In almost every school in the USA you are faced with a difficult decision - do you want to take French class or Spanish class? I chose French. I like it a lot better. It makes more sense to me and it sounds prettier. Which would / did you choose?

Barathemos : I wasn't talking about every language, just the two that are usually available as choices in school. Why would you summon the mods?

If I had to choose, I would go with French. I agree that it does sound prettier. Unfortunately, my school doesn't teach French. They have Spanish, German, and Chinese instead, and I'm learning Chinese.

To be honest I have the same question myself.

I dunno which one to pick, some say Spanish is better, others say French is better.

My school just started doing French this year, but I'm taking French or Spanish next year. But I bet my school will stop offering French next year because my school is so cheap, and may be forced into taking Spanish.

I would go with French because it makes a bit more sense than Spanish does, but they are both very similar and I think because of that, they just go with both of them, or at least that is how it is for me, they have both Spanish and French in my school. A lot of the wording and verbiage is the same, with the exception of a few pronunciations and different lettering used. But otherwise they are very similar, so if you take one, you are likely to do decent in the other. But I would go with French, I just like it more and understand it easier than Spanish.

Ir's weird that there are only two actual votes in this thread.  LOL

I chose Spanish. I figured that with such a large population of Spanish speakers in America, it was simply the more practical language.  However, I'm never going to know a language well enough to speak it fluently, I fear. I marvel at everyone who can speak more than one language and I wish I could.

I can read Spanish with relative ease, speak small bits of sentences slowly, and NEVER understand a native speaker.  If I was in a Spanish country, I'd be screwed.

I mean, unless the people there were kind enough to write everything down.  Maybe if I ever go, I should pretend to be a deaf chick?

I would rather speak French. It sounds nicer, and just all around seems a better choice, plus everyone I know who speaks French says it's pretty easy.

I think if you live in the United States the language that you chose should be based on where you live. If you live closer to the northern border of the country it would seem like a good idea to learn French. If you live closer to the southern border maybe a person would benefit from learning Spanish. I live in Kansas and personally I wish I would have paid more attention in Spanish class because there are Spanish speaking people everywhere.

I chose Spanish for practicality. French is a more eloquent tongue, however.

This thread has a good topic for polls and question so I won't close it. If I'm gonna close every x or y thread in here I'd probably kill the whole forum.

edit- Neither are offered in our schools here, the usual ones are english, filipino (those two are mandatory language subjects that should be taken by everyone) nihongo (Japanese) and mandarin (Chinese).

Spanish is much more helpful.  The United States has a massive influx of Spanish speaking citizens and people come over all the time from south and other countries.  I hear Spanish on a regular daily routine and I speak enough to do my job with some basic vocabulary.  Spanish radio stations exist here and we have a Mexican town in Detroit.  Spanish is much more helpful than French because it is used regularly and the population of Spanish speakers will continue to grow.

I can't think of anywhere that speaks French outside of France, Quebec, and some French Polynesian islands.  If you go to Central or South America, you get Spanish.  Spanish even mixes in with the Filipino languages in the Philippines.  It's a helpful language and musical and fun to speak.  French just makes you sound like a surrender monkey.

I'm home schooled, so I've never faced a choice like this in school before. However, I did study a little French at one time. I prefer it over Spanish, because, like the creator of the thread said, it sounds prettier to me. I've found Spanish to be easier to understand, but I still prefer French.

Spanish and not because it's my native language. French is hard to learn, even my professor told that they launch frequently dictionaries because many words change, or they dissappear

Whether I have Spanish in my school or not, and I don't, I have French. I'll choose French not for that reason, but it seems to be more of a natural language. I just like it's culture as well, along with an easy learning system.
