So, the title kinda sums up my question. Do you think Skillet is a Christian group?

I used to think so, but some of the lyrics in their songs have made me doubt. So, what do you think? I appreciate any and all opinions!

BTW, not debating with each other in this thread. Everyone's got an opinion, just share yours. Thanks! XD

Christian or not they are still people and they are also professionals.
If you dig the music?
Then buy more of the C.D.'s or M.P.3's.
If you do not?
Then do not buy anymore.
I hardly think labels like religious or soul or rock matters with taste.
If you are letting the label dictate your selection?
Then you might need to take some time off to sort you life out and figure out what you are about.
Not what a band is all about.
Music has been dubbed "The universal Language."
I kinda like that more as a label than the traditional stuff. (like country, Rap, Rock, etc, etc, etc.)
I have my own labels.
I have sections called "stuff to wake up to", "stuff to fall asleep to", stuff to work with", and "stuff to groove to", "Stuff to Drive to", and the famous "Mood Lighting Stuff".
It all happens to be music I dig.
They have traditional labels but I favour my own and do not really care what others think If they hear it or see it in my C.D. Wallet.
You live in a Monastary or something???
Why fret about music???
If you dig it?
Then dig it. Nothing to it.
Good Luck.

Good Luck To All.
I'm done. Stick a fork in me.
Peace.

orionfoxgibson : Really? Why can't I ask for people's opinion on the religious stance of a music group? I see no harm in asking that! I mean, this thread wasn't even about me attempting to decide if I should or shouldn't buy their music! I was just asking for people's opinions, not hoping for someone to ask if I live in a monastary. lol.

Now, to get back on topic... There are some lyrics I have a problem with, which include "I'll do what I want, cuz this is my life" (From the Skillet song "Awake and Alive"). The reason I have a problem with it is because as Christians, we are to devote our lives to God. That means our lives are His, not our own. That is what originally made me doubt. I'd love to hear other peoples interpretations of that line, but this poll is about the question "Is skillet a Christian group". Therefore, please answer that question before responding (in this thread) to my more unrelated question.

So, I'm currently undecided.

Edit: Thanks, thenumberone, for answering the question...

mrfe :

To answer your question: Yes.

If this is your biggest problem in life then consider yourself lucky. And if  they are not Christian enough for you then go listen to something else.

if you take that line with the idea of god you could see it as him saying he will devote himself to god if he wants, despite what others think, because its his life.

if you read the lyrics
http://www.elyrics.net/read/s/skillet-lyrics/awake-and-alive-lyrics.html
its abundantly clear that its about god.
to be honest though, people enjoy music because it makes them feel certain things, to that extent 2 people can listen to a song and have vastly different views on what the songs saying.
really what a song means to you is more important than what the creator meant.

A lot of times, bands identify themselves as "bands who are made up of Christians" as opposed to "Christian bands." I personally am put off by a lot of Christian music because to me, it's not appealing, but there are a lot of bands whose members are notably Christian (say, Red or Skillet) that don't always have overt Christian messages that I really connect with.

I think it's important to note that we're human and we have feelings. Sometimes songs come from a place of where we are when we're singing the song. David himself spoke out of his own feelings in the Psalms, like in 22, when he asks God why he had supposedly forsaken him. We know that God never did forsake him, but he at some point felt as though it was. We don't discredit him, do we?

And as thenumberone states, the context of the song itself is important. When he says, "I'll do what I want, cuz this is my life," he's really telling the world that their criticism and attempts to drag him down don't matter. Other songs, like "Monster," come from another place that might not necessarily be a "Christian" point of view, but at no point in our Christian walk should we expect not to have a conflict with ourselves and who we've been versus who we are. Sometimes that struggle gives us testimony.

Now, it's not a worship style band like Hillsong, so if you're in a worship setting, I almost guarantee that those songs will not be apart of it. But they still shouldn't be discounted as Christian because they're singing from a place that isn't necessarily from where we would expect a Christian to come from. Anyways, buddy, good question! I hope I helped!

mrfe :  Caught this thread a bit "late".  It's good to ask questions, especially when it comes to music, because it is so powerful and influential even if you don't realise it or don't want to realise it.  Not too long ago I had the same question about RED, Thousand Foot Krutch and couple of other bands.  For me it's like this - If you have a genuine relationship with Jesus Christ, your whole life, speech, thought will testify of Him.  He should get the glory for everything and in everything.  As a Christian, you cannot judge someone's salvation.  You don't know that person's heart.  You don't know if he / she has given their life to Christ.  Only God knows.  However, we can judge someone by their "fruit".  These fruit of the Spirit are (as you would know) love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control (Galatians 5:22-23).  Just as an example, looking at RED's youtube video Release the Panic, it seems angry, violent, a bit chaotic.  So the above mentioned "fruit" is not evident in this particular example.  I have never been to a concert of theirs so I don't know what their "Christian" message is, since they are labeled as Christians.  I've not heard them proclaim Jesus in any of their lyrics / music and this makes me doubt.  The same goes for Skillet.  The music sounds cool and personally, I like that type of music, but just because of the above, it makes me also doubt.  I mean if Christ is your life, you would want to proclaim it and share the good message through your songs / life.  Although the lyrics might seem positive or  "with a positive message" in it, they don't take the definite stand that "Jesus is LORD".  Once again, I'm only judging from what I can see and listen to in their videos and read in their lyrics.  Maybe they've got an awesome gospel message and prayer before they start their show, I don't know.  If that's the case, then Praise the Lord! I used to be a huge fan of Skillet, RED and TFK, but some of the things to me personally just seemed out of sync with the Christian life.  There's a fine line.  When in doubt, leave it.  I'm a huge Kutless fan and unfortunately I was kinda swayed by someone's opinion about them for a while.  Just because they dress a certain way and wear mascara and black nail polish does not make them the devils children.  Investigate for yourself if you feel uneasy about a band.  Check out their lyrics and measure it up to God's Word.  Do they point to Jesus?  This is why I still listen to Kutless and don't judge on someone's opinion.
