are undercutting no one.

I just think it is silly to have the wireless kiosk open on the 4th of July... who is going to buy a phone today? One person, that was who.

I am mostly cranky because the first time in four years that the weather on the 4th isn't hot and humid to the point of being miserable and I had to work all day (I've had it off the last three).

But I've had yummy tacos for dinner (because hot dogs are gross) and we should be heading out to grab our spots to watch fireworks soon (yay)!

Nope, not doing anything today. Just sitting around the house. I have two "5th of July" parties tomorrow though. I am going to one and then I am going to show up late to the other one.

Well most of the day was ruined because of rain and stuff so all I did was stay inside and play video games with a friend for the most part. The BBQ and Govenors Island were both closed, but the two of us did end up going out to Manhattan to see a movie and other than that I guess it was an ok way to spend the holiday.

Well, since I live in Canada, I don't celebrate the 4th of July. Though, I might as well tell what I did a few days ago for Canada day. I went to a festival to watch some fireworks.

Firework show was actually pretty awesome, surprising considering it was in such a tiny town (it's like four blocks long and we were all around a corn field)

The only thing that got to me was the little fair they had at the park... well, two things about it really. Half of the booths were selling or displaying Confederate flags, and the band they had playing concluded their set by playing the song Dixie.

We have a lot of non-American board members... and probably a few who are American and just didn't pay close attention in history class... so I will explain why this bothered me: this is our biggest national holiday. Our Independence Day, a day that celebrates our national pride and unity as a country. The Confederate flag is a symbol of war and treason from our Civil War... it is, basically, a flag of a breakaway nation that tried to destroy that unity. The song Dixie was the de facto anthem of the Confederate States. It's a catchy song, don't get me wrong... but I find it hypocritical and offensive for either to be highlighted on the 4th of July. To add insult to injury, did you know that both the Battle of Gettysburg and Siege of Vicksburg (two major Union victories that shifted the Civil War in their favor) both ended on July 4, 1863?

I understand that the region of Pennsylvania that I currently live in was torn over the Civil War, and the Keystone Confederates (Pennsylvanians who fought for the South) largely came from this area... and that maybe some of these people are a bit confused as to the whole thing... but you don't celebrate the Confederacy on the 4th of July! It's tacky, disrespectful, and offensive to our country and the troops that died in to preserve the Union. That's like singing the German national anthem on D-Day.

I am honestly glad that today only comes once a year, this has to be the most annoying of them all in a way. Its 20 minutes after midnight, and I can hear 4 different firework shows within 10 blocks of my house. I'm hearing a firework every 2 seconds and its killing me. Its fun for a while but then tears you apart.

Last night had given me such a headache, I ouldn't get to sleep until 5 AM because of all the fireworks. Then after all the fireworks stoped, every 5 to 1 minutes you would hear a firetruck go by in the area so it was a pain to try to get any sleep.
