I think the hardest level was the last castle in the original Super Mario Bros. I kept dying because I did not know where to go except running ahead of me. When I lost my lives, I watched a video and noticed how stupid I was. :p

Black Bot : I HATE the castles,especially the last one in New Super Mario bros. DS
where you pretty much get PWNED by Bowser AND Bowser jr. at the end. But to Mario,I guess it's worth it to get kissed by Princess Peach (To him,at least).

I say the hardest is Super Mario Bros 3 I really hate that angry sun level in the desert it is so anoying it chases you in the whole level as well and gets faster as it progresses I beat the level so many times though it isn't even a challenge anymore to be honest.

There are tons of hard levels that I could never beat. Super Mario Bros. 3 sun level, the final special level in Super Mario World, but by far the hardest was 8-4 in Super Mario Bros. 2: Lost Levels. I used the infinite lives glitch to get 126 lives, went to the final level, and got a game over. And I thought the level before it was hard. Almost 200 lives lost on one level....and haven't even gotten to Bowser. Hardest level in any game I've ever played.

Mine would be Level S8-Crown in Super Mario 3D Land. It is a horrible level that was 400 times harder then the rest of the game. Only reason I got through it at all is from stocking up on Rock Leaves.

The toughest level I had to experience with is level 8-3 in the Lost Levels (SMB 2 in Japan)
because when you're small Mario, it is pretty much nearly impossible to beat, even at professional level.

The entire Pipe Maze in Mario 3 acts as the hardest level for me. Suppose it's supposed to be difficult, seeing how late in the game it is. But I can go through Bowser's world without much trouble. Yet the Pipe Maze seems to always drain lives like crazy when I try to play through it.

If hacks count, I would have to say the first level in Kaizo Mario world (never beat the level lol). If hacks don't count, then I would say one of the star special levels in Super Mario world, where you had to constantly get the balloons to get across, I always died before reaching the next one.
