In my opinion, telling a lie is just diverting someone's attention from what really happened. You are trying to make sure no one finds out what you did. Keeping a secret is not revealing at all. 

Lies fabricate, secrets hide. But in the end, both circumstances with-hold truth or actions, or anything that has been done, from any other person.  

I honestly don't have much to say concerning this as of now, because I can't put into words what I am trying to put across.

A lie is purposely telling a false statement in order to trick or deceive someone into believing what your saying is true, a secret is a truthful or false statement that someone is keeping concealed or to themselves not telling anyone else what was said directly to them.

To be honest that is what I feel is the difference between a lie and a secret, they are not the same.

I agree with you completely, they both hold the truth from someone and keep them from knowing what happened, but they are both concealing it. A lie just sort of deters them away from the truth and what actually happened, but keeping a secret is just not talking about it at all and hiding it from them altogether. They both withhold the truth which is bad, but a lie is worse because you lose your trust with someone else while just keeping it a secret hides it from them without actually giving them false information. 

This is a very interesting topic and I am sure a lot of other users will have a lot to say about this and build upon the topic, but for the most part I think you summed it up nicely. They both hide the truth but a lie diverts them from the truth and finding out what actually happened. So I think there is a lot to be said and added to this topic. 

Both are dishonest, but I agree with you completely.  My parents always taught me that withholding something was just as bad as lying, and I've grown up to share that belief with them.

Well you see the thing is . In telling a lie  you do not tell the truth . Where in keeping a secret is doing something concealed from others . When to TELL a lie it means that you Talk to a person . When you keep a secret it means you HIDE something from someone .  Lying is a verbal encounter ans keeping a secret can be both verbal and non verbal . Hidng a Teddy bear that you stole is keeping a secret .  Lying about the Teddy Bear that you stole is both a lie and keeping a secret . How ever .  Hiding the Teddy Bear was not a lie . Does this answer your question ?

Neither has to be bad.
There is such a thing as a white lie. If theres something that could cause the person unnecessary problems or sadness then why would I subject them to that. Yes, sometimes people need the truth or a reality check, but sometimes you have to realise that intent is what makes an action good or bad.
And a secret is generally something you have been entrusted with or that you shouldnt know about, it is a mattwer of respect not to pass it on. If its your own secret then its your buissiness, you have no commitment to open up to people about things you dont want to.

Typically a lie is a deliberate subversion of facts, a secret is a more selfless witholding of facts, whether you speak of it or not.

Hes got emtotional problems and has gone to see a shrink,he asked me not to tell anyone. he is also exceptionally self conscious and overly succesptable to others opinions of him as a indicator of his self worth.

The 2 are just different tools to achieve the same thing.

And id choose option 2 for both of those, does trying to do right by the people who trust in me make me a bad person? I choose to believe no.

There are times when keeping a secret and telling a lie become the same thing. Almost everyone who has posted here has said that lying is saying something untrue to deceive or divert from the truth, and keeping a secret is just the act of not revealing the truth (or lie if the secret isn't the truth). 

But think about this. You are set on keeping a secret, and part of keeping that secret is not revealing that you even know about it. Someone asks you about it. They ask if you know about it or something like that. In order to keep the secret, you would have to play like you have absolutely no idea. That is telling something untrue. That is deceiving. That is diverting someone from the truth that you know this secret. So in this case, in order to keep the secret, you have to tell a lie. Therefore, to keep the secret is to tell a lie. 

In this case, they are one and the same. The only time keeping a secret is not the same as telling a lie is if nobody ever asks you about it and you never have to pretend that you don't know this secret. The moment someone asks you about it and you are not supposed to even reveal that you know it, keeping a secret becomes telling a lie.

I wouldn't automatically consider them the same thing nor would I automatically consider them both bad. Not everybody has a right to know everything. Of course there are situations where both keeping secrets and lying could be considered malicious. Anyway as people above me have said lying is actively misleading someone while keeping a secret is just withholding information that the person may or may not even want to know.

Between keeping a secret and telling a lie is both bad and shouldn't be done, but people more lie than keeping a secret.

To me, a lie is pretty much where you tell someone a false outcome and sometime it works, but most of the time, it backfires. As for keeping a secret is where someone is trying to change the subject and don't want to tell about their false outcome.
