Way too many times have I seen people throw their hands up into the sky in church, usually while singing a song or listening to a sermon... What's this supposed to accomplish? Does it make them feel closer to God? Are they better than the rest because they feel His power more than those who keep their hands down? What's it all about?

Should these people the looked down upon? Or looked up to? Compared to the rest, that is.

It's not out of the ordinary. It is just a way of expressing emotion when we praise God. I do that myself during worship when I hear a song that is just so moving and so powerful, that I want to raise my hand and lift God's name up, and praise Him.

Let me give you an example of one of the hymns that usually makes me want to just raise my voice and sing or raise my hands up. The hymn is called "In Christ Alone"

Now think about what Christians believe and what this song is saying! Especially this verse:
"There in the ground his body lay,
light of the world, by darkness slain;
then, bursting forth in glorious day,
up from the grave he rose again!
And as he stands in victory,
sin’s curse has lost its grip on me;
for I am his and he is mine,
bought with the precious blood of Christ."

Think about it. HE DIED!!! IMAGINE SOMEONE DYING IN YOUR PLACE WHEN YOU SUPPOSE TO BE THE ONE DYING!!! (yellow part) AND THEN HE CAME BACK FROM THE GRAVE, DEFEATED DEATH (red part) THIS IS NOT SOME NORMAL SACRIFICE, BECAUSE OF THIS SACRIFICE, MY SIN IS CLEANSED. I'M NOT CURSED OR HELD BY SIN!!! (blue part) AND THE BEST PART, I'M ADOPTED BACK TO GOD. SIN SEPARATED ME FROM GOD, AND CHRIST USED HIS BLOOD TO UNITE US BACK!!! I AM BOUGHT BACK (green part). (sorry with the caps, I get excited writing this as well)

I challenge you to read those lyrics again and think about what the message of Christianity is. That is the reason why the main message is called the "gospel," or "Good News" because it is great news. It shows what a loving God that we have!!!!! That He would bother coming to our puny level to die and save us from our own problems, our sin!! And these lyrics are not written only when your life is stable or peaceful or without problems. read the last sentence in the song: "till he returns or calls me home,
here in the pow’r of Christ I’ll stand!" (meaning, either He comes back soon, or if I die early before He comes back, I still stand here as a child of God, I'll still praise him)

If you think about it, there are other contexts that show expressions of emotion that could be seen as "weird" by certain people by looking at the action itself: bobbing heads in a rock concert, celebration in scoring in a sporting event, breakdown and grieve during a sad moment, all of these actions are done because of expression of emotion. Raising hands during worship and sermon is no different, only the context is to worship God and give praises to Him.

Ya play 4fun has a great insight on this. I throw my hands up alot usually though when I feel moved by god or there in a great song on.

"What's this supposed to accomplish? Does it make them feel closer to God? Are they better than the rest because they feel His power more than those who keep their hands down?"

To me it dosen't accomplish anything its just something like I said when I feel moved by god or theres a great song on.

Well me, It does make me feel closer to god cause it feels like I am praiseing him or thats my intentions when I do that.

And no, They are not better than those who keep there hands down just because they might feel god more than that person.
We are all the same in this world. No one is better than the other.

Hope this helped.

There have been a few times where I raised my hands up in the air. I really just did that as I felt that was how God was leading me. I never did, and never will, that has a way of me thinking I was closer to God than others. This goes right along with how the congregation at the church I attend view worship. We allow everyone to do so in ways they believe is right, whether they choose to sing, shout, dance, wave flags, clap their hands, or simply sit quietly in their seats. I guess I am just giving an extension of what play4fun said about expressions of emotions, but I hope this helps.

I'm not a big fan of the dancing around and what not. I find it distracting and self-agrandizing more than anything.

I don't care if someone "feels the spirit" to the point where they feel the need to roll around on the ground or shake in their chair.

Those sorts of things aren't what I experience personally. Maybe it's different for other people but I think stuff like this detracts from my experience more than it adds.

I was taught that they are no better or worse than everyone else. That being said a lot of people in my church do not tolerate that kind of behavior. I am fine with it as long as it is sincere and not mocking others.

It's just another way to actively involve yourself in that style of worship.  I don't do it, but that's because I worship God in a different way altogether.  As long as it's sincerely helping them communicate with God, I think it's fine.
