I hold the sock in the air and see what shape it appears to take.  If it looks like I've been wearing that sock on the left foot denoted by a slight curve to the right when holding the sock in the air then I put it on the left.  This system doesn't always work cuz u can make a mistake and then the sock has been worn on both feet and it it harder to tell by the shape when holding it which foot it usually goes on.

I don't think socks actually have a left and right sock. I think they are designed in a way that they can fit in either foot. It was never uncomfortable in wearing socks thinking which sock goes to which foot. The only thing I think may matter is the design of the socks themselves. I have a friend who wears left footed and right footed socks, but always puts them on wrong the first time. I think it's just to have the labels on the top of the socks on a specific side of your foot, while the sock itself feels comfortable either way. I normally wear solid color socks so it doesn't matter on what foot I put each sock.
