Do violent video games make people murder? "No, No, officer, its not my fault! Grand Theft Auto made me do it!" Oh it seems to be on the news almost every other month. Someone has killed someone over video games or video games were involved some how. I personally think its a joke to say any video game made you kill something, the people that say that are just cowereds that don't have enough guts to take responsibility for their own actions. It is so much easier saying something else made you do it and its so easy for the media to say "violent video games are making our kids kill!" when they don't even really understand what they are talking about.

So what do you think? Can a game make you take a life? Can playing a violent game push you over the edge?

GenesisJunkie : I've heard this topic for so many years now and the obvious answer is NO! That's like blaming your car for it breaking down, or blaming an eraser for making a mistake. Sure Sure you may learn some things and shooting things but there's a difference between games and reality, let's say for instance Resident Evil 4: Leon S. Kennedy can fire a .50 caliber revolver with relative ease this of course being because he's been in the Police Force which would make sense in real life too. But if you're not familiar with shooting the gun and some amateur kid tried doing it then I'm pretty sure his arm would either dislocated or break and possibly even put a hip out of place as well.


Simple answers for Simple questions.

You know, I have said this a million times before and I will say it again, Video Games don't cause people to go out killing other people, how I look at it, people has been violent way before video games, movies, music, or even books existed. All I see it is they just put on the blame on video games so they can blame something else other than themselves.

Let me ask you something, did Lee Harvey Oswald play any violent video games before he went to kill John F. Kennedy? No, he hasn't.
Violent video games don't have any affects on the murder rate, in fact, little do they know, violent video games actually improves the murder rate, because people takes their frustrations on a game and I figure that's better than killing an innocence person, and also, it's not like a game is brainwashing people to kill people, because games that is controlling people's minds, that's all Science-Fiction.

So bottom line, people blaming video games for all the murders needs to get their heads out of the gutter, all I can say, "Video Games don't cause people to kill people".

IgorBird122 : I totally agree with everything you said. I mean really, they are just grasping at straws. The next thing you are going to see is them giving console to serial killers saying "look, see, Manson loves video games, they must be evil.". Its all just so crazy man.

They will really blame everything for stuff like this. Like most I agree they do not in any way. I wouldn't even say they teach you that much as playing a shooter or two doesn't make you ready for the army. Video games I would say are helpful for people who are stressed and can allow them to unwind and have a little fun. But if they go out and kill someone after that's something wrong with them mentally and a video game wont mentally damage someone.

I think the idea of video games making people murder is ridiculous. Either the person had a problem and was going to murder anyways, or the person is mentally stable and would never murder.

The news has always started with a death here and a death there for the past 10-20 years; so it doesn't surprise me that they want to blame some of the murder on video games - it does however annoy me.

I'll quote myself: "I played this sick game - and now I'm inspired to go murder".

No, I don't think so.

While it may not always be a direct reason, I think violent video games can definitely have a strong influence on the choices people make. I think that violent video games are just a scapegoat for people committing school shootings and other violent acts that involve murder, but if it violent video games did that, than everyone would be dead. Before video games were around, people were doing the exact same thing.


I will say however, that being unsocial and hating the world, and being the kind of quiet/shy kid that everyone picks on and playing these violent games are the perfect mix for the type of person that would do these types of things. A lot of the times it is the quiet, unsuspecting person that gets bullied and then goes on a rampage....

A while ago when GTA V first launched video games actually saved someones life. Actually one of the most violent video games did.

A kid was walking home from a midnight release of the game when there was a house and fire. He ran inside and saved an old man from the burning building.

It honestly can never be video games that murder people or cause people to murder anybody

Though being exposed to it at a young age isnt good, and some responsible parenting goes a long way, people cause murder, and what they do isnt dictated to them by things lime video games.

Man is naturally violent, and depending on their psychology, they're toned down, or domesticated by society.

I find it very hard to believe that the Ancient Greeks played violent video games.

The real reason they're being demonized is that governments need something to blame, to hate, so that they can ignore humanities nature and push up their votes in the next election as part of a platform. They're literally spewing words and making the average person believe things like this.

"Oh god! They found Call of Duty:Black Ops II" in the Sandy Hook shooters home! That means the game made him do it"

Things like that are what they did to marijuana, another harmless thing they made look like it was associated with Satan himself that is clearly not for children.

If you're so scared of a child being harmed at the hands of some electronic device, follow the ESRB, take responsibility. The psycholigical effects large amounts of violence has on children is obviously not good, its meant for when they're older, and know what they're dealing with, so being a parent isnt the worst thing to do.

sonicthehedgehog57 : Video games are just for killing time. It has advantages and disadvantages too. Advantages are those it can be used as fun and it can be used to make our friends be close to us. Disadvantages are those it will make our mind stick up to the games rather than doing other works and causes our marks to go down. Video games are not the main reason for humans to turn beastly but they are a reason too. In detail if we see we can know that we have many problems in our life when these problems get overhead we become over stressed and we don't know how to express them so as we see the violent games we express them in the way how the hero does. so stress is the major factor which affects us. so, we must be cool always to lose this problems.  

ARMOR : I know they're just for killing time, but anyone that kills based off of playing video games obviously isn't right in the head. If you're so mad that you wanna do something then just sit and play the game in which you do stuff when you're mad. Hell when I made I load Shadow the Hedgehog to blow everything to bits I'm not going to go outside and start hitting people with a lead pipe!

sonicthehedgehog57 : You are mostly right but at times when your computer have blown down its effect will be high and the stress would reach to a upper most limit and you will blow everything you are into it will be like a half dead stage. It will be a stage that you will feel nothing for a while. It will make you feel extremely lonely.  

ARMOR : Sure i agree with you it sucks and certainly makes you mad and stressed but is killing ever an option for it? That's an obvious no "well I was pissed off because my game quit working" well then here's what  your answer would end up being by investigators "Well I'm sorry but I'm going to have to arrest you". Like I said before it's all a mental thing and not a game feature, if that was true then people would've tried making an Arm Cannon and be like Mega Man a longtime ago.

I don't believe violent video games make people murder, that is a choice (a horrible one) of the person themselves. Its not like the video game is telling them to murder people its a form of entertainment that is fictional. If a peron chosses to murder then the problem lies within the person themselves, lack of conscience and morals and general sense of what is right and wrong. Maybe even a mental scaring from the past but its never the cause of a video game show or movie, All t may do is give them more enjoyment then most, but that's just my opinion. 

ilikeditto : Even if the game is telling them to murder, it is still their fault, and their choice to do so. I don't take the old "somebody or something told me to do it" as any sort of justification. If you are going to kill you are going to do it with or with out video games, movies, or music and that is just that. I totally agree with you.

GOD. I hate this debate. SO much. 

There have been COUNTLESS research efforts to determine if video games are violent and nearly all of these support the idea that violent video games do not cause violent tendencies. The ones that do only have very weak links between violent tendencies and violent video games. In fact there has actually been research that suggests that violent video games cause people to feel less violent as a result of playing them. It is quite obvious that the correlation between homicides and violent behavior are a false link and a myth perpetuated by the news. 

It's just such a dumb argument. You can almost immediately tell people who don't like violent video games because they've likely never even experienced them. 

But by all means, let's judge something for the rest of the world even when we've got absolutely no experience with what we're talking about.
