Oh man oh man, Final Fantasy is an amazing series! I played almost all of them, the ones I haven't played are the newest ones. 

Regarding where to start, go cliche and start with number one. However, with all the expansiveness of the games, it will be a long time before you get to the really popular ones, like 7 and 8. 

As I said, 7 is extremely popular, and in all honesty, you can start from there anyways. You don't always have to go in order. You need the PSX item from the Site Store in order to play 7 though. 

I like Final Fantasy III though, it's a good game. Really intriguing in the beginning as well. Maybe you should start off there, and move on up. Just don't forget about I and II.

Final Fantasy VI is a fun game.
However, I believe it is a PSX game, which I do not think bossrunner may be able to play yet. So it would be wise to start out small first, then move on to the complicated games like VII and VIII. VI would be a great start too though.

FF7 and FF8 are my favorite so I'd recommend that you start out with those but if you like long and challenging RPG games especially ones that require you to use your brain to figure out puzzles and strategies then FF12 is pretty fun game to play.

The first one is a good place to start but it can get kinda boring though, there is a lot of grinding required to get the gold you need to buy the stuff you need and it can get quite tedious.  I would start with FFIV aka FFII, it is the earliest FF game that flows really smoothly, has lots of fun side adventures and the story is really good.  If you really enjoy FFIV then I would go back and play the original for the NES.
