I'm currently doing a lot of reading on the Lord's Supper from the view point of John Calvin in his Institutes. If you don't mind, describe how your church celebrates the Lord's Supper and what it means to you when you take it.

I've noticed a lot of denominations do that. My church does it on a weekly basis. What do you think happens in the Lord's Supper? Do you encounter Jesus in a special way? I guess I'm trying to figure out what value people from various traditions place on it.

It is not a "celebration" and there is nothing like transubstantiation. Wine is wine and bread is bread, though Christ is present in them. Christ died for our sins only once.

Many Protestant denominations, including the Anglican, many Presbyterian, Lutheran, many Methodists, etc., believe in the "real presence" of Christ in the Eucharist and disavow the doctrine of transubstantiation. I use the term "celebration" because, whatever the Lord's Supper is, it is an act of worship, which is certainly cause for celebration. Cheers.

Our church has a time of prayer, and leaves the bread and "wine" (grape juice) in front of the church. You pray first, and as you feel led (or finish praying) you come up and take communion. First sunday of every month.

What does it mean to me? Well, it's very meaningful to me. To me, it symbolizes Christs death for our sins. If you think about it (and have read that part of the Bible), taking communion is eating Christ's body and drinking His blood. I take this very seriously... I mean, who wouldn't take 'eating Christ's body' and 'drinking His blood' seriously! Every time, I'm filled with awe that our perfect and holy God would die for me, a rotten sinner! I mean, I doubt I would'a done it...
