That's a tough one...

Try taking their movesets from Brawl to determine who will win. If that's the case, then I would say... Link, mainly because I think he's bad ass. But in all seriousness, Link's shield would protect him from most of Mario's attacks, then Link could finish Mario with his Triforce Slash.

Link is a much better character because he has a great story line, being his ancestors and descendants of himself through times. He has an awesome upbringing, and is normally the silent underdog, until he rises up and proves himself to the others (I.E Mido). He has background and a story that matches none other.

Mario on the other hand is a previous schoolyard bully, now a plumber who becomes good and saves a Princess from an evil turtle.
