I have recently read an article about some Italian scientist was able to speed up some particle to actually go faster than the speed of light.
These particles are called neutrinos, they are produced from radioactivity, almost kind of like a waste product I guess. These are neutrinos are so small that there are 65 billion of them in every square centimeter from here to the sun. So they are pretty small.
If these Italian scientists can succeed in making actually atoms travel faster than the speed of light, it would completely disprove Einstein's theory of relativity and every thing would basically have to be rethought.

Now if there are able to make atom go faster than the speed of light, I believe that it will take many years to actually do it, and then many more to make normally sized object travl that fast as well.

Here is the article for you to read more on it: http://www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=particles-found-to-travel

I never new particles can travel faster than the speed of light, 60 nanoseconds faster than the speed of light.

in theory if the particle has no mass then it should be able to go faster than the speed of light. I'm not surprised by this at all.

Still cool to hear that someone was able to make it happen.

This is a great milestone, but with how technology is improving these days, it doesn't surprise me as much as other people.

I have heard about this and I have to say that it is pretty cool. I did not think that it could happen but it has which is strange to think about. Now if only we could ride them, then we would be able to go light speed!

I heard the news before as well. The way it works, it doesn't disprove of Einstein's theory, otherwise decades of scientific work would be thrown down the drain.

This is completely mindblowing to me. If it travels faster than the speed of light, then that means that it'd be there before it's actually there... which makes no sense. I can't wait to see scientists start testing with this stuff and open up a black hole or something .

...Just because it is moving faster than light doesn't mean time is altered in any way, it gets there when it gets there even if it beats a ray of light in a race lol. and btw they are already making black holes, have been for years nothing special about an implosion.

I wouldn't say this disproves the theory of relativity as much as it gives use more information into that area. I am pretty sure scientists during Einsteins era believed nothing moved faster than light.

Discussing this with friends , a few of them have said this means time travel is possible, which in my opinion, isn't the case. Time being relative simply means time is faster or slower depending on how fast you are traveling (which I still find hard to believe). Even if we could travel faster than light, it doesn't mean we can turn back time.

Why in the world does the universe have a speed limit? Didn't the Matrix teach you people anything? If the universe is anything like me a limit is close to a rule and there is only one thing to do with rules.

fightorace : Every thing has a limit. Even if that limit is just a vast space of nothing, it still ends.
We thought that the Speed of light was the limit, but now neutrinos can move faster, and for now, that is the limit.

pi0x :
everything has a limit?  we have a word for not having a limit called infinity.  It is not just some made up thing.  what about time? what about the number of decimals between 1 and 2 lots of things are limitless,  You can't just say there is a limit we just can't find it so we will call the best we got for now the limit.

fightorace : I meant the limit of our understanding or knowledge of something. Yeah there can be an infinite number of decimals between 1 and 2, but there is a limit to what we can count. Kind of the same with speed, there is a limit to how fast the neutrinos can go, to our knowledge only.
We know they can go 60 nanoseconds faster than the speed of light, but we don't know if they can go faster, yet.

Anyways there is a reason it is called the "Theory of Relativity".  Theory meaning evidence points towards support of the theory but there is not enough data to come to a conclusion, hence we are talking over things even the scientific community hasn't proven (or disproven as it may turn out) to themselves, much less us our layman brains.  That said, I don't want to put limits on things like speed or time for the same reasons everyone else does.  Well what reasons does one have for limiting speed and how the he** could you have the same reason for not limiting it.  Answer:  To further understand the world around us.

fightorace : Your idea of why we call things theories is true, strictly speaking, but I think it nonetheless requires clarification.

Scientific Theory is about as high as it gets. We use "theory" because science, as a school of thought, is to doubt. Especially when it comes to subjects which cannot directly be observed, Science classifies things as "theory" even when just about every human regards it as "fact." For example, gravity, germs, evolution, and all sorts of other things many of us we think we know for sure are still regarded as theories simply because one cannot logically know for sure, so science leaves a bit of wiggle room. There is plenty of supporting data, and up until now, to doubt relativity would have been akin to doubting the theory of gravitation.

fightorace : I'm not trying to say that what we know is the limit. There probably is something that can go faster than 60 nanoseconds faster than the speed of light, but we haven't found it yet, so as of now the limit of speed to our minds is 60 nano seconds faster than the speed of light. If that makes any sense at all.

Mind=Blown

Actually I think this is pretty cool. Scientifically it makes sense, but it's a good thing we've got people sitting around shooting off neutrinos.

Matter can easily go faster than the speed of light, providing it is propelled with enough force. If we are to believe the Big Bang theory it says that the universe was a point of infinite mass and density until it blew up, shall we say, now there is also a theory that there is matter beyond where light hasn't reached yet in the far outreaches of the universe. Now how can this happen if light went out in all directions from the center of the universe? The force of the Big Bang was so powerful that it propelled matter faster than the speed of light. Under normal circumstances nothing can go faster  than the speed of light but the Big Bang and particle accelerators are not normal circumstances. Oh and random piece of trivia did you know that if you are in a train that is going 99.9 percent the speed of light time will slow down inside that train, train of course being a metaphor for an atom. This is because if you ran forward the speed of the train combined with your speed would go faster than the speed of light. This cannot happen, or usually cannot happen, so time gets distorted so that nothing can exceed  299,792,458 meters per second. Thus if you did go on this train for a week it would be like 100 years or so. You would have only aged a week but Earth would have aged 100 years. So time travel is possible but only forward in time.
