So I may be a little on the newer side on this website but there is something I have noticed quite often. That is that a lot of reviews on games are lacking in specifics, organization, and some are just a couple sentences about opinions but not actual reviews. I have actually had to write some reviews which I was not really able to write much about just because of a game not having a decent review that broke everything down which is a shame because many gamers read reviews before they play a game and some great games on here are lacking in decent reviews. So one of my missions is to slowly change the reviews on each game to actually be filled with information, each category being broken down and explained, and more than 500 words each which on the more popular games reviews tend to really hit that mark.

So how I would like to change this is give out a simple template where by literally copy/paste this template all you would have to do is elaborate on each topic during the break down. This will make it not only easier and less time consuming but will also make each review much better which increases the chances of gamers playing these wonderful games. So to start I will put up a template I usually tend to use for all of my reviews and hopefully enough review writers will add on to this more basic template so that we can really start having great reviews on every game! So here is my break down/template I always use:

Summary:
In the summary you basically do an overall type of review where you put in a few sentences how you liked the graphics, sound, how you want to replay the game again or why you do not want to replay the game again, and of course your opinion about how the game overall stacks up against other games you played on the console.
By doing this you are setting up the gamer for not only the review but if you make a long review and they are not open to reading paragraphs upon paragraphs at least with the summary they are able to get a nice grasp of what the game is about, if it is good or not, and if another gamer (you in this case) would play it again. Which those are usually what gamers tend to look for before attempting to play a new game.

Graphics and Sound:
In this paragraph you either do a #'s list breaking them down or you just explain it in a paragraph. Some ideas to really make this section very well written is by answering some basic questions such as:
1) If this game is a part of a series how is it different from the rest?
2) Compared to other games on the same console how is it better or worse?
3) Do you recommend listening to the game's soundtrack? If yes why and if not why?
4) Overall rating for these two categories and a quick recap of answered questions. (Still suggest you expand your thoughts as well as answering different questions)

Addictiveness:
This category is about how much fun you had, how challenging it was, why you would or would not play the game again, and some of the issues you had with the game as well as how hard it was to get through. If done right you should be able to explain all of these answers in 2-3 sentences and able to give specific examples.

Story and Depth:
In these categories which I usually merge together you should explain the overall story without giving much away. Also you should say how large the maps of the games are, what you thought about the different maps or areas, or stages, and also you should talk a little bit about how long you would estimate it would take to beat the game. To make it even better you can quote a different website and give the estimate game play number they release on the game's page.

Difficulty:
In this category you explain how easy or hard the game was, how the level of difficulty either increases or decreases throughout the game, what frustrated you while playing the game and giving specific examples, and of course you will want to explain how you found a way to cut off training time, suggestions to make the game easier, and maybe a minor tip section.

Ending:
Quick recap and thank the gamers for reading your guide.

I believe this appears to be similar to Play4fun's Review Central and if I remember correctly there is a thread in that forum that shows the review guidelines.
Anyways the reviews recently haven't been that bad in fact I had seen far worse reviews even plagiarized reviews before so I don't think bad reviews are much of a problem anymore.

austipokedude : I wish that absol background you have was for sale but yeah your right I just wanted to really remind everyone what exactly a review is and give some examples on how to break everything down because I have seen some very horrific reviews on here to the point where I feel it is a pretty big problem which could easily be fixed if everyone worked at it a little more. But I do think the admins should take out some of the reviews that are not even reviews on different games just because so many are misleading and does not really help those who want to give games a chance. I find myself reading 20 reviews sometimes just because 19/20 are not reviews but just random opinions with general everything like "This game was so much fun to play".

Yeah play4fun already wrote something like this found here: https://www.vizzed.com/boards/thread.php?id=58382.

I completely agree with you though. I hate reviews less than 200 words and I usually make sure my reviews are over 500 words. I try to get them in the 700-800 word range.

tgags has already mentioned my thread at the Game Review forum, but you should definitely look through that thread. Most of the stuff that you say is quite reasonable, but if you check out my thread, I said that a great review doesn't have to list out category after category, nor does a review with more words mean better review.

The big thing for members? Be strict when commenting or rating reviews. Some people are not providing great reviews because people commented thinking that they are great reviews when they are not. This gives false approval and they will continue what they are doing. So people need to rate the reviews in the game page. Rate them a lower score for the review if the review is very low quality. That is what I usually do. I can be pretty strict when rating and commenting reviews, though I haven't had the time to do any of that recently.Even ones that are not reviews and just baseless opinions, I literally tell them "this is not a review. Edit it or it's trashed"

Something that we've been discussing is wonder if there is a way for people to read that thread or the rules thread for reviews BEFORE they start to make a review.

Yeah I think they should just make every review needing to be approved and do a clean sweep for those in reviews that really are not reviews and make a special comment thread for all of them so people could earn Viz without spamming everyone who is trying to figure out if they want to try out a game or not.

play4fun : I used to tell people that they need to work on their reviews more because they weren't the best, but SuperCrash told me I was being mean. Now I just send them a link to your thread. Before writing their first review, people should have to take a review quiz. Kind of like the Newbie Quiz, but it is about the rules and guidelines or review writing.

tgags123 : Well, I mean you don't want to be unreasonably mean about it. You don't want to be like "Hey, that's not a review!! Your post sucks!!! You fail in reading rules!! Go and look them through, you noob!!!." You can be reasonably firm and strict without being mean.

tgags123 :
play4fun :

This is why whenever I comment on a review I always start with a compliment or two. Then, I critique and follow up with words of encouragement. Most times the author doesn't even reply so there is no way to know if the advice was taken well.

Yeah, some people just say "You're being mean!!" even when it's just creative criticism. Some people are as stubborn as to just ignore the advice people give them because "they don't need help because they're obviously better than others." It's better to start off nice, like phantom, and then give them the advice. Some people actually took my advice before and became pretty good reviewers.

tgags123 : First off I was saying you were being a little harsh not mean:

I've been reading through some of your post in the review fourm.

You've been saying things like" This can't be a review is it. or this is not a review" most reviews I've read are over 500 words"

I thought that was a little harsh,  why?

Via 1) Because first off they were newbies.
via 2) they were new, and were just getting started on reviewing.

I honestly think that half of the time. Some of My Review Replies are actually fake. I mean Come on: Answer me this? How can one simply be reading through a 1000+ worded review in under 30 seconds? I've been seeing this a lot, and it annoys me. Because It's simply impossible to do.

And Then they decide to give out criticism:

Now Most of the time I don't mind criticism on reviews. As long as it's not too harsh.

But it does Bother me Especially if one is just posting there, and giving the same amount of advice. when it was already said.

Sometimes I feel as if I'm getting to the point. were I need to tell those who repeat advice.   Guys it's already been said once. There's no need to constantly repeat advice to reviews.

Now as for this guide:

Most experienced Reviewers Know this straight and up.
But This is most needed when newbies try to write up a review.

Honestly I like your guide and Everything. I believe it's very helpful to formatting reviews.

But at last I have to say: I don't think it will help all that much.  Why?

Simply because Most Newbies Don't Even Read Play4fun's guide on reviewing, before posting a review of their own.

So it's most unlikely that they will take their time to read this.

goodboy :
I know. Users have a habit of Getting ticked off easily. Even if it's something simple like criticism.

Enough said.
You have my take on this. Buabye.
