I started as an underground builder, but now I'm usually a surface builder. I haven't tried making a house in the sky, like I've seen on youtube and in servers, but I should sometime.

In other words, I'm a surface builder right now.

I have a system. Whenever I start a world, I build underground with limited supplies. When I get more materials (i.e. A lot of wood, cobblestone, some diamonds, etc.) I take everything from my old house and move it to the surface. So, technically I'm a surface builder as that comes later into my worlds.

I prefer to build underground, ideally in ravines. Greifers almost never find them, supplies for constructing them are plentiful, and they're safe from things like mobs or other hazards.

I guess in terms of practicality the best thing to do would be to build underground in some secluded location. BUT. I will admit, I'm obsessed with sky houses.

I'm pretty sure I've developed every possible way to jump down and climb up from a sky house. I remember at one point I had like 7 different pools to jump down to all going in different directions depending on what I needed to do. Yeah. I was addicted.

I tend to build my homes on the surface.  I will usually build a 1-3 story home at the top of a steep mountain, then build some form of bridge or ramp leading down (Usually something that can be easily watched for mobs.)  Then by the time I am done, I will usually have a large portion of the mountain turned into an underground series of rooms and tunnels resembling the kinds of labyrinths you see in Diablo II and similar games.

I voted surface since the primary part of my home is above ground, even though I tend to have 2/3 or more of my overall structure below ground by the time I am finished.

I voted for Sky since I did once make a sky village with my friends on a server with the helpful worldedit mod. 
I guess you could of called it a kind of heaven since it was up in the clouds and was coated in gold and glowstone.

Usually in survival I build tiny homes underground since they are quick and easy to build and are effective against hostiles on the surface. When I play survival I don't concentrate on buildings that look pretty so when I really want to build something that looks nice I do it in the sky!

Sky builder. I usaully make castles or fortress's so they look even better in the sky. I play offline in creative so it's easy for the construct them in the sky.

Generally I like to build everywhere but having a house on the surface is more convenient then going to the sky or going underground to get there. I also have more access to the treasuresI may need. Usually I also have some sort of a link to my house and underground. But I ddon't build as much in the sky because it's harder.

Usually it's surface for me. When I play factions, I usually like to have a base underground with an underground farm and other things with my friends. I've never tried building a house in the sky because I might fall to my death or I might forget something in my old house and I need to go down to get it.

I just have finished making a really big underground house in Minecraft and it's one of the best creations I have made in the game. So that's why I'm voting for the Underground, not really know why, but this is how I build my home.

I like to make them on the surface normally. I do have a tree house in my jungle biome though. In one of my previous maps I built a very large underwater house made totally out of glass. It took quite some time to dig out the area and build the house since I play on survival, but it looked really great. I did use glass blockes since panes are really hard to place on top of each other. I have never actually tried to build a house underground, but probably will try that when the next 360 update comes out.

I have always been a surface builder, too many problems arise in the sky and underground. I like to be able to see where I am and what I am doing. If I am underground, I can never tell if I will run into a cavern, a hole, lava, or if I find some kind of ore and I have to end up smelting stone because there's usually a few extra holes in the walls, roof, or floor. And then of course there's going to be a zombie problem if you are on survival.

Then you have sky, if you are not in creative this will obviously be a pain because you have to be very careful, no room for mistakes, and a lot of deaths.

I like to keep my surface for building, my underground for mining, and mu sky foe suicides.
